The Pros and Cons of Cruising vs. Flying Around Europe

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 24, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When planning a trip to Europe, one of the biggest decisions you’ll face is how to get from place to place. With so many beautiful destinations to visit, you may wonder whether to cruise or fly around Europe. Both options have pros and cons, and in this blog, we’ll weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each to help you make an informed decision.

Cruising Around Europe

Cruising around Europe has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. With a cruise, you can visit multiple destinations without worrying about packing and unpacking your bags or dealing with transportation between cities. Here are some benefits of cruising around Europe:

Pros

1. Convenience: As mentioned earlier, you only need to unpack once and enjoy the convenience of taking care of your accommodation and transportation.
2. Scenic views: Cruises often offer breathtaking views of Europe’s coastline, rivers, and canals, which can be a unique and memorable experience.
3. Flexibility: Many cruises offer shore excursions at each port of call, allowing you to customize your itinerary and choose activities that suit your interests.
4. Social atmosphere: Cruises are a great way to meet new people and make friends with fellow travelers.

Cons

1. Limited flexibility: While you can choose from various shore excursions, you’re still limited to the ports of call listed on your itinerary.
2. Crowds: Popular cruises can be crowded, which may detract from your overall experience.
3. Expensive: Cruises can be pricey, especially if you book a luxury liner or opt for expensive excursions.
4. Time-consuming: With multiple days at sea, you may feel like you’re not getting the most out of your time at each destination.

Flying Around Europe

Flying is another option for getting around Europe, and it offers several advantages:

Pros

1. Flexibility: With flights, you can create your itinerary and travel at your own pace.
2. Cost-effective: Depending on the route and time of year, flying can be more affordable than cruising.
3. Time-saving: Flying allows you to cover long distances quickly, giving you more time to explore each destination.
4. Multiple routes: With numerous airports throughout Europe, there are many routes to choose from.

Cons

1. Hassle factor: Flying involves check-in procedures, security checks, and potential delays or cancellations.
2. Baggage restrictions: You’ll need to adhere to airline baggage restrictions and pay extra for checked bags if needed.
3. Tiring travel days: Long flights can be exhausting, especially if you’re not used to flying.
4. Less scenic views: Unless you book a business class ticket or window seat with a clear view, flying can be a less scenic experience.

Whatever option you choose, plan carefully and research thoroughly to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable trip around Europe!

Is Cruising In The Off-Season Worth It?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 19, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Summer isn’t the only time to embark on a cruise. Cruising during the off-season, also known as the shoulder or low season, has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are five pros and cons of cruising during the shoulder season.

Photo by Reynier Carl on Unsplash

What are the advantages of off-season cruising?

Cruising during the off-season offers several advantages. Firstly, lower prices are a major benefit, as off-season cruises often come with significantly reduced rates compared to peak season, making them more affordable for budget-conscious travelers. Additionally, the off-season brings fewer crowds, allowing passengers to enjoy the ship’s amenities without feeling cramped. With fewer people on board, there are shorter lines for activities, restaurants, and attractions, providing a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

The reduced number of passengers during the off-season enables the cruise crew to provide more personalized attention and service. This personalized service enhances the overall experience, as the crew can cater to individual needs and preferences. Furthermore, off-season cruises offer unique itineraries that may not be available during peak times. Some cruise lines provide unique routes to less-traveled destinations or offer one-of-a-kind experiences, allowing passengers to explore new and exciting places.

Lastly, booking a cruise during the off-season increases the chances of securing the desired cabin category or specific cabin location. With higher availability during the off-season, passengers have more options to choose from and can book the accommodations that best suit their preferences. Cruising during the off-season offers lower prices, less crowded environments, personalized service, unique itineraries, and better availability, making it an appealing choice for those seeking a more affordable and enjoyable cruise experience.

Photo by Fernando Jorge on Unsplash

What are the disadvantages of off-season cruising?

Unfortunately, cruising during the off-season also has its drawbacks. There is a higher risk of encountering unpredictable weather, such as storms or rough seas, which can disrupt the itinerary, lead to cancellations, or make the experience less enjoyable for those prone to seasickness. Additionally, some cruise lines may reduce or alter their onboard activities and entertainment options during the off-season due to the lower passenger count, resulting in a less exciting atmosphere and fewer choices for entertainment.

Additionally, cruising during the off-season means fewer passengers will be on board. While this is an advantage for some, if you enjoy meeting and interacting with a diverse group of fellow travelers, the off-season might not offer as many opportunities for socializing. Moreover, depending on the destination, certain ports of call may have limited attractions or services available during the off-season, reducing the chances of engaging in exciting shore excursions or experiencing vibrant activities ashore.

Lastly, it’s important to note that cruise lines often schedule maintenance and renovations during the off-season when passenger demand is lower. While efforts are made to minimize disruptions, you may encounter certain areas of the ship being closed off or undergoing maintenance, which could temporarily limit your access to certain amenities or facilities. Despite the drawbacks, many still find the lower prices, reduced crowds, personalized service, unique itineraries, and better availability during the off-season to outweigh any potential inconveniences.

Who should go on an off-season cruise?

Photo by Natalya Zaritskaya on Unsplash

Off-season cruises are a great choice for anyone with schedules that are more flexible, including retired individuals, families with young children, and even employees who work remotely (don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss).

If off-season cruises seem like the perfect fit for you, consult with your cruise line to see what amenities and itineraries are available, and don’t be afraid to research several cruise lines to get the best deal! Happy cruising!

Oceania Cruises Elevates Fine Dining at Sea

by Julie Bouchner June 19, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Oceania Cruises is introducing new dining options on its eight small luxury ships! Get ready to explore new sushi and Indian cuisine at the Terrace Café and a revamped poolside lunch menu at Waves Grill.

“Food is the foundation of what we do on board each of our ships, and globally, in the destinations we visit,” said Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. “We are renowned for serving The Finest Cuisine at Sea, as it is at the very core of our business. This does not always mean a white linen tablecloth and starched napkins at one of our award-winning specialty restaurants – finest does not always mean the fanciest. It’s also a perfectly prepared pizza or an enticing burrata dish enjoyed al fresco with a crisp glass of white wine as you set sail.”

MORE ABOUT THE DINING

  • Terrace Café, Oceania Cruises’ relaxed dining venue, now offers a daily sushi station and an Indian Corner, expanding its international cuisine options.
  • The sushi station features 45 new recipes created by the line’s Executive Culinary Directors and their team.
  • The Indian Corner at dinner service offers 15 authentic Indian recipes.
  • Waves Grill, Oceania Cruises’ poolside lunch venue, offers a revamped menu with over 20 options, including new cold and hot sandwiches, burgers, and signature dishes.

“At each of our relaxed yet refined venues, our guests can still savor the ritual and theater of a dining experience. You can linger, relax, and enjoy. Guests are not rushed through, these are absolutely not ‘fast’ food options; it’s simply a different ambiance and setting,” explained Chef Alex.

The line has also announced plans to expand its wine-pairing luncheon options and refresh its menus across all ships before the end of the year.

“We have so much going on ahead of the launch of Allura in just over a year,” said Chef Alex. “But there are exciting plans afoot for all our ships. We have new dishes to unveil in Red Ginger, our signature pan-Asian venue; there will be an expansion of Oceania Cruises’ exclusive wine pairing luncheon options; and a fresh look at the menus for the grande dame of the line’s dining venues, The Grand Dining Room.”

PortMiami Is Now Shore Power Ready

by Julie Bouchner June 18, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Yesterday, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava celebrated the launch of shore power at PortMiami, a system that enables cruise ships to plug into landside electrical power while docked, reducing emissions and noise.

“As Mayor, I vowed to protect our environment; shore power has been my personal dream and initiative. We embarked on this journey in 2021, thanks to an innovative partnership with our major cruise line partners and Florida Power & Light Company,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Shore power is a great example of progress in tourism and clean energy converging. Together, we are creating jobs, expanding our economy, and preparing to meet the dynamic needs of tomorrow.”

MORE ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP

Miami-Dade County and major cruise lines are partnering to provide shore power at five berths in PortMiami, making it the first major port on the U.S. eastern seaboard to offer this capability. By the end of the year, 21 cruise ships will be equipped for shore power, resulting in over 350 vessel calls. Switching to shore power reduces cruise ship emissions by up to 98%. This saves the equivalent of removing 7,500 cars from the road annually.

Miami-Dade County aims to balance economic growth with sustainability at PortMiami, investing $4.2 billion in NetZero initiatives.

“We are committed to being a sustainable global gateway,” said Hydi Webb, PortMiami Director and CEO. “We thank our Mayor, County Commissioners, and port partners for their continued support of our resilience initiatives.”

11 Cruise Ship Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 17, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a veteran sea voyager, you want to ensure you’re getting the most out of your trip. That’s where the best cruise ship hacks come in. From money-saving hacks and organizational tips to clever packing essentials you may not have considered, these are the best insider secrets to bookmark for your next cruise vacation.

Arrive a day early

Avoid the panic of potentially missing your ship due to flight delays or traffic by booking a hotel close to the port for the night before. Check which hotels in the area offer perks, such as free transport to the port or ‘Park and Cruise’ discount parking options.

Download the cruise liner’s app before traveling

Most cruise companies have a phone app that is a great resource when onboard. The app allows you to check the day’s onboard activities, your account balance, the day’s menu, and so on.

Make onboard reservations ASAP

Check your cruise line’s app or website to see if you need to make reservations for shows, events, and meals in advance. Pre-booking is common on large cruise ships to avoid all 4,000 turning up at the same time.

Book third-party travel insurance

Travel insurance policies from most cruise lines or agencies are often very expensive and offer minimal coverage, usually only for the cruise itself, which isn’t ideal if you’re staying in the embarkation town before or after your cruise. It’s best to book a separate policy with a third-party travel insurance provider.

Don’t forget an outlet extender

Even if you’re traveling solo, you likely won’t have enough power outlets in your cabin for all your electronic devices. A power strip extender is an absolute must-have, but make sure it’s a cruise-friendly one (extenders with a surge protector aren’t allowed on cruise ships), such as this Cruise Power Strip No Surge Protector with USB Outlets for $17.99.

Pack your hand luggage wisely

You will likely want to explore the ship before your luggage arrives in your cabin, so make sure you pack your swimwear, sun lotion, sunglasses and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag. Don’t forget important documents and medication, too.

Don’t board too early

Most passengers arrive at the very beginning of the embarkation window – or even start queuing beforehand – but if you want to avoid the long wait in line and security check queues, arrive toward the end of the embarkation window. Of course don’t leave it too late and risk any delays; around 30 minutes to an hour before embarkation ends is best if you want to avoid queueing.

Bring over-door hangers or magnetic hangers

Wardrobe space in most cruise ship cabins is often minimal, and there’s never usually enough hangers for all your clothing. Bringing your own over-door hangers or magnetic hangers – did you know the walls and doors of your cabin are magnetic? – will save you a ton of space and avoid your clothes getting creased in cabin drawers when you run out of wardrobe space.

Skip the buffet on the first night

Most passengers tend to have dinner in the main restaurant – usually a buffet – on the first night, which means queues are likely. It also means the onboard specialty restaurants often run special fight-night offers and discounts to help fill the empty tables. Check the itinerary on your app for offers or enquire directly at the restaurant.

Check for first and last-day discounts

Similarly, check for other offers on embarkation day – spas often run first-day deals – and discounts as the cruise ends. Cruise shops often run ‘last day sales’, meaning you can save money on souvenirs.

Save money by doing DIY excursions

One of the easiest ways to save money on your cruise vacation is by researching ports in advance and organizing your own shore excursions. Spend time some learning about the ports by reading travel blogs and guides, decide what you want to see, and simply hop off the ship to explore on your own. If you want to do a guided tour or excursion, find a local company and book in advance to save time and money.

Join Holland America Line in Naming AWCC’s Moose Calf

by Julie Bouchner June 14, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Holland America Line, in collaboration with the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC), invites fans to name a moose calf rescued by AWCC. The cruise line offers guests responsible wildlife viewing experiences in Alaska through ship voyages, shore excursions, and Cruisetours.

Now, fans can name AWCC’s latest addition, a moose rescued and cared for by the center, which provides spacious enclosures and quality care for injured and orphaned animals.

“Holland America Line has been exploring Alaska longer than any other cruise line and we are deeply committed to supporting AWCC in its conservation efforts to protect Alaska’s wildlife,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer for Holland America Line. “Our guests take an Alaska cruise to see wildlife in the region, and moose are part of ‘Alaska’s Big Five.’ We are excited to give our fans the opportunity to participate with the Alaska community in a fun and meaningful way.”

From now through June 23, 2024, people can submit name suggestions for the orphan calf on Holland America Line’s Facebook and Instagram pages. Fans can comment with a name, and our team will select the top 10. The top 10 names will be posted for fans to vote on their favorite. The winning name will be announced in early July.

MORE ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP

  • Holland America Line and AWCC are partnering to protect Alaska’s wildlife.
  • This summer, Holland America Line offers moose encounters at AWCC. Guests can feed the moose by hand and learn about their diet and behavior.
  • Holland America Line Alaska cruises that include Anchorage or Whittier offer two shore excursions to AWCC: Portage Glacier Cruise & AWCC for Anchorage guests, and Turnagain Arm, Wildlife Conservation Center & Alyeska Tram with Airport Transfer for Whittier guests.

“We are grateful to partners like Holland America Line that help AWCC continue the work we do to protect and preserve Alaska’s wildlife,” said Sarah “Howie” Howard, executive director of Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. “Most orphan animals that come into our facility are given a name to help foster a bond not only with our staff, but with our visitors as well. We can’t wait to see what name is chosen by Holland America Line’s fans.”

Five Cruise Ship Mistakes You Should Avoid

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 14, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruise ships are public spaces. You’re there to relax and live your best life, but so are hundreds, if not thousands, of others doing the same. With this in mind, handling yourself and others with respect is important. Think of a cruise ship as a floating version of your town or city- how would you behave if you were back home? To offer some guidance, here are five cruise ship mistakes all travelers should avoid.

1: Wearing The Wrong Attire

Photo by Al Elmes on Unsplash

Each cruise line has its own dress code, so it’s important to adhere to their guidelines, which you should look up before your embarkation day. Wearing overly casual or revealing clothing in formal dining rooms or public areas can be considered disrespectful. Similarly, wearing swimwear in non-pool areas or entering restaurants without appropriate attire can be frowned upon. If you have questions about what you should be wearing, consult the cruise line’s website or reach out to the venue ahead of time for more information.

2: Reserving Deck Chairs/Sunbeds

Photo by Nico Smit on Unsplash

We all know the people who “mark their territory-” leave their towels or belongings on their chairs to save their spots. However, leaving towels or personal belongings on sunbeds by the pool to reserve them for an extended period is generally discouraged. It’s unfair to others who may be seeking a spot to relax. If you’re not using a sunbed, it’s best to leave it open for someone else.

3: Being Late For Departures

Photo by Robert Horvick on Unsplash

It’s crucial to be punctual when the ship is scheduled to depart from a port. Delaying the ship’s departure because you’re running late can inconvenience other passengers and disrupt the cruise schedule. Plan your excursions accordingly, and always allow yourself ample time to return to the ship before it sets sail.

4: Ignoring Personal Hygiene

Photo by Ana Essentiels on Unsplash

Remember, cruise ships have tons of public areas and dining venues, so it’s important to maintain proper hygiene. Neglecting your cleanliness, such as skipping showers, not wearing deodorant, wearing strong perfumes, or being inconsiderate about personal space, can make others uncomfortable. This isn’t middle school anymore, y’all.

5: Overindulging In Alcohol

Photo by Omar Lopez on Unsplash

We get it- you’re on vacation and want to let loose. However, just because you can order pina coladas and rum punches to your heart’s content doesn’t mean you should. It’s essential to drink responsibly, as excessive drinking can lead to disruptive behavior, causing inconvenience or discomfort to fellow passengers. It’s important to be mindful of your alcohol consumption and respect the ship’s rules and regulations regarding alcohol (because trust and believe that they do have them).

Remember, cruise ships are a shared space, and being considerate of others ensures an enjoyable experience for everyone on board. Remember the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. Enjoy your cruise!
