Top 5 Ways to Save Money on Your Next Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 14, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising offers a unique experience, but costs can quickly add up. Here are five effective ways to save money on your next cruise:

1. Book Early or Look for Last-Minute Deals

Timing is crucial for booking a cruise. Booking well in advance can unlock great deals, including discounts and perks like free upgrades. If your schedule is flexible, consider booking at the last minute, as cruise lines often reduce prices to fill empty cabins close to departure dates.

2. Set a Budget for Extra Expenses

Beyond the cruise fare, there are additional costs to consider, such as excursions, specialty dining, and tips. Create a budget for these extras to prioritize what you want to experience without overspending.

3. Research Destination Ports

While shore excursions through the cruise line can be pricey, researching ports ahead can save you money. Look for affordable or free activities, and consider using public transportation or guided walking tours to explore the area at a lower cost.

4. Choose the Right Cabin

Choosing the right cabin type can impact your overall budget. If you plan to spend most of your time exploring the ship and destinations, consider booking an inside cabin. You can enjoy the same ship amenities without the added cost of ocean views or balcony rooms.

5. Take Advantage of Free Onboard Activities

Cruise ships provide various complimentary entertainment options, including shows, classes, and game nights, allowing you to fill your days without additional costs. To make the most of your experience, check the daily schedule and plan your time accordingly to take full advantage of everything included.

A cruise can be an affordable travel option. Planning and being mindful of expenses can save money while enjoying your trip.

Your Pre-Cruise Checklist

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 13, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Before you head off on your cruise, it’s a good idea to complete a few key tasks to help everything go smoothly. Here are five easy things to do to enhance your enjoyment and help reduce stress.

Check Passport and Documentation

Before setting sail, make sure your travel documents are in order. Start with your passport; it should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date, as many countries require this to account for unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, check if you need any visas for the ports of call on your itinerary. It’s wise to keep a photocopy of your passport and travel documents in a separate location. Consider using a waterproof pouch for easy access while on board.

Book Excursions in Advance

While cruises provide many onboard activities, many travelers eagerly anticipate exploring the ports of call through guided excursions. Research the available shore excursions for each destination on your itinerary and consider booking them in advance. This guarantees your spot on popular excursions and ensures a more organized experience. Whether you’re interested in exploring ancient ruins, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or enjoying a wine-tasting tour, planning will help you secure the most memorable experiences.

Pack Wisely

Packing for a cruise can be tricky, as you’ll need clothing suitable for various activities, from formal dining to beach days. To streamline your packing:

Check the Dress Code: Different cruise lines have different dress codes, especially for the dining venues. Make sure your outfits adhere to these guidelines.

Essentials: Don’t forget necessary items like sunscreen, swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, and a lightweight jacket for cooler evenings.

Accessorize: Bring binoculars for whale watching, a waterproof phone case for beach days, and a backpack for excursions.

Medicine Kit: Stock up on seasickness medication, pain relievers, and any personal prescriptions to avoid inconveniences at sea.

Notify Your Bank and Credit Card Companies

Traveling abroad can challenge your financial management skills. Before your cruise, notify your bank and credit card companies about your travel plans. This proactive approach can prevent your cards from being flagged for suspicious foreign activity. Additionally, inquire about international transaction fees, as these can add up, mainly when using your cards in multiple ports. Lastly, consider bringing a small amount of local currency for destinations that may not accept cards or where cash is preferred.

Review and Purchase Travel Insurance

Cruises are all about fun and relaxation, but it’s wise to prepare for unexpected events. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind by covering cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and trip interruptions. Before purchasing a policy, consider the specific coverage options that best suit your needs. While some cruise lines offer insurance packages, comparing them with independent policies is beneficial to finding the best deal. With proper coverage in place, you can set sail with confidence.

So, grab your sunscreen, pack your bags, and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime!

6 Must-Have Apps for Smooth Sailing

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 12, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Planning a cruise can be complicated, with numerous details, such as the itinerary and onboard activities. To make this process easier and enhance your overall experience, a range of apps can be quite helpful. Here are six useful travel apps that every cruiser should think about downloading for a more enjoyable trip.

Cruise Line’s Official App

One of the first things you should do before embarkation is to download your cruise line’s official app. These apps often provide a wealth of information at your fingertips, including real-time updates on your itinerary, deck plans, dining reservations, onboard activities, and shore excursions. They also often feature messaging services to communicate with fellow passengers without incurring roaming charges. Apps like those from Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Celebrity Cruises are great examples of this functionality.

PackPoint

Packing can be a stressful part of preparing for your cruise. PackPoint takes the guesswork out by helping you create a customized packing list based on your travel destination, the length of your trip, and planned activities. Input your cruise itinerary into the app, and it will generate a list of recommended items to ensure you’re well-prepared for every leg of your journey.

Google Translate

If your cruise includes international stops, Google Translate can be a lifesaver. This app breaks language barriers by allowing you to translate text, voice, and even images (like menus or signs) in real time. You can download specific languages for offline use—perfect for wandering around a port without Wi-Fi.

TripIt

TripIt helps you organize all your travel plans in one place. Forward your confirmation emails for flights, hotels, and excursion bookings, and the app will create a master itinerary automatically. This way, you’ll have everything you need at a glance, helping you stay on top of your plans, especially if changes arise while you’re on board.

Google Maps

Download Google Maps before setting sail, as it can be invaluable when exploring new ports. It can help you navigate unfamiliar areas and save maps offline, making it easier to find your way around without needing data. This app is perfect for discovering local attractions, restaurants, and hidden gems.

WiFi Finder

Staying connected while at sea can sometimes be challenging and costly. The WiFi Finder app helps you locate free and paid Wi-Fi hotspots at various ports and cities. You can search for active networks based on your current location, so you won’t waste time trying to get connected. Plus, connecting with family or sharing your vacation highlights in real-time can be pretty rewarding!

While these apps are essential for enhancing your cruise experience, always ensure your devices are charged and invest in a portable charger. This way, you can keep all your travel tools handy throughout your journey.

With these six apps in your travel arsenal, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate your next cruise adventure easily. Bon Voyage!

Top Five Benefits of Cruising During Any Season

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 9, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising is a flexible vacation option suitable for any season. Each season offers unique experiences, making it an appealing choice for travelers. Here are five key benefits of cruising year-round:

Variety of Destinations

Different seasons offer unique opportunities across regions. For example, Winter is ideal for sunny Caribbean getaways or mild Asian destinations. Summer is suited for cooler spots like Alaska or the Scandinavian fjords. Spring showcases Japan’s blossoms and Europe’s vibrant culture, while fall highlights New England’s stunning foliage. Cruising year-round allows you to customize your trip based on your preferences, ensuring you enjoy the sights and adventures each destination has to offer.

Fewer Crowds

Cruising during off-peak seasons can enhance your experience. Traveling at less popular times often means encountering fewer tourists at popular ports, leading to shorter lines and less crowded onboard spaces. This creates a more intimate atmosphere, whether dining or enjoying entertainment. You’ll have more chances to engage with the crew, participate in activities, and join excursions, enriching your voyage with personal interactions and unique experiences.

Year-Round Activities

Many cruise lines take advantage of the seasons by offering a variety of onboard activities specific to each time of year. During winter, you could join festive holiday celebrations and themed parties or enjoy cozy movie nights under the stars. In the warmer months, outdoor deck games, water activities, and exciting excursions that highlight the beauty of nature are available. No matter the season, there’s always something happening onboard, ensuring that your time at sea is just as enjoyable as your adventures on shore.

Flexible Itineraries

With a wide array of cruise options available year-round, you have the flexibility to choose an itinerary that aligns with your schedule and preferences. Whether you’re searching for a quick weekend getaway or a longer voyage that visits multiple destinations, there’s a cruise to suit your needs. This adaptability allows you to optimize your cruise experience around work commitments, family obligations, or even the best environmental conditions for your chosen destinations.

Affordable Options

Cruising can be an affordable way to travel, particularly if you take advantage of off-peak pricing. Many cruise lines offer promotions, discounts, and bonuses like upgraded accommodations or onboard credits during certain months. By choosing to cruise during these times, you can enjoy a luxurious experience without stretching your budget. Furthermore, most cruises package together accommodations, meals, entertainment, and even excursions, enabling you to experience more while effectively managing your finances.

Whether you dream of a sunny Caribbean getaway in winter or a summer expedition to glaciers, consider setting sail for your next adventure today!

What to Expect on Your First Day of a Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 8, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Embarking on your first cruise is an exciting adventure filled with new experiences. However, the first day can also be a bit hectic and overwhelming, especially with the boarding process and adjusting to your new surroundings.

Here’s a rundown of what to expect on the first day of your cruise to help ease any uncertainty.

Arriving at the Port

Plan to arrive at the cruise terminal a few hours before your scheduled boarding time. This gives you ample time to check in, pass through security, and handle any last-minute details.

Parking can be busy, so factor in time to find parking and possibly take a shuttle to the terminal.

Check-In Process

Once you arrive, you’ll go through a check-in process. Have your documents (boarding pass, ID, and passport) readily available. The cruise line will usually provide specific instructions on required documents, so double-check beforehand.

Expect to go through security screening — just like at an airport — so leave prohibited items (alcohol, certain foods, etc.) at home.

Boarding the Ship

After check-in, you’ll receive a boarding group number. When your group is called, you’ll board the ship!

Upon boarding, the crew will greet you with drinks and a welcome aboard atmosphere. Take a moment to soak in the excitement!

Exploring Your New Home

Your cabin might not be ready upon boarding (usually by mid-afternoon), but you can start exploring the ship. Familiarize yourself with the layout, amenities, and decks.

Check out any onboard activities, as many ships offer guided tours for newcomers.

Lunch and Dining Options

Many cruise ships have buffet-style restaurants open for lunch on the first day. This is a great way to get your bearings while enjoying some food.

If you’re interested, you can also make reservations for specialty dining restaurants during the day.

Muster Drill

Before departure, all guests must participate in a muster drill. This safety briefing teaches guests how to respond in emergencies, find their muster station, and use life jackets.

This is a critical part of your cruise experience, typically short and straightforward.

Sailing Away

Once everyone has completed the muster drill, you can relax as the ship sets sail. Head to a deck or lounge area to enjoy the view as you leave the port.

This moment is often celebrated with music, drinks, and a festive atmosphere — a perfect way to kick off your cruise adventure!

Evening Activities

Your first evening will be filled with activities. Check the daily schedule (often found in your cabin or via the cruise line’s app) for shows, dinner options, and entertainment offerings.

Don’t be shy about meeting fellow passengers or joining a group activity. Many people are eager to make new friends on their journeys!

Understanding what to expect on your first day will make you enjoy a smoother transition and fully embrace your cruise experience. Soak in the sights, relax, and let the adventure begin!

Here’s How to Book Your First Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 7, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Booking your first cruise can feel overwhelming with the options, prices, and promotions available. Understanding how cruise pricing works and knowing when to book can save you money and ensure you have a vacation you’ll cherish for years. Here are some essential tips to guide you through the booking process.

Know the Types of Cruises

Mainstream Cruises: These are offered by well-known cruise lines and target a vast audience. They often provide competitive prices and a variety of onboard activities.

Luxury Cruises: If you prefer a more upscale experience, these cruises offer premium services, finer dining, and excursions.

River Cruises: Smaller and often more intimate, river cruises typically focus on cultural experiences at various destinations.

Research Pricing Trends

Cruise prices can fluctuate significantly based on the season, the itinerary, and the ship’s size. Off-peak times, like late fall or early spring, often have lower prices than peak travel seasons.

Last-minute deals are common but may leave limited options, especially if you have specific requests (e.g., cabin type).

Keep an Eye on Promotions

Cruise lines frequently offer promotions that can include perks such as onboard credit, free excursions, beverage packages, or reduced fares. To stay informed, sign up for cruise line newsletters and follow them on social media.

Consider booking during wave season (January to March), when many lines incentivize bookings with various discounts and perks.

Utilize a Travel Agent

Travel agents who specialize in cruises can be invaluable. They have extensive knowledge of different cruise lines and promotions and can often access exclusive deals unavailable to the public.

An experienced agent can also provide insights into which cruises coordinate best with your interests and budget.

Understand the Cost Breakdown

The cruise fare often only covers accommodation, meals, and entertainment. Additional costs may include gratuities, beverages, specialty dining, and excursions. Consider these when budgeting for your cruise.

Some promotions might include gratuities or a drinks package, making them worth considering for booking.

Consider Cabin Types and Locations

Different cabin types (interior, oceanview, balcony, or suite) come with varying price points. Choose based on your comfort level and budget.

The ship’s layout may affect your experience, so consider the location of your cabin in relation to common areas (like pools and restaurants) and potential noise levels.

Be Flexible with Itineraries

If you have flexibility in your travel dates, be open to different routes or ships. Sometimes, changing your departure port or length of the cruise can lead to significant savings.

By following these tips, you can easily navigate the booking process and find the best deal for your dream cruise. Happy sailing!

Enjoy Shore Excursions Without Missing Ship Departure

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 6, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising lets you explore exciting destinations through various shore excursions, offering unique experiences at every port. However, balancing adventure with punctuality is essential. Here are tips to maximize your shore excursions while ensuring you don’t miss your ship’s departure.

Know Your Ship’s Schedule

Before you step off the ship, familiarize yourself with your cruise itinerary. Take note of the following:

Arrival and Departure Times: Understand when the ship arrives and departs each port. This will help you gauge how much time you have to explore.

All-Aboard Time: This is usually set a little earlier than the departure time. Mark it on your calendar or your phone to ensure you don’t lose track of time.

Plan your Itinerary in Advance

Having a solid plan can make all the difference:

Research Destinations: Before stepping off the ship, look up key attractions, local restaurants, and experiences that interest you.

Organized Tours vs. Independent Exploration: Consider booking excursions through the cruise line, which typically guarantees timely returns. If you prefer to explore independently, make sure you have a clear plan for travel times.

Prioritize Must-See Attractions

With limited time in port, decide what’s most important to you:

Top Priorities: Identify the one or two items you want to see and have backup options if time allows for additional activities.

Set Time Limits: Allocate specific time windows for each activity to avoid losing track of time—after all, once you’re immersed in a local culture, it can be easy to get carried away!

Factor in Travel Times

Understanding the logistics of getting back to the ship is critical:

Local Transportation: Learn about the best transportation methods in advance, such as taxis, buses, or ferries. Make sure you know how long each will take, considering potential traffic or delays.

Return Point: Designate a specific landmark or meeting point where you’ll regroup with your traveling companions before returning to the ship.

Set and Stick to a Return Time

Create a timeline that allows you to return well ahead of the “all aboard” deadline:

Plan to Leave Early: Aim to leave at least 30 to 60 minutes before the designated return time. This buffer can help accommodate any unexpected delays.

Use Alarms and Alerts: Set alarms on your phone to remind you when to head back. This will help you avoid the “just 5 more minutes” mentality that can lead to panic later.

Be Flexible

Be prepared for potential changes and exercise caution during your exploration:

Listen for Announcements: Cruise lines typically broadcast important information regarding departure times. Keep your ears open for any updates while onshore.

Be Flexible: If you find an interesting spot but realize you’re running out of time, pivot your plans to ensure a prompt return.

Respect the Ship’s Departure

As tempting as it might be to squeeze in one last adventure, it’s essential to be aware of the following:

Communicate with Travel Partners: If you’re traveling with family or friends, set a collective agreement on return times to ensure everyone is on the same page.
Have a Backup Plan: If you’re exploring independently, know your options for returning to the ship if you miscalculate your return time.

We hope these tips help you enjoy each destination’s excursions while knowing your ship’s call time!

Culture, History, and Nature:

Known for its exceptional subtropical climate year-round, Tenerife is an ideal destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure. The island offers numerous opportunities to explore its rich history and culture. The Carnival is a vibrant celebration that takes place immediately before Lent, with its dates varying between February and March, depending on the year. The island offers numerous opportunities to explore its rich history and culture, and one of the most spectacular events is the Carnival de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which spans 15 days and is filled with flamboyance and fun. The celebration kicks off with the Carnival Queen’s gala on the first Wednesday, drawing thousands to witness the festivities, which feature elaborate costumes, musical performances, parades, and dancing.

Visitors can wander through the streets of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, experiencing its colonial architecture and bustling markets. La Laguna’s old town is a treasure trove of historic churches, typical places to enjoy and buy local products, artistic sites, and palaces. This historic quarter, once the capital of the island, is linked to the current capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, by a tram. During Easter Week, La Laguna holds a significant celebration, unique in the Canary Islands. Each night, saints accompanied by brotherhoods walk through the old quarter. The highlight is the Magna Procession on Good Friday, where processions gather at the Cathedral and move into the streets. The Procession of Silence, featuring the dead Christ, is held early in the morning at the Parish Church of Santo Domingo, making this a deeply enriching cultural experience for visitors.

The natural beauty of Tenerife is simply breathtaking, particularly at iconic sites like Anaga Country Park, situated in the island’s oldest region. Here, winding valleys, turquoise waters, and majestic mountain ranges earned the park UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2015. The towering Teide Volcano at 12,198 feet, the world’s third-tallest volcano if measured from the ocean floor, offers unparalleled vistas and holds UNESCO World Heritage status.

The dramatic cliffs of Los Gigantes, plunging almost vertically into the ocean, present a unique sight best experienced by renting a speedboat or sailboat to explore the stunning coastline. Montaña Amarilla epitomizes Tenerife’s volcanic landscape with its serene beach hidden in an ancient volcanic crater, inviting visitors to enjoy a swim in its crystalline waters.

No visit to Tenerife would be complete without experiencing its diverse beaches. Playa de las Américas, near the island’s southwest tip, features international restaurants, hotels, nightlife, and beautiful golden sandy beaches. For those seeking a picturesque black sand beach, Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz offers stunning views of Mount Teide and is an ideal spot to visit.

The charcos, or natural pools, are among the world’s most unique attractions. Formed from hardened lava and fed by ocean water, these unforgettable pools exhibit rich colors, intriguing shapes, and diverse aquatic vegetation. Some of the best charcos to visit include Charco de los Chochos, Charco del Rayo, and Charco de la Laja. A visit to any of the natural pools on the island promises a tranquil swimming experience in a safe environment suitable for both children and adults alike.

Do Good While Traveling

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine August 5, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

You can do some good for the Earth while you’re traveling to distant lands — or even just a few miles from home.

Here are a few ways recommended by the European hotel group Green Pearls:

  • When you’re visiting new places, use public transportation or walk, when possible, rather than driving. You’ll see more and help keep pollutants out of the air.
  • Find out about beach or forest clean-ups in the area and pitch in.
  • At your hotel, waive daily housekeeping. Reuse your towels when possible. Some hotels offer a donation to sustainability-minded organizations for each day you pass on having your room cleaned.
  • As a day’s excursion, get to know the destination and meet some locals by getting involved in tree-planting campaigns.

Every little bit helps.

Alaska Railroad Approves Seward Cruise Port with Royal Caribbean Group

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 2, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

On Thursday, the Alaska Railroad’s Board of Directors approved purchasing a $137 million cruise facility in Seward. This begins construction of the largest turn port in Alaska, set to open in spring 2026.

Upon completion, the Alaska Railroad will acquire the facility for $137 million, including debt linked to a 30-year pier usage agreement with Royal Caribbean Group, which will have preferential berthing rights. The Alaska Railroad will own and operate the facility as an open dock for multiple cruise lines.

“Large developments are never easy. Today’s greenlight approval was two years in the making. The Alaska Railroad Board’s decision to purchase the new facility shows the value of the certainty of the partnership between Royal Caribbean Group, Turnagain, Seward Company, and the executive team at the Alaska Railroad created,” said Mickey Richardson, CEO of the Port of Tomorrow, representing the ownership of the Seward Company. “The agreement guarantees cruise ships will continue to serve Seward for the next 30 years and beyond.”

ABOUT THE FACILITY

  • 68,000-square-foot turn port terminal.
  • Handles cruise ship provisioning.
  • Serves as a community space.
  • 750-foot floating dock with two berths for modern cruise ships.
  • Future maintenance capability at Seward’s shipyards.
  • Supports fresh water, local fuel, and shore power.
  • 150-foot transfer span connects to Alaska Railroad and ground transportation.

“It will be the largest floating pier in the state” said Jason Davis, President of Turnagain, the design/builder of the Seward port. “Alaska’s infrastructure growth, and for that matter, the growth of the tourism industry, depends heavily on projects supported by the cruise industry, global travel partners, and Alaskans,” added Davis.

The visitor industry is Alaska’s second-largest private-sector employer, providing one in ten jobs (52,000) and generating an economic impact of $5.6 billion. The Seward cruise port is essential for the future of Alaska’s travel industry, ensuring the viability of the Cross-Gulf turn port and supporting tourism development in Southcentral and Interior Alaska.

“The Alaskan experience is at the heart of our decades-long agreement with the Alaska Railroad and the city of Seward,” said Preston Carnahan, Royal Caribbean Group, AVP West Coast Destinations. “This new facility supports our commitment to deliver incredible experiences to our guests while also developing a state-of-the-art facility and community hub. This reinforces our commitment to the Seward community who has graciously welcomed us to their beautiful home.”

Construction on the new terminal will start after the 2024 Alaska cruise season. The foundation is expected to be in place before winter, with pier construction planned for fall 2025. The grand opening is set for spring 2026.

“The existing passenger dock has brought incredible economic opportunities to Seward over its lifetime, but after 60 years of service it’s imperative that we replace this aging infrastructure,” said Bill O’Leary, CEO of the Alaska Railroad. “We’re glad to have partners that recognize that fact as well, as this project would not be possible without Royal Caribbean’s 30-year commitment. The new dock represents a great investment in Seward as well as Alaska’s travel industry across the state, and we’re excited to help support the next 60 years of industry growth and opportunity in our state.”
