Are Chef’s Table Experiences Worth It?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 26, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Chef’s Table experiences on cruises offer intimate dining, customized menus, and direct chef interaction. Here’s a look at what they entail and examples of cruise lines known for offering this experience.

What is a Chef’s Table?

A Chef’s Table experience is a unique dining event held in a private area of a cruise ship’s main dining venue. It typically involves:

Intimate Settings: These dining events are often limited to a few guests, creating a cozy and personal atmosphere. This exclusivity allows for personalized service and deeper interaction with the chef.

Curated Menus: Each experience features a meticulously planned multi-course menu that showcases the chef’s creativity and expertise. Dishes are often inspired by the culinary traditions of the regions the ship visits or reflect the chef’s passion and style.

Interactive Experience: Guests can engage with the chef who prepares the meal, learning about the ingredients, cooking techniques, and inspirations behind each dish. This interaction enhances the overall dining experience, making it educational and entertaining.

Themed Events: Some cruise lines offer themed Chef’s Table events, such as wine pairings, regional cuisine nights, or unique collaborations with celebrity chefs.

Chef’s Table Experiences

Many cruise lines offer the Chef’s Table experience. Here are two examples of cruise lines:

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers an exceptional Chef’s Table experience featuring a five-course meal designed by Global Culinary Ambassador Chef Daniel Boulud. The exclusive menu showcases his soulful French cuisine. Guests will receive a printed copy of the menu, a photograph of their dinner experience, and a cookbook by Chef Boulud. Wine pairings for each course are available for purchase on board.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean offers the Chef’s Table, an exclusive dining experience that invites a small group of guests to join a private culinary journey led by the ship’s Chef de Cuisine. Each course is paired with a selection of wines to enhance the flavors.

Check with your cruise line to see if they provide this experience!

Why Experience a Chef’s Table?

Here are some reasons to consider this dining opportunity on your next cruise:

Culinary Education: Gain insights from talented chefs and learn about new ingredients, techniques, and cooking philosophies.

Intimate Connections: Build rapport with fellow guests and the chef, making it a social as well as a culinary experience.

Memorable Meals: Create unforgettable memories with a meal highlighting your cruise journey.

Exclusive Access: Enjoy the exclusivity of a specially curated event that many travelers may not have the chance to experience.

With the opportunity to savor exquisite dishes, engage with talented chefs, and learn about the art of cooking, you’ll find that these experiences elevate your cruise vacation to new heights. Bon appétit!

Tips for Cruising Internationally

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 25, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising internationally lets you explore diverse cultures and stunning landscapes while visiting multiple ports in a short amount of time. Here are essential tips to ensure a smooth voyage.

Cruising internationally can be one of the most exhilarating ways to explore new cultures, stunning landscapes, and historic sites. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or considering your first international cruise, preparing for an overseas adventure is essential. Here are some practical tips to ensure a seamless and enjoyable journey.

Research Your Destination

Before you set sail, take the time to learn about the countries and ports you’ll be visiting. Understand the local customs, languages, and currencies. This knowledge will enhance your experience and help you navigate unfamiliar environments.

Key Aspects to Consider:
Cultural Norms: Familiarize yourself with the local etiquette regarding greetings, dress codes, and dining practices.
Language Basics: Learn a few essential phrases in the local language. Even a simple “hello” or “thank you” can go a long way.

Check Passport and Visa Requirements

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date. Some countries also require visas for entry. Check the visa requirements for each port of call and apply well in advance if necessary.

Pro Tip:
Keep photocopies of your passport, visa, and any essential documents separately from the originals. This will help you in case of loss or theft.

Get Travel Insurance

Consider purchasing comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and unexpected events. It’s a small investment for the peace of mind it provides, especially during international travel.

Pack Smart

When cruising internationally, packing wisely is crucial. Here are some items to include in your luggage:

Versatile Clothing: Opt for layers that can be mixed and matched, accommodating both warm days and cooler evenings.
Comfortable Footwear: You’ll likely do a lot of walking, so bring comfortable shoes suitable for formal dining and excursions.
Power Adapters/Converters: Different countries have different plug types and voltages, so pack the appropriate adapters to keep your devices charged.
Medications: Bring enough prescription and over-the-counter medications for your trip and a copy of your prescriptions.

Know the Ship’s Protocols

Different cruise lines have varying policies regarding health and safety, specifically when it comes to international travel. Familiarize yourself with your cruise line’s protocols, including embarkation procedures, health screenings, and vaccination requirements.

Understand Onboard Currency and Payment Methods

While cruising, you’ll typically use the cruise line’s currency for onboard purchases. However, knowing local currency will be helpful when exploring port cities. Consider carrying small cash for small purchases or using a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

Stay Connected

International cruises often have limited internet access. To stay connected with family and friends, consider the following:

Pre-Purchase Wi-Fi Packages: Some cruise lines offer various internet packages you can purchase in advance.
Download Offline Maps and Translation Apps: Use apps like Google Maps or Duolingo to navigate and communicate without internet access.

Plan Shore Excursions Wisely

While many cruises offer guided excursions, exploring independently can be rewarding. If you plan to venture off independently, research reliable local transportation and safety tips.

Tips for Choosing Excursions
Book Early: Popular excursions can fill up quickly, so reserve your spots as soon as possible.
Consider Timing: Ensure you have enough time to return to the ship before departure.

Stay Healthy

International travel can expose you to different health risks. Protect your health by:

Keeping up with vaccinations is recommended for the countries you’re visiting.
Practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, especially during flu season.
Staying hydrated and eating balanced meals onboard and during excursions.

Enjoy the Experience

Finally, remember that cruising internationally is about enjoying new experiences. Embrace spontaneity, engage with fellow passengers, and immerse yourself in the ports of call.

With thoughtful preparation and an adventurous spirit, your international cruise can be an unforgettable experience. By following these tips, you’ll begin your journey, ready to explore the world’s wonders. Bon voyage!

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 24, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Fall cruises offer travelers a unique experience with beautiful scenery and milder weather. However, packing for this season can be challenging due to fluctuating temperatures and the possibility of rain. Check out our guide to essential outfits and packing tips to help you prepare for your autumn cruise.

Know the Weather

Before you start packing, check the weather forecast for your cruise destination. Fall can bring cool breezes, warm afternoons, and occasional rain, so being informed will help you stay comfortable.

Layer Layer Layer

Layering is essential for adapting to changing temperatures. Consider packing these items:

Lightweight Sweaters: Ideal for cooler evenings on deck.
Long-Sleeve Tops: Versatile options that transition well from day to night.
Jackets: A waterproof jacket is important for rainy days, while a light coat or cardigan works for chilly evenings.
Scarves: Useful for added warmth and easy to pack.

Choose Versatile Bottoms

Select bottoms that can be mixed and matched easily:

Jeans: A classic option that pairs well with various tops; dark denim can elevate your look for formal nights.
Trousers: Lightweight and breathable options for both onboard activities and excursions.
Leggings: Comfortable and versatile, suitable for lounging or exploring.

Focus on Footwear

Footwear should be practical and comfortable:

Comfortable Walking Shoes: Essential for port days filled with exploration.
Flip-flops or Sandals: Perfect for the pool deck or casual outings.
Dressy Shoes: Necessary for formal nights or special dinners onboard.

Don’t Forget Accessories

Accessories can enhance your outfits and offer protection:

Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the fall sun.
Sun Hat: Practical for shielding yourself from UV rays.
Evening Jewelry: Add a polished touch to dinner outfits.

Practical Packing Items

Travel Umbrella: Lightweight and easy to pack for unexpected showers.
Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while minimizing waste.
Small Backpack or Tote: Useful for day trips and excursions.

It is time to hit the seven seas! We hope you have an amazing fall cruise!

World First: Ponant Trans-Arctic Voyage Reaches North Pole of Inaccessibility

by Grant Balfour September 23, 2024
written by Grant Balfour

Le Commandant Charcot, the world’s first luxury icebreaker, has celebrated a new first: The ship has become the first to sail to the North Pole of Inaccessibility. On board, 20 scientists marked the event with guests and crew on a journey from Nome, Alaska, to Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, Norway.

“Reaching the North Pole of Inaccessibility is a moment of rare intensity,” says Captain Étienne Garcia.
This is the third North Pole Le Commandant Charcot crossed on this journey, having passed the Magnetic North Pole on September 13 and the Geographic North Pole on September 15.

RELATED: PONANT TO VISIT THE ANTARCTIC IN 2025-2026

How can there be three poles?

The Magnetic North Pole is the point where the Earth’s magnetic field is focused and where the needle of a compass would begin to point downward to the center of the Earth. It moves as the molten interior of the planet moves, and since the early 2000s has been gradually flowing from Canada toward northern Russia.

The Geographic North Pole is the arbitrary point where all the lines of longitude converge on a map; in other words, where every step you take in any direction is southward.

The North Pole of Inaccessibility, on the other hand, is a sailor’s measurement. It’s the point in the Arctic Ocean pack ice that’s farthest from any landmass. It’s currently pinpointed at 85°48′N 176°9′W, or about 626 miles (1,008 kilometers) from  Henrietta Island in the De Long Islands, from the Arctic Cape of Severnaya Zemlya, and from Ellesmere Island in Canada.
In 1927, Hubert Wilkins flew over the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility for the first time in a plane, but until now, no one had ever set foot on it.
A crowd of travelers in orange parkas holds up a NORTHERN POLE OF INACCESSIBILITY sign on the deck of Ponant's Le Commandant CharcotLe Commandant Charcot made it to this remote point thanks to a Polar Class 2 (PC2) hull, with minimal environmental impact thanks to a hybrid electric engine powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ship’s complement of scientific researchers were able to collect data in person in a region that has never been explored so directly.

Remembering Montréal

by Bill Panoff September 23, 2024
written by Bill Panoff

Montréal, the jewel of Québec, is a city that captivates me with its unique blend of Old-World charm and vibrant modernity. The moment I arrive, I’m drawn once more into its rhythms—an infectious groove laid down by art, culture, and food.

Downtown Montreal, taken by Bill Panoff

Walking through Old Montréal feels like being transported to a romantic European city, strolling down cobblestone streets past centuries-old architecture. The Notre-Dame Basilica, with its stunning Gothic Revival design, is an amazing sight. But there’s more to the city than its past—Montréal is alive with creativity. Whether it’s during summer festivals like Jazz Fest or the winter magic of Igloofest, the city pulses with artistic energy.

Montréal is a paradise for food lovers. From world-famous bagels to indulgent poutine, it’s impossible to leave the city without taking delight in its food. I always take time to visit bustling markets like Jean-Talon, where the colors, smells, and flavors of fresh, local produce never fail to inspire. (Try the artisanal jam on a fresh-baked baguette and you’ll understand.)

Visiting Montréal before or after your cruise makes perfect sense. It’s a city of unforgettable experiences that perfectly complements the cruise experience, whether you’re viewing autumn leaves on the St. Lawrence Seaway or on a luxury voyage to the Maritimes and beyond. Bill Panoff and Audrey Balbiers-Panoff toasting each other in Montreal.

But more than anything, it’s the people and the atmosphere that truly make me love Montréal. There’s a welcoming spirit in the air, a casual yet sophisticated vibe that’s hard to describe. The mix of French and English, the café culture, the passion for life—it all creates a city where everyone seems to savor each moment.

It’s no wonder Montréal continues to call me back. Je me souviens!

Double the Wilderness

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine September 20, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Laid-back Caribbean getaways and chic European excursions are wonderful. But lately, some science-minded travelers are opting for less conventional experiences that provide up-close looks at unique forms of life.

One such adventure is The Darwin & Orellana Discovery Tour.

The 11-day adventure allows guests to visit Ecuador’s iconic Galapagos Islands, where Charles Darwin researched his classic Origin of Species. There are animals on those islands that exist nowhere else.

But also included is a trip to the awe-inspiring Amazon rainforest, one of the planet’s last great wilderness areas, packed with unusual plants and animals.

The tour features premium accommodations at Scalesia Lodge and The Finch Bay Hotel.

How to Navigate Cruise Ship Muster Drills

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 20, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Embarking on your first cruise is exciting, but paying attention during the muster drill, also known as the lifeboat drill, is essential. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you navigate this important procedure.

1. Importance of Muster Drills

Muster drills are mandatory safety procedures. They prepare you for emergencies and ensure you know where to go and what to do if needed.

2. Listen for Announcements

Upon boarding, listen for announcements about the muster drill: where and when it will take place. Being aware of these details will help you prepare.

3. Know Your Muster Station

Your cruise card will indicate your assigned muster station. Familiarize yourself with this location to easily find it during the drill.

4. Arrive on Time

Punctuality is crucial. Arrive early to ensure you receive all necessary safety information and to not disrupt the drill.

5. Follow Crew Instructions

Pay close attention to the crew as they explain safety procedures, including signals and life jacket use. If you have questions, ask.

6. Practice Life Jacket Use

You’ll learn how to properly wear a life jacket. Follow along and practice:

  • Slip it over your head.
  • Adjust it snugly.
  • Familiarize yourself with the whistle and light features.

7. Stay Calm

While drills may cause anxiety, remain calm. The crew is trained for emergencies, and your cooperation is important for everyone’s safety.

8. Understand Emergency Procedures

During the drill, learn the emergency signals, escape routes, and locations of safety equipment, like fire extinguishers.

9. Engage with Fellow Passengers

Use this opportunity to socialize with other passengers. Building connections can make the experience less daunting.

10. Attend Follow-Up Briefings

Some cruise lines may offer additional safety briefings. Attend these for more specific procedures that could be helpful during your cruise.

Remember, if you have any questions or feel unsure at any point, don’t hesitate to ask the crew for help—they’re there to ensure your safety and comfort. With this knowledge, you can enjoy your cruise with peace of mind.

21st ship for NCL boasts street-art design, 10-percent boost in capacity

Norwegian Cruise Line has just revealed (and opened for sale) the newest Prima Plus–class ship, Norwegian Luna, set to launch in April 2026 from Miami.

The new ship features a 10-percent larger size and capacity (1,056 feet long, 156,300 grt, and 3,550 guests) than the Prima-class ships  Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, and will be a twin sister to Norwegian Aqua, due for delivery in March 2025.

Both Aqua and Luna are currently under construction at Italy’s Fincantieri shipyard.

Luna’s hull art will consist of a piece titled La Luna by Napa, California, street artist ELLE, who has gained fame for her partnerships with brands like Nike, Reebok, Kohler, and Ralph Lauren.

The piece is intended to show how the moon influences the ebb and flow of the tides and, as a cosmic force, shapes the movement of humanity.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Norwegian Cruise Line, who has been known for showcasing stunningly designed hull art across its entire fleet,” says ELLE. “It’s been an incredible experience crafting this piece and knowing my 1,056-foot piece of artwork will sail across the seas, traveling the globe for all to see.”

The new ship will also feature the Aqua Slidecoaster, a first-of-its-kind hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide, as well as the Glow Court, which will be an interactive digital sports complex by day and nightclub by night. The exclusive ship-within-a-ship, The Haven, will have Three-Bedroom Duplex Haven Suites, expansive, two-story staterooms with three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Dining options aboard Luna will include specialty Thai restaurant Sukhothai and Indulge Food Hall with 10 different food stations (including the plant-based Planterie) in addition to old favorites like Cagney’s Steakhouse, Onda by Scarpetta, and Le Bistro.

Norwegian Luna is scheduled to sail from Miami to ports across the Caribbean and the Bahamas. For more information, see Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Luna.

Celebrating Milestones on a Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 18, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Celebrating life’s milestones aboard a cruise offers a unique opportunity to create lasting memories. Whether you’re marking a birthday, anniversary, or retirement, these essential tips will help you plan the perfect celebration.

Choose the Right Cruise Line

Select a cruise line that fits your celebration needs. Research options based on demographics and onboard experiences that suit your occasion—family-friendly environments for kids or romantic atmospheres for couples.

Select the Perfect Itinerary

Review itineraries to find one that offers exciting ports of call. Longer cruises provide more opportunities for exploration, so consider which destinations will enhance your celebration.

Personalize the Experience

Many cruise lines offer personalization options, such as custom cakes and special dining experiences. Communicate your preferences in advance and inquire about any available celebration packages.

Plan Group Activities

Coordinate group activities in advance, such as shore excursions or themed dinners. Check onboard entertainment options for concerts and shows that everyone can enjoy.

Capture the Moments

Document your celebration by utilizing professional photographers available on board. Encourage guests to share their photos using a dedicated hashtag to compile memories later.

Prepare for Celebratory Extras

Add thoughtful touches like small gifts or surprise elements in the room. Coordinate with the cruise staff to help facilitate special moments during the trip before and during the cruise.

Whatever you’re celebrating, we hope these tips will help you plan an unforgettable experience for you and your guests.

A Luxury Lab for Green Living

by Kate Wickers September 17, 2024
written by Kate Wickers

They say that it is the arrival that should be savored, when all the travel is behind you and adventure lies ahead. I’ve never enjoyed this sweet moment more keenly than arriving at Calanoa Amazonas in Colombia. I step off the high-speed boat that has whisked me 60 miles along the Rio Amazon from Leticia, the final-frontier capital of the Amazonas province, most spectacular at sunset when thousands of small pericos (parrots) flock to roost in Parque Santander.

I’ve arrived at a laboratory of sorts, where owners Marlene and Diego Samper are experimenting with age-old methods and new ways to live sustainably within the rainforest, and paying guests are welcome to be part of their journey. Marlene, an environmental educator, and Diego, an artist and designer, both have a life-long passion for ecology. They opened their boutique jungle eco-lodge in a 50-hectare reserve in the Amacayacu National Park with the aim of contributing to the conservation of both nature and culture through sustainable and respectful tourism. Today, this unique retreat extends to seven cabins, designed, as Diego describes them, “as pieces of art.” Using nothing but local materials, the duo have relied much on the skills of the indigenous Tikuna people in realizing their dream. Natural artwork comprises Diego’s canvases, which he suspends from trees to soak up the environment and are formed primarily by tree molds washed down by the rain. The result is patterns in oranges, pinks, and greens that take on the surprising shapes of shells, leaves, and bark.

No two lodgings are the same and unusual architectural detail is key: There’s one with a secret, internal garden; one with a boat-like structure; another suspended in a tree; while my two-story palm-roofed cabin has a hammock-strung deck with views to the river. The cabins are built on stilts to improve air circulation (forget air-conditioning or the hope of a ceiling fan), and hot water isn’t reliable (although who needs it when it’s 90 degrees F?). But there’s no shortage of beauty and style with handmade wooden furniture, and beds are romantically and practically draped in mosquito nets. When Conde Nast Traveler added Calanoa to their Gold List, it was in recognition of the beauty of the location and design, rather than its mod-cons … so do not arrive expecting a power shower. Keeping things simply furnished was purposeful: so that your senses away aren’t distracted from the jungle surroundings. Meals are of an excellent standard, though choice is limited, and are eaten communally with other guests, which brings the chance to chat over jungle experiences. I listen in awe as my neighbor describes the sighting of an armadillo by moonlight, while I recount the joy of an encounter with an aotus — an owl-faced monkey, the smallest and shyest of all Amazonian primates.

Being so completely away from it all adds a .…

River vs. Ocean Cruises: Which Suits You?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 17, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Choosing between a river cruise and an ocean cruise can be challenging. River cruises explore scenic waterways and charming towns, while ocean cruises cover larger distances with a variety of onboard activities. Understanding the key differences will help you decide which cruise type suits your travel style. Let’s take a closer look.

Itinerary and Destinations

River Cruises
River cruises usually focus on a specific region, often exploring multiple cities, towns, or landmarks along a river. These types of cruises allow passengers to immerse themselves in each stop’s culture, history, and local cuisines. Destinations are often easily accessible from the ports due to their proximity.

Ocean Cruises
Ocean cruises cover broader geographic areas, sailing between distant ports and often visiting various countries and continents. Passengers spend more time at sea but can experience a wider range of cultures and environments during the journey.

Ship Size and Capacity

River Cruises
River cruise ships are typically smaller, accommodating 100 to 200 passengers. This creates a more intimate atmosphere, allowing for personalized service and quieter surroundings.

Ocean Cruises
Ocean cruise ships can be significantly larger, with capacities ranging from hundreds to thousands of passengers. This means a wider range of onboard activities, entertainment options, and dining experiences, but it can also lead to a more crowded environment.

Experience Onboard

River Cruises
On river cruises, the focus is usually on relaxation and enjoying the scenic views. The amenities tend to be more subdued, featuring cozy lounges, fine dining, and opportunities for cultural enrichment through local tours and guest speakers.

Ocean Cruises
On the other hand, ocean cruises often offer diverse entertainment, including pools, theaters, nightclubs, and more extensive dining options. Activities can range from rock climbing to cooking classes, catering to a variety of interests and age groups.

Pace of Travel

River Cruises
With generally slower travel speeds, river cruises allow for a more leisurely exploration of each destination. This leisurely pace gives travelers more time to enjoy each port without the rush associated with larger ocean vessels.

Ocean Cruises
Ocean cruises tend to have a more fast-paced itinerary, stopping at major ports for shorter periods. Excursions can often feel rushed, especially if you want to explore multiple attractions in one visit.

Pricing and Value

River Cruises
While river cruises can seem pricier upfront, they often include many amenities such as excursions, meals, and drinks in their pricing. The exceptional service and intimate experience can also enhance the overall value.

Ocean Cruises
Ocean cruises may advertise lower base prices, but extra costs can accumulate quickly through excursions, specialty dining, and onboard activities. However, they often offer good deals on week-long trips, especially during off-peak seasons.

The choice between river and ocean cruises depends mainly on your travel preferences. A river cruise may be the perfect fit if you enjoy cultural immersion, intimate settings, and scenic views. However, if you prefer a diverse range of activities, larger ships, and broader itineraries, an ocean cruise might be more your style. Consider what matters most to you and then get to booking!

Norwegian Aqua to Premiere ‘Prince’ Show

by Julie Bouchner September 16, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Today, Norwegian Cruise Line announced that Norwegian Aqua will host two new shows, “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince” and “Elements: The World Expanded,” beginning in April 2025.

Norwegian Cruise Line will feature a range of entertainment options, including exclusive productions and popular returning shows. Among these is the immersive tribute show “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince,” created in collaboration with Prince Legacy, LLC and Primary Wave Music. This concert-style experience will celebrate the acclaimed artist with hits like “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Delirious,” and “Purple Rain.

“For decades, NCL has set the standard in entertainment at sea, with worldclass productions and talent that rivals those found in major cities like Las Vegas, New York City and London,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “For Norwegian Aqua, we are thrilled to build on our legacy of excellence in entertainment to offer our guests more options across the ship, including exclusive original productions that cannot be seen anywhere else on land or at sea.”

ENTERTAINMENT UPDATES

NCL will also enhance its highest-rated show, “Elements,” with “Elements: The World Expanded.” This revamped version blends acrobatics and magic, inspired by the elements of earth, wind, water, and fire, promising a captivating performance.

Both shows were created by NCL’s in-house team at the Creative Studios in Tampa, Florida, in collaboration with Broadway choreographer and director Patricia Wilcox, a longtime partner of NCL. The Creative Studios has produced original shows, costumes, and entertainment since 2008.

New and returning entertainment options include The Aqua Theater & Club, The Improv at Sea, a comedy club, The Price is Right LIVE on NCL, a game show, and Syd Norman’s Presents: Rumours, a Fleetwood Mac tribute show, which will be held at The Aqua Theater & Club to accommodate more guests.

Revolution: A Celebration of Prince

This hour-long show is an original NCL production celebrating Prince’s music and legacy, highlighting his rise as a global icon in soul, rock, and pop. Set in the Aqua Theater & Club, the performance offers an immersive experience with options to watch from the dance floor or traditional theater seating.

“I’ve always been inspired by Prince and the idea came to me, nearly seven years ago, to create a theatrical concert that would joyfully celebrate his music and exceptional artistry,” shared Patricia Wilcox, conceiver, director, and choreographer of “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince.” “After loving my past collaborations with the team at Norwegian Cruise Line, and seeing the beautiful, multi-purpose theater aboard Norwegian Aqua, I knew we would be wonderful partners for this collaboration, and I’m honored to bring this show to life alongside the NCL team, Prince Legacy, LLC and Primary Wave Music.”

Charles F. Spicer Jr., managing partner for Prince Legacy, LLC, said, “Collaborating with NCL to present a new show featuring the music of global icon Prince is an exhilarating journey into a world of timeless rhythm and electric energy.  Our shared passion for his legendary sound transforms every performance into a celebration of his extraordinary legacy. We look forward to the launch of Norwegian Aqua featuring this thrilling show, and we have no doubt that this musical showcase will have everyone talking and wanting to see the show over and over again.”

Jeffrey Straughn, Chief Branding Officer at Primary Wave Music, adds, “We’ve been working with NCL over the years with our artists on various themed cruises and the passion, excitement, and energy from them continues to be undeniable. As partner in the Prince world, Primary Wave is thrilled to be part of this celebration of his life and music with the development of this concert and immersive experience aboard NCL’s newest ship, Norwegian Aqua. This will truly be a one-of-a-kind event for both fans old and new.”

Elements: The World Expanded

Fifteen years after its debut on Norwegian Spirit, Patricia Wilcox’s “Elements” has become one of NCL’s top-rated shows. With the launch of Norwegian Aqua, it will be revamped as “Elements: The World Expanded,” offering an immersive experience that celebrates the four elements—earth, air, water, and fire—through magic, aerial acrobatics, music, and dance.

The Aqua Theater & Club

The Aqua Theater & Club will transform from a theater into a Vegas-style nightclub with a large dance floor, interactive chandelier, and advanced lighting. It will feature two bars and host themed experiences such as “90s Party,” “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” and “Pop Life,” which celebrate Prince’s music. The venue will also present “The Welcome Aboard Show,” showcasing a preview of onboard offerings, followed by “Ocean Music Fest,” an immersive concert with multiple musicians.

“From vibrant production shows to parties, musical performances, game shows, comedy and more, we have struck just the right balance of offering something for everyone to enjoy on board Norwegian Aqua,” added NCL’s Vice President of Entertainment Production, Bryan Anthony White. “Our talented performers and the staff behind-the-scenes who bring our original productions to life are one-of-a-kind, and their dedication, passion and effort truly shines through when watching these exceptional shows. Our team is already working to bring these new entertainment offerings to life on board Norwegian Aqua and we look forward to wowing our guests when it sets sail next year.”

Norwegian Aqua 2025 Itinerary

Beginning April 2025, Norwegian Aqua will offer seven-day Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida, visiting Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), Tortola (British Virgin Islands), St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), and Great Stirrup Cay (NCL’s private island in the Bahamas). After the Caribbean season, the ship will sail five and seven-day voyages to Bermuda from New York City from August to October 2025, followed by five and seven-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami from October 2025 to April 2026.

Why You Should Slow Travel On Your Next Vacation

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 13, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

For many, vacations are synonymous with jam-packed itineraries that can leave even the most level-headed, stressed and overwhelmed. There’s often a pressure to see everything, go everywhere, and make every second count. And while this mindset can surely lead to excitement and fulfillment on your vacation, there’s a popular new alternative taking the travel industry by storm: slow travel.

What Is Slow Travel?

Slow travel is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of packing a month’s worth of sightseeing in a week-long vacation, slow travelers embrace the calm and relaxing side of discovering new destinations and focus on living like a local. More than simply a style of traveling, slow travel is about shifting your mindset away from checking things off a bucket list and towards truly connecting with the local cultures and communities in the places you visit.

So what does this look like in practice? In many cases, this means opting to stay in one location for a longer period of time instead of visiting multiple destinations, one right after another. Taking your time in one location not only allows you to explore more of what that place has to offer, but it also gives you time to rest, relax, and recover from the typical stresses that traveling can induce.

At the end of the day, slow travel is all about ditching the FOMO and embracing the fact that every vacation destination is more than its most popular tourist attractions. By letting yourself be inspired by the communities around you, and by allowing yourself to mesh in with the natural energy of the unfamiliar destination, you will experience a wholly unique and enriching cultural trip with memories and human connections made that will last a lifetime.

The Benefits of Slow Travel

Photo by Caleb Maxwell on Unsplash

Planning a slow travel experience comes with a host of benefits. First and foremost, slow travel allows you to truly get to know a new place and live like a local. You spend your mornings perusing the local markets and having a picnic in the park. You wander through the streets with no goal but to enjoy the feeling of being someplace wholly new and unfamiliar. You extend your stay in a city that captures your heart instead of hurrying on to the next with the mere purpose of checking it off your travel bucket list.

This slower pace truly allows you to get into a natural and relaxing rhythm during your vacation, allowing you to unwind from the stresses of everyday life and experience a new version of yourself simultaneously.

Another benefit of slow travel is that it is often more affordable than a traditional vacation. Many hotels, hostels, and Airbnb’s offer discounted rates for longer stays, meaning if you stay in one destination for a longer period of time, you can save money compared to visiting a new city every few days. Furthermore, by ditching the most popular restaurants and traveling outside the touristy neighborhoods, you’ll find the true hidden gems of the location for a fraction of the price.

Slow travel also offers the perfect opportunity to self-reflect and introspect. When you don’t fill your vacation with attraction after attraction, you give yourself time to breathe and take in the present moment. This is the perfect time to challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone. Go to that local dive bar where nobody speaks fluent English. Go to that yoga class in the park and strike up conversations with people who grew up in the area. By taking the space to slow down on vacation, you have the opportunity to learn not only about the destination, but also about yourself. And that is truly what makes a vacation unforgettable.

Slow Travel on Cruises

Photo by Oliver Sjöström on Unsplash

The cruise industry can perfectly cater to the world’s growing number of slow travelers. While many traditional cruise itineraries geared towards family vacations offer packed itineraries with endless possibilities to stay on the go, they can also be the perfect vehicle for the traveler looking to slow down their schedule.

One of the amazing perks of cruise travel is the ease with which passengers can adapt their itineraries to their wants and desires. For those hoping to be constantly on the go, many entertainment and recreational options are available. And for the slow traveler, you get to spend your voyage sailing on a resort with all the luxurious amenities you could imagine.

For those wanting to relax, reading by the pool or getting a massage in the spa center is the perfect way to spend the day. For those wanting to connect with fellow travelers, mingling at cocktail hours and participating in group activities such as fitness classes or cooking lessons is the perfect opportunity to meet new people.

Cruises give travelers the chance to visit new destinations, all the while curating the type of vacation that is perfect for them. And for slow travelers, the possibilities for unwinding and relaxing instead of rushing around to every group excursion package are endless.

Photo by Matheus Ferrero on Unsplash

Ultimately, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all travel style. Each person can and should tailor their vacations to their own interests, desires, and needs. Many people love to spend their vacations hopping from activity to activity, and those experiences can be wholly invigorating and enriching. But opting for a slow travel experience has something unique to offer. These more mindful experiences can be the perfect opportunity to truly get to know a new destination down to its DNA. By taking the pressure to see everything out of the equation, slow travelers are left with the incredible ability to stop and smell the roses. And that experience is truly priceless.
