Sea, Sky, and Mangroves

by Kate Wickers December 15, 2021
written by Kate Wickers

“That fish is walking!” gasps my wide-eyed son Freddie, pointing to a sludgy mud bank within Langkawi’s mangrove forest. He is right. Or rather, he is almost right. For this amphibious mudskipper is, in fact, shimmying with one fin fanned out like a sail on a boat; just one in a menagerie of strange creatures that call Langkawi’s UNESCO Global Geopark home. The 99 islands of the Langkawi archipelago are sandwiched between the Thai island of Phuket to the north and Malaysia’s Penang to the south, with the main island of Pulau Langkawi, at 185 square miles, the only one with significant settlement.

I first visited as a backpacker in 1994, and back then the mangrove forest, trapped between land and sea with leaves that were said to cry salty tears (actually a clever way of filtering the salt from sea water), wasn’t accessible to tourists. My lasting impression was of the island’s abundant birdlife and, in particular, the majesty of the white-bellied sea eagles, which glided on warm thermals above Pantai Kok beach, as they flew to and from their nesting grounds on the tiny offshore islands.

“Lucky,” I remember a fisherman commenting, as he followed our gaze to where one swooped down to snatch a fish from the Andaman Ocean. I realize now that what he meant was that we were lucky to see one, not realizing at the time that these birds of prey were endangered. By the late 90s, numbers had dwindled to just 10 percent of their former population. What an embarrassment for an island that had taken its name from the Malay word for eagle, helang. The Malay government funded a regulated feeding program and within a few years the numbers of breeding pairs had increased, although the continuing practice by tour operators of feeding chicken to the eagles to lure them near to tourist boats is now frowned upon by conservationists. A more environmentally friendly approach is to watch them hunting out at sea — with wingspans of up to 7.2 feet across, there’s nothing more thrilling than seeing these gray-and-white raptors plunge towards their fishy prey with yellow talons outstretched. Then back to the forest canopy they soar, to tear into their haul with a fearsome hooked beak before returning to the nest to feed their young.

UNESCO Global Geopark Status

How near Langkawi came to losing its population of white-bellied sea eagles served as a warning and, in 2007, UNESCO made the wise move of giving the island Global Geopark status, the first accolade of this kind in South East Asia. Conservation work began to preserve the mangrove’s flora and fauna, and its 550-million-year-old limestone karst hills, which rival in age those of Halong Bay in Vietnam and China’s Yangtze River. Exploration of the mangrove channels, with the opportunity to peer into a spider’s web of black mangrove roots, is now one of the island’s biggest attractions. You can go on a wildlife adventure by whisper boat, a traditional long-tail boat with an environmentally friendly and almost silent electric engine.

Carnival Radiance Christened, Begins Sailing from California

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 13, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The newly renovated and renamed Carnival Radiance was christened at ceremony at the Port of Long Beach, California with the ship’s Godmother Dr. Lucille O’Neal and her son, Carnival Chief Fun Officer and NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal as featured guests of the event.

The event was all about celebrating family in honor of the O’Neals making their partnership with Carnival a family affair.  The naming ceremony began with a “We Are Family” video of Carnival Radiance crew members preparing the ship for guests.

“What a special evening it was to celebrate the debut of Carnival Radiance with my son by my side in what truly felt like a “We Are Family” event,” said Lucille. “It has been such a pleasure to be included in these exciting festivities, so I can only imagine how incredible it will be for guests to sail aboard this spectacular ship – they’re going to love it.”

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy was also on hand to present a $25,000 donation to the Odessa Chambliss Quality of Life Fund that honors the lifetime accomplishments of Lucille’s mother who worked in the medical field as a nurse.  The fund’s primary mission is to provide financial contributions to help support students seeking a career in nursing and education.

“Carnival Radiance features all of Carnival’s fan favorites and more, so we are beyond excited to finally welcome her to the West Coast and to our fleet,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “And having Shaq’s mom, Lucille, an accomplished speaker who donates her time and talent to a wide range of charitable organizations as the ship’s Godmother has made it even more special.”

Carnival Radiance Cruise Schedule

The ship, which just underwent a $200 million bow-to-stern makeover, departs today from the Port of Long Beach on its inaugural four-day cruise. Carnival Radiance‘s West Coast-based itineraries include three-day voyages to Ensenada and four-day sailings calling at Ensenada and Catalina Island. Inside Dubai’s EXPO 2020

by Steve Leland December 13, 2021
written by Steve Leland

After a year long delay due to the havoc of the 2020 pandemic, the opening of Dubai’s EXPO 2020 has finally arrived. The grand scale of anything associated with Dubai is on full display stoking one’s wildest imagination, virtually a Disney EPCOT on steroids. Five years of development and the unprecedented participation of 192 countries has led to the first global event of this magnitude since the pandemic, possibly ever.

Exceeding all expectations this showcase of innovation and technology is a testament to the evolution of human achievement, global diversity and culture. The unlimited potential of the world in which we live is examined in three distinct districts: Sustainability, Opportunity and Mobility.

Mobility District

The Mobility Pavilion explores the beginnings of world connectivity through travel. Enter this architectural marvel by taking the world’s largest elevator transporting 160 persons at a time to a darkened dome with 28 foot tall replicas of explorers that paved the way for ancient world exploration. Mobility has spurred the development of humankind, spanning pre-historic Africa to space travel, vast deserts to Mars. The journey through the pavilion takes you from humble beginnings to cutting edge technologies in navigation. Witness the progress of robotic design, drones and jet packs in action in a partly underground arena.

Sustainability District

This district examines initiatives that ensure the continued existence of our home, Planet Earth. Walking through this massive exhibition is an invitation to witness the potential hazards that come with ignoring extravagant consumerism as well as initiatives that could very well overcome the obstacles we face.

The largest country showcase is in this area is the UAE pavilion exposing a combination of architectural innovation, employment of sustainability goals and a storyline synonymous with the goals of the country. Within the district you can stroll beneath massive solar energy and water condensing trees alongside traditional ‘falaj’ irrigation channels. Cultural shows and performances are held in the large outdoor arena.

View the potential of a vertical farm in the Netherlands pavilion, a walk through a forest canopy in the Singapore pavilion or take in the sights and sounds of the Amazon basin in Brazil’s pavilion.

Opportunity District

Witness the inspiring storyline of three everyday persons who have changed lives on the brink of collapse in a pavilion shared by the initiatives of the United Nations. Less about shock and awe technology, it stresses the redeeming value of harnessing nature itself.

The USA pavilion heralds the potential of democratic principles via a moving walkway passing through the country’s historic beginnings and finishing with an exhibition of moon exploration replicas and a massive SpaceX rocket. The Japan pavilion has been praised as one of the most popular with a facade that combines Arabesque and Asanosha patterns. One of Asia’s best kept secrets and home to one of the world’s earliest civilizations is exposed in the colorful Pakistan pavilion.

An Entertainment Showcase with Food For Thought

Referred to as the heart of EXPO 2020, the massive dome and intricate trellised latticework of Al Wasl Plaza serves as a centralized hub for pavilion exploration. The amphitheater doubles as a 360 degree laser projection surface with nightly light and sound extravaganzas alongside live presentations by celebrated performers. With over 60 shows a day spanning 182 days, EXPO 2020 provides once in a lifetime opportunities to experience the world from one location. Watch pop up flash mob tango one minute and be entertained by an impromptu African dance troupe the next. Irish musicians entertain with traditional folk music in the Irish pavilion while a classical pianist dazzles with a Chopin concert in the Polish pavilion.

Catering to the hunger for ethnic cuisine experiences, every taste imaginable is available from over 200 kiosks, cafes and sit down restaurants. Savor the talents of Michelin-starred chefs in elegant venues or enjoy street food culture from scattered food truck sites.

The Rove Hotel brand offers exclusive on-site accommodations with every room overlooking Al Wasl Plaza plus complimentary EXPO entrance.  Although the standard one day entrance fee is just over $27, senior citizens are free and some airlines offer complimentary passes.

Florida Paddleboard Rentals Have Never Been Easier

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 13, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Now is the time of year everyone wants to be in Florida. The Sunshine State really starts to heat up in the wintertime when snowbirds and tourists alike flock to the beaches from Key West to Jacksonville and everywhere in between.

Cruise ships are obviously a big draw for Florida this time of year as Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Cape Canaveral boast the three largest cruise ship terminals by passenger count in the world. Cruisers who fly into South Florida often do so with a pre and post-cruise stay in mind and there’s plenty of fun in the sun to be had for those who do.

One of the best ways to get out and enjoy the Florida sunshine is paddleboarding! Thanks to miles of calm, intracoastal waterways and of course, world famous beaches, there’s no better place for newcomers and pros alike to get out on the water for a paddle. PADL is a new service helping cruisers discover the fun of paddleboarding through simple and affordable rentals at locations all over the state. If you’re thinking about renting a paddleboard in Florida, PADL has you covered!

Paddleboarding

How Does PADL Work?

When it comes to the best all-ages activities in Florida, there aren’t many that come close to the fun of paddleboarding. The problem is, most people don’t own a paddleboard, and if they do, they’re certainly not bringing it with them on their cruise vacation. That’s where PADL comes in. Rather than spend a ton of money on a board or shipping costs, simply rent one for an hour or the day with just a few steps on PADL’s easy-to-use mobile app.

Paddleboarding

Photo: PADL

PADL is the easiest way to get out on the water the next time you’re in Florida. All you need is a phone! Simply download the PADL app by searching your app store or using the QR code found on the self-service paddleboard rack and follow the instructions to get your board off the rack and into the water.

The board rack connects to phones via Bluetooth and users simply choose which number board they want to unlock. Each paddleboard unlock includes a life jacket, a leash and a paddle – everything you need to enjoy the time on the water.

PADL gives you the option how you want to pay. They offer by-the-hour rental options as well as monthly and bi-annual memberships which offer access to boards every day. Monthly membership starts at $24.99 a month and includes multiple board rentals for 2 hours each day and discounted overtime hours. The bi-annual membership offers the same perks but at a reduced six month-rate of $99.99.  A membership with PADL can be used at any of their 20 locations across Florida from Miami to Jacksonville and everywhere in between.

When you’re done your ride, place the paddle and board back into place on the rack and complete your ride via the app. You can then review your ride including the route and stats like time and distance.

Tours and Lessons

If you’ve never ridden a paddleboard before, no worries! PADL is here to help beginners with free tours and lessons from certified PADL guides. The PADL website has a full list of tour and lesson times and locations each month so it’s easier to plan your pre or post-cruise stay in Florida. The boards provided by PADL are great for beginners as they are large and stable, perfect for all-around paddleboarding.

The guides can help you with the basics or advanced paddleboarding, whatever your skill level! If you’re just learning to stand up on the board or are looking for a paddleboard adventure through South Florida’s famous mangroves, PADL makes it happen!

Health Benefits of Paddleboarding

The best part about paddleboarding is you can tailor your ride to your desired level of activity. A paddleboard ride can be a leisurely experience or it can be a full body workout that burns calories and improves core strength and balance. Everytime you dip the paddle in the water, it engages your core muscles, your arms and legs for a true full body workout nowhere near a gym. It’s also a low-impact workout so your joints will thank you afterwards.

Paddleboarding can also be a great way to boost mental health as paddling through South Florida’s calm, warm waters is extremely therapeutic. It’s impossible to have a bad day on the water when the sun is shining and all the stress of daily life simply melts away!

Tips for a Better Paddleboard Ride

Paddleboarding isn’t difficult, but there are a few tips and tricks to help make your ride a lot more fun. The first and most important thing is to wear your life jacket! No matter how good a swimmer you may be, you’re always safer when paddleboarding with a personal floatation device. Also make sure to use the leash which attaches to the lower leg. That way if you fall, the board won’t drift away.

Another tip is to begin on your knees if standing is a challenge. A low center of gravity can help beginners keep their balance and grow more comfortable on the board. When standing, position yourself in the center of the board with a wider stance for balance. Keeping your eyes focused ahead rather than at your feet can also help with balance.

Remember, practice makes perfect! The more time you spend navigating the board through the warm, shallow intracoastal waters of Florida, the better you’ll be and the more fun paddleboarding becomes. Many flock to paddleboarding because it’s an activity you can pursue the rest of your life.

Like with any water activity, checking the weather forecast before you will go a long way in a fun paddleboarding experience. Calm, sunny days are best! Also, make sure you bring a waterproof bag for your phone, wallet and more because there’s always a chance you get wet!

PADL is also looking to expand their locations elsewhere around the country and they’re in the process of making it happen! You can visit the PADL WeFunder page to learn more about where PADL is going and how you can get involved.

If you’ve never tried paddleboarding, you’re missing out on one of the best pre and-post cruise activities in Florida. PADL provides everything you need for a great experience paddleboarding no matter what your skill level. Download the PADL app and get started on your next paddleboarding adventure!

Cruise Deal of the Week – December 10, 2021

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 10, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

It’s never too early to start planning your next vacation! If you’re looking for something a little more exciting than lounging on a Caribbean beach this winter, why not book your next cruise vacation for the great white north of Alaska? The cruise industry got a huge boost this past summer when cruise ships returned to the docks of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and all the rest and it’s looking like 2022 may be one of the biggest years for Alaska cruising yet!

Alaska cruises generally start in the Spring when Winter’s grip on America’s 49th state isn’t quite so strong and it runs through the early Fall. Norwegian Cruise Line is one of our favorite cruise lines in Alaska and they’ve got a cruise deal for in May 2022 that you won’t want to miss!

It’s time for the Cruise Deal of the Week!

5-Day Alaska Inside Passage Cruise Deal

Norwegian Sun will set sail on May 5, 2022 from Seattle, Washington for a five day cruise up Alaska’s Inside Passage with calls on Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia. Inside cabins start at just $571 and NCL is giving away a ton of free perks if you book now. Perks include a $50 shore excursion credit, free wifi, free drinks, free flights, 70% off your second guest and 3rd and 4th guests sail FREE! If the May 5th sailing doesn’t work for you, there’s another sailing a few weeks later on May 26th so pick the one that works best around your schedule.

Norwegian Sun underwent a refurbishment in the Spring of 2018 and added new restuarants and lounges like the Bliss Ultra Lounge, Spinnaker Lounge and Los Lobos Cantina. Specialty restaurants on board include Cagney’s Steakhouse, La Cucina, and Le Bistro.

If you missed out on cruising to Alaska in 2020 and 2021, don’t make the same mistake in 2022!

San Juan’s Sensational Seven

by Grant Balfour December 9, 2021
written by Grant Balfour

Puerto Rico has been through a lot over the past few years. Hurricanes and pandemics might have given the proud Puertorriqueños pause, but they’ve built back better than ever. Now, America’s great Caribbean cruise port is perfectly positioned to become everyone’s favorite island paradise.

It’s got a little of everything: forested mountains, sun-kissed beaches, colonial history, world-class gastronomy, a thriving art scene, and clubs where you can salsa all night long — up-tempo or despacito. Whether you’re returning to San Juan because you can’t get enough or you’re planning your first visit to the Walled City, here are seven sensational ways to get the most out of Puerto Rico’s capital.

Outdoor Salsa Workshop

You’re bound to learn something new about the salsa beat at a class taught in the open air under a gazebo at Jaime Benitez National Park, next to the calm waters of Condado Lagoon. In this class, as in many others throughout the city, professional instructors guide dancers new to salsa through the first steps of the form. By the end of the hour, you’ll be able to step and turn easily, and you’ll be ready for a whole lot of fun in San Juan’s clubs … or anywhere with a dance floor and el ritmo!

San Juan Sunset Sail

Hop aboard the 37-foot-long catamaran Ohana and take in the sights of historic San Juan Bay as the sun sets. Whether you’re thinking of a romantic evening with someone special, or a party with a few friends, you can sip beer, sparkling wine, rum punch, or soft drinks while taking in natural beauty and, if you’re into it, getting the inside scoop on local landmarks from the captain. As sun fades into oranges and reds beneath the waves, you can watch the city lights flickering on the surface of San Juan Bay.

Taino Caving and Culture

Interested in adventuring outside the city limits? Globally renowned photographer Roberto Moreno leads tours into the land of Puerto Rico  — literally — by leading visitors underground. You can descend through more than 60 caves full of fantastic karst formations and petroglyphs carved into the stone walls by the indigenous Taino people long before the Europeans arrived. Along the way, learn about the natural beauty of the island, from its forested slopes to its bioluminescent bays, and attend a workshop on Taino pottery, showing how the first Puerto Ricans made their beautiful, functional art.

Reaching The Apex

by Steve Leland December 8, 2021
written by Steve Leland

apex [ ey-peks ] noun,: the uppermost point, the highest or culminating point, peak, summit, climax.

The latest addition to Celebrity Cruises’ fleet has been christened in perfect agreement with Webster’s Dictionary. Fifteen months of pandemic patience has been rewarded with the long-awaited launch of the stunning Celebrity Apex. While it’s been said that good things come to those who wait, in this case it’s great things, including a new fleetwide policy of including tips, WiFi, and a complimentary Classic Drink Package. Innovative elements that made cruise headlines in the Caribbean on sister ship Celebrity Edge also appear on this dazzling debutante of design making new waves in the Mediterranean.Public areas display a whimsical yet elegant creativity. The three-story, central Grand Plaza is resplendent in design and facilitates friendly gatherings with live music. The upper-level Cafe al Bacio and lower-level Martini Bar add to the ambience with specialty cocktails and coffee, while the adjacent Craft Social evokes a pub with televisions broadcasting sporting events.

Apex Eateries

Flanking the atrium are two specialty restaurants. The Fine Cut Steakhouse, evoking a classic steakhouse atmosphere, serves up prime-grade beef and premium seafood while Le Grand Bistro lunchtime venue morphs into Le Petit Chef and Family in the evenings for an animated tabletop dinner presentation that defies description. Raw on 5 is a sushi lover’s dream and the Rooftop Garden Grill stokes al fresco romance with dining under the stars.

Taking a new approach to meals, Apex offers four main-dining restaurants, each with exclusive design characteristics and ambience. Menus vary from night to night and as their names imply, the Normandie, Tuscan, Cosmopolitan, and Cyprus each offer a distinctive twist on international flavors. Celebrity Select Early or Late dining provides for assigned times and tables while Celebrity Select Dining Anytime  is a popular alternative that allows you to choose when and where you dine.

Adam and Eve would feel at home in the tropical splendor of Eden, a hybrid bar/restaurant blossoming with actual plants suspended from the ceiling and sprouting from the walls surrounding the open kitchen.

An American River Holiday

by Janice Wald Henderson December 7, 2021
written by Janice Wald Henderson

Climb back aboard with treasured purchases — homemade orange marmalade, perhaps, or hand-knitted scarves for the family. Check your watch — time for a gingerbread house-making workshop. The fragrance of pine cones wafts through the riverboat as holiday decorations twinkle. Sure sounds like a Christmas market sail in Europe, but not this time. We’re describing an unabashedly American celebration unfolding here at home, on our iconic waterways.

Consider late November and December prime time for sailing and celebrating on American rivers. On the mighty Mississippi, choose between classic paddlewheelers or modern riverboats (the latter closely resemble European vessels in design). Both promise, well, a boatload of holiday charm.

American Cruise Lines’ Queen of the Mississippi paddlewheeler goes hog-wild on its roundtrip New Orleans cruise, departing December 20, 2021. On shore, count on jaw-dropping visits to decorated to-the-max antebellum homes and plantations in Oak Alley, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi.

Stroll through local Christmas markets, nibbling or sipping regional specialties. Praline candy or liqueur, anyone? Purchase locally crafted gifts, such as hot-pepper jelly, elaborately coiffed and dressed collectible dolls, historic tomes, and county cookbooks. Passengers can also attend holiday concerts or other seasonal events, such as gingerbread-house hotel displays and festivals of light.

On board, the merriment continues with a gift exchange and cookie-decorating class. Even the complimentary cocktail hour goes festive; sip a poinsettia, colorfully fashioned from champagne and cranberry juice.

New American River Cruise Ships

American Cruise Lines’ new American Melody and American Jazz riverboats may vibe modern, but their holiday hearts still beat traditional. Their Christmas voyages, both departing on December 20, 2021, sail from New Orleans to Memphis. The Lower Mississippi itinerary allows browsing charming shops in historic towns like St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi. In the evenings, regional musicians and singers come aboard, honoring the season with song.

All vessels promise memorable Christmas feasts. Cocktail hour can star awesome eats like cheese, charcuterie, shrimp, and crab claws. Expect regional favorites such as seafood chowder with cornbread croutons; entrees like mustard, brown sugar, and rum-baked ham; and crawfish-stuffed redfish with collard greens and lemon caper sauce. Desserts like sweet potato pie and Yule logs hit holiday high notes.

For cruises sailing New Year’s Eve, count on a Mardi Gras-themed onboard gala, with live entertainment and a midnight toast ringing in 2022. The gala dinner usually showcases inspired Southern fare, like corn and crab bisque, pan-seared ribeye steak with crispy fried soft-shell crab, and flourless chocolate torte.

Do and Buy In Dubai

by Steve Leland December 6, 2021
written by Steve Leland

If you are sailing into or out of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the proverbial ‘so much to see, so little time’ is a gross understatement. If you can arrange a pre or post cruise stay, this arid outpost of rampant wealth, fueled by an urge to flaunt excess is well worth the effort. It may not be at the top of your bucket list wishes, but if there is anything you like to do or buy, it is likely you can do it or buy it here.

BUY…

Photo: Steve Leland

At this joyous time of giving, why not zip over to Dubai for a shopping junket to one of the largest malls in the world, the Dubai Mall. If you feel a need to satisfy the urge to shop till you drop, there are more than ample opportunities.

This isn’t your average run of the mill mall. It’s a 3.77 million square foot entertainment center, tourist attraction, food emporium and a world class destination in itself.  And by the way, they have stores too, over 1,200 of them!  Add on two anchor department stores, and over 200 food and beverage outlets and you have a massive shrine to consumerism like you’ve never seen.

If you are so inclined to shop till you drop, there are more than ample opportunities to satisfy the urge. Over 200 of the most coveted luxury brands are slathered throughout the glitzy Fashion Avenue section.

When your feet scream for mercy there are chauffeured carts to take you wherever you wish to go. If your credit card hasn’t yet been swiped to oblivion, you can always finish off your available balance with a visit to the Gold Souk in the ancient Dubai Creek area for some serious jewelry bling

DO…

The entertainment aspect of the mall is also a showstopper.  Within the walls of this mammoth complex you will find the fabulous Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, an ice skating rink large enough to play a full court hockey game, a Virtual Reality Park, art exhibitions, light and sound presentations and stepping outside you can witness the world’s largest choreographed fountain show with the cloud piercing, Burj Khalifa towering half a mile overhead.

Getting high is never a problem with a high speed elevator ascent to the observation deck on the 126th floor of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, you can also visit the tallest hotel, the Gevora, take a ride on the longest driverless metro network or visit the largest man made island shaped like a palm tree

To escape the heat, flee to the Mall Of The Emirates for a visit to the indoor ski resort. This gigantic ski run is completely indoors and offers full rental and ski lift options. There is even a toboggan course along with a penguin parade.

Dubai
Mall Of The Emirates Ski Hill | Photo: Steve Leland

For an intense adrenaline rush experience a white knuckle 4×4 ride bashing desert sand dunes followed by a camel ride and BBQ at a Bedouin camp.  Off of the beautiful beaches you can enjoy parasailing, banana boat rides or Jetski rentals.  Helicopter excursions offer a view of this futuristic utopian city from an eye popping perspective.

This is a city in constant evolution, serving up a virtual mixed grill of culture, entertainment and innovation seasoned by an ego driven aspiration to exceed expectations. Of course we all know that money may not buy happiness, but in Dubai it buys everything else.

Next up EXPO 2020, the greatest show on earth…

Costa Cruises Takes Delivery of Costa Toscana

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 2, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Costa Cruises has taken delivery of their newest ship at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland! Costa Toscana is the second ship under the Costa brand to feature LNG technology, the maritime sector’s most advanced technology for reducing emissions. The ship’s first cruise will depart from Savona, Italy, on March 5, 2022 with calls on Marseille, Barcelona, Valencia, Palermo and Civitavecchia/Rome.

LNG technology is the latest trend in the cruise industry as it enables the almost complete elimination of sulfur oxide emissions (zero emissions) and particulate matter (95-100% reduction), while also significantly reducing nitrogen oxide emissions (direct reduction of 85%) and CO2 (reduction of up to 20%).

“Costa Toscana reinforces our commitment to sustainable innovation by further contributing to the use of LNG applied to cruise ships, a technology that we pioneered. It is an innovation that is part of a constantly evolving path of ecological transition. Indeed, we are also working on testing further innovations, such as fuel cells and batteries, with the aim of eventually achieving the first cruise ship with net zero emissions,” – said Mario Zanetti, President of Costa Cruises. “At the same time, thanks to her excellent and innovative features and services, Costa Toscana will be able to attract new cruise guests, supporting us in consolidating our presence in the Mediterranean and our gradual restart plan”.

Costa Toscana New Features

Along with LNG power, the ship features a series of new technological innovations designed to further reduce environmental impact. The entire daily water requirement is met by transforming seawater using desalination plants. Energy consumption is minimized thanks to an intelligent energy efficiency system. The cruise line will also separate waste collection and recycling of materials such as plastic, paper, glass and aluminum will be carried out on board, as part of an integrated approach aimed at implementing circular economy projects.

A tribute to the Tuscany region of Italy, the ship was curated by Adam D. Tihany and designed to enhance and bring to life in a single location the best of this wonderful Italian region, which gives its name to the ship, its decks and main public areas. The driftwood used to furnish the islands of the new Archipelago restaurant were sourced by “Guardians of the Coast”, the environmental education program for the protection of the Italian coastline promoted by the Costa Crociere Foundation. For every dinner served at Archipelago, Costa Cruises will donate part of the proceeds to the Costa Cruises Foundation to support environmental and social projects.

Antarctica’s Incredible Eclipse

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 1, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Have you ever experienced totality? It happens during daylight every 18 months or so and lasts for just a few precious minutes, but typically only a few thousand people get to experience it. The result of the rare occurrence of the moon slipping perfectly across the sun to block its light, those below get enveloped in a fast-moving moonshadow that brings darkness and the chance to see — for just a few precious minutes — the sun’s spiky ice-white outer atmosphere: its corona, or crown.

That’s a sight that’s coming to Antarctica on December 4, 2021, when a handful of lucky cruisers witness a total eclipse of the sun like no other. Although people have previously witnessed our star, the sun, as it really is — floating alone in space — while on the ice sheet or among icebergs, this is the first polar solar eclipse in modern times when travel has been relatively easy.

So what should you expect? Nothing short of one of the strangest, most powerful experiences of your entire life. Here’s what you need to know about one of nature’s weirdest experiences in one of nature’s greatest environments; a very special Antarctica eclipse, whose totality will herald the darkest skies of your entire trip.

What is a total solar eclipse?

They occur when a new moon crosses the sun as we see it, throwing a narrow shadow of the moon onto our planet. What appears to be happening from our point of view on Earth is due only to a remarkable celestial coincidence, for our sun is about 400 times wider than our moon, but it’s also about 400 times farther away. That’s not always going to be the case because the moon is slowly drifting away from Earth. In fact, it’s reckoned that the moon will eventually appear too small in the sky to block the sun, though not for another 600 million years.

When does the total solar eclipse occur?

This winter’s spectacular event occurs just after 7 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021. The location of a cruise ship within the 300-mile-wide “path of totality” determines exactly when and for how long totality lasts, but figure on around 1 minute 40 seconds. During that time it’s possible to gaze naked-eye at the wondrous sight of the sun’s corona. You may even see explosions on the sun’s surface visible on the edge of the sun as reddish, pinkish prominences.

However, this partial eclipse — for which solar-eclipse safety glasses are required — begins at around 6:18 a.m. from the Weddell Sea, with totality at about 7:06 a.m. through 7:08 a.m. That’s followed by a partial eclipse until the moon eventually moves away from the sun at around 7:58 a.m.

Virgin Voyages Gifts 500 Cruises to Healthcare Workers

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 30, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Scarlet Lady just started sailing from PortMiami, but the team at Virgin Voyages is already making an impact on their new South Florida community. The cruise line is showing its appreciation for the community’s healthcare heroes by giving away 500 complimentary cabins for employees at Baptist Health South Florida to ‘Set Sail the Virgin Way’ this festive season with their friends and loved ones.

Every Baptist employee was eligible to win a four- or five-night “Fire & Sunset Soiree,” “Dominican Daze,” or “Scarlet Caribbean Holidays” voyages, embarking December 15th through the 29th. In celebration of Giving Tuesday, the 250 winners will be announced today, and each employee will receive two complimentary cabins to enjoy the voyage with up to three additional travel mates.

“The past two years have tested our community, and we wanted to find a small way to express our deepest gratitude to all of the healthcare professionals who went above and beyond to keep us safe,”said Tom McAlpin, President and CEO of Virgin Voyages. “We hope a voyage on our beautiful Scarlet Lady allows the Baptist team to enjoy some much-needed R&R this season.”

Giving Back After the Pandemic

This isn’t the first time Virgin Voyages has given back, despite the fact that they quite literally just began operating in the past few months. After the disaster of a year that was 2020, Virgin Voyages  decided to gift 1,000 cruises for Valentine’s Day in a promotion called ‘Shipload of Love’ and they asked guests to nominate those who were most deserving. The new promotion is an extension of that sentiment.

“Throughout this pandemic, our caregivers have embodied the true meaning of sacrifice and heroism, always putting themselves before others,” said Bo Boulenger, President and Chief Operating Officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “We are thrilled with this opportunity to show them our community’s heartfelt appreciation for their selflessness and dedication with this fantastic trip, thanks to our friends at Virgin Voyages.”

A reminder for those sailing on Scarlet Lady from PortMiami, you must must be fully vaccinated and complete a complimentary COVID-19 test prior to boarding!

Emerald Azzurra Completes Successful Sea Trials

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 30, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The very first custom super yacht from Emerald Cruises recently underwent successful sea trials from Ha Long Shipyard in Vietnam, meaning we’re one step closer to stepping foot on board! Conducted by Captain Jonathan Edwards and Marine Operations Manager Robert O’Leary, the sea trials took 48 hours to complete and are used to test the major functions of the ship like steering and max speed. The Captain and Marine Operations Manager were joined by 98 specialized crew, contractors and shipyard staff on board to oversee the trials.

“I’m delighted with the great teamwork that has been achieved in constructing not just the most elegant vessel on the seas, but one that can live up to the high standards we have all grown to expect from Emerald Cruises,” said Captain Edwards.

Glen Moroney, Founder and Chairman, Scenic Group (which includes Emerald Cruises and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours) explained that during the sea trials, the ship exceeded all of it’s set parameters.

“During Emerald Azzurra’s sea trials, all design parameters were exceeded, including speed, noise, vibration and overall comfort and maneuverability whilst sailing. Emerald Azzurra really is a very special superyacht, and will undoubtedly deliver a fantastic experience for our guests,” he said.

Emerald Azzurra Coming 2022

Now, the ship only needs final touches to its interior and exterior, as well as complete the training of the on board teams before she begins sailing in early 2022. The ship accommodates just 100 guests in 50 deluxe suites and staterooms, with more than 80 percent of cabins featuring a balcony. She was built specifically to sail the warm waters of the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Seas. The first itinerary departs January 28, 2022 for an eight-day ‘Best of the Red Sea’ itinerary round trip out of Aqaba, Jordan.

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 29, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Just last week, the team from Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine was on board the brand new MSC Seashore for its naming ceremony at Ocean Cay in the Bahamas. Over the weekend, MSC Cruises held another naming ceremony for the other ship they launched in 2021, MSC Virtuosa. On hand in Port Rashid, Dubai was Hollywood legend Sophia Loren who christened the ship, her 17th in the fleet as well as UAE TV personality Omar Butti who served as Master of Ceremonies.

Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises Pierfrancesco Vago was also on hand and was excited to begin cruising the United Arab Emirates.

“We are thrilled to host this time-honored maritime tradition ceremony in the United Arab Emirates during its Golden Jubilee year and with it, to mark our longstanding and long-term commitment to this region. This is also why this winter, MSC Virtuosa, a new and one of the most technologically and environmentally advanced ships in our fleet, will homeport in the country as part of our deployment in the Gulf region. Cruising is an integral part of the UAE’s dynamic tourism industry and, thanks to our uniquely global distribution network, we will continue to promote the country and the Middle East all around the world as an attractive vacation option to support the further growth of the tourism industry locally.”

Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri echoes the sentiment that Dubai is ready to become a leading tourist destination worldwide.

“Dubai continues to chart a course forward as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations and the cruise capital of the Middle East, as we continually strive to realize the goal inspired by our visionary leadership to make Dubai the most preferred, visited and revisited destination. Hosting the naming ceremony for MSC Cruises’ newest flagship vessel, MSC Virtuosa, in Dubai is a testament to the popularity of the city as the cruise gateway to the region. Dubai’s reputation as a cruise hub continues to grow in stature, and iconic moments and milestone events such as these reflect the crucial contribution of cruising to the city’s tourism industry. With Dubai continuing to welcome international tourists, this event will build on the momentum generated by the recent launch of the new cruise season, further fueling growth during this landmark year for Dubai featuring Expo 2020 and celebrations surrounding the UAE Golden Jubilee, and beyond.”

Mississippi River Cruising Aboard The New American Melody

by Steve Leland November 24, 2021
written by Steve Leland

With international travel and health protocols still presenting challenges, there’s no better time to experience close to home cruising. With the launch of American Cruise Lines’ new American Melody, that choice of convenience is even more apropos. The company’s current fleet of vessels ply the iconic rivers and waterways of the United States but their Grand Heartland Cruise perfectly captures the spirit of the Mississippi River in style. With an itinerary that might level a challenge to lesser vessels, the American Melody carves its way through a 1600+ mile serpentine path from St Paul, Minnesota to New Orleans, literally dissecting the country.

Unlike the grand rivers of Europe, you won’t find historic cathedrals or ancient relics of the past lining the banks of Old Man River, but what you will encounter is endemic Americana with a profound charisma of its very own. Witnessing the colorful spectacle of season changes is an inherent bonus of our late autumn sailing with the inimitable itinerary expertly curated by American Cruise Line.

Before casting off for 15 days of river adventure, taking in the city of St. Paul, MN. and its sights with a one night hotel stay compliments of the cruise line is the perfect preamble to the journey down the mighty Mississippi.

Rollin’ On The River

Choosing from a full agenda of complimentary shore excursions in each port is a staple of ACL’s inclusive format and soaking up the 19th century charm of Winona, MN. is an appropriate preview of ports ahead. Sailing southward, experience the down home hospitality and sights of Dubuque, Davenport and quaint Ft. Madison, Iowa. In America’s Hometown, Hannibal, MO, the exploits of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are brought to life through colorful narrative on the ship’s A Walk With Mark Twain excursion. Tour guide extraordinaire, Richard Garvey concludes the tour with a noteworthy, in character performance as Mark Twain in the historic Planter’s Barn Theater.

Mississippi River Cruise
Graceland | Photo: Steve Leland

Midway through the cruise the itinerary deviates from small town USA with a two day visit to the ‘Gateway to the West’, St. Louis. Although you won’t hear tales of historical empires and kings on a Mississippi River cruise, you can visit the mecca for worshippers of our homegrown monarch, the King Of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley.  An exclusive VIP tour of Graceland in Memphis, TN. is an in-depth journey into the life of America’s undisputed musical royalty.

Venturing into deep south Mississippi, explore the antebellum architecture and gain insight into the roots of the Civil War in historic Vicksburg. Authentic southern charm is prominently on display in Baton Rouge, LA. and an incursion into bayou country is an opportunity to view the creatures of the swamp.

It’s All Aboard

Arrival in the Big Easy, New Orleans, LA., signals an end to a captivating 15 day itinerary that is more than enough to stoke patriotic appreciation for the ‘good ole’ USA, but it’s the catchy theme of the American Melody that hits all the high notes that contribute to a relaxing cruise experience, sidestepping hard rock energy in favor of an easy listening, smooth jazz aura.

Displaying a sleek contemporary look and decked out with upscale furnishings, the vessel is a far cry from the bulky steamers chronicled in Mississippi River lore. With a maximum capacity of only 175 guests, there is sentiment of camaraderie that is missed on larger vessels. Contributing to the congenial ambiance, a 100% American crew enthusiastically attend to every need and the luxurious balconied suites provide a distinguished cruise experience sans tuxedoed formality and ostentatious surroundings.

As the ship navigates along its course, the spacious upper sun deck is expertly designed for outdoor leisure time with comfortable lounge chairs and accoutrements. The indoor Sky Lounge with its centrally positioned sky window is ideal for viewing the passing cinema of nature and in the evening serves as a convivial gathering point for pre-dinner cocktails and appetizers. The River Lounge sets the scene for fascinating river lore presented by a well versed historian with musicians and cabaret entertainers performing nightly after dinner.

American Melody

The al fresco Ellipse cafe located on the aft of the ship serves made to order comfort food from 11am until 5pm and the full service main restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Inclusive of beverages, a selection of fine wines and complimentary excursions in each port, there is little left to add into any cruise budget considerations.

The 2,340 mile river that has served the country for centuries as an aquatic corridor of commerce has redefined itself as an exciting cruise destination. It’s a journey of subtle discovery, visiting cities and towns with fascinating stories to tell that hold a bookmark in American history.

American Cruise Lines is the only 100% US fleet operating exclusively on American rivers and waterways and the upcoming launch of the American Serenade and American Symphony will increase the company’s fleet to 15 vessels. Current policy stipulates that all guests must be fully vaccinated and are subject to COVID-19 testing by the company prior to boarding.

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 24, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When was the last time you really felt a sense of adventure? One of the best things about travel is it awakens within us a natural curiosity about the world we live in and fuels our sense of adventure and desire to experience new things. Of all the islands in the Caribbean, St. Kitts is known for fostering adventure and excitement for those who decide to visit.

While it features all the traditional Caribbean relaxation, St. Kitts also offers adventure-seekers a chance to get out and explore everything the island has to offer. If you’ve never explored St. Kitts, here are some of the best ways to get out and enjoy this slice of Caribbean paradise!

Kitesurfing

St. Kitts’ Best Water Activities

One of the best ways to feel a sense of adventure in St. Kitts is to get out on the water! The warm waters of the Caribbean Sea are the perfect place to dive coral reefs and get up close and personal with the amazing tropical wildlife that lives under the sea. There’s also a number of sunken shipwrecks to explore like the remains of the M.V. River Taw which lies off of Frigate Bay Beach. There are a number of private diving and snorkeling providers on the island and they can tailor your experience for beginners or seasoned divers.

Another fun way to get out on the water is kitesurfing. Beach Addiction St. Kitts is one of the top services on the island and they will have you surfing around the calm, warm waters around St. Kitts in no time! Kiteboarding or Kitesurfing involves riders harnessing the power of the wind via a large kite while skimming across the top of the water on a surfboard-like device. It can look intimidating at first, but it’s a ton of fun and not as hard as you think!

Rent an ATV

St. Kitts was formed eons ago by a volcano and that makes for one unique island! Towering peaks and plunging valleys lush with tropical fauna make for the perfect backdrop for an ATV adventure through the rainforest. One of the most popular shore excursions for cruisers visiting St. Kitts, an ATV adventure offers visitors the chance to see a side of St. Kitts you can’t get in downtown Basseterre. Sunny Blue is one of the island’s top ATV, dune buggy and scooter rental provider has all the toys you need to have a blast. Four-person ATV options means fun for the whole family and guests can opt for guided tours or to explore the island on their own.

Live Action ‘The Little Mermaid’ Comes to Disney Wish

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 22, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

We’re going to have to wait a little longer before we can sail on board the upcoming Disney Wish from Disney Cruise Line, but today we got some new details about the ship’s entertainment lineup. The ship will feature two brand-new theatrical productions; a Broadway-style take on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Little Mermaid” and an embarkation day celebration helmed by Captain Minnie, Goofy and an all-star cast of Disney and Pixar characters.

“‘The Little Mermaid’ is a timeless story, one that transcends generations,” said Shelby Jiggetts-Tivony, vice president, creative and advanced development, Disney Live Entertainment. “Our hope is that this new stage adaptation aboard the Disney Wish continues that incredible legacy, not by simply reenacting the elements that make the original film so powerful, but by reinterpreting it in a way that resonates with the audience sitting in the theater each night.”

As you might expect, entertainment is a huge part of any Disney cruise thanks to the brand’s history and the Walt Disney Theatre found on board their fleet. On the Disney Wish, the 1,274-seat theater is inspired by scenes from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Fantasia,” with orchestra and balcony seating spanning three decks. The theater will be equipped with state-of the-art technology, including the most robust projection mapping capabilities of any Disney ship and a Dolby Atmos 3D audio system — a first for the cruise industry.

The Little Mermaid Live Action

Disney teamed up with some of the top performers on Broadway to help develop a production where storytellers take on the roles of Ariel, Ursula, Prince Eric, Sebastian, Flounder and more, bringing to life the immersive undersea world right before guests’ eyes.

“Disney The Little Mermaid” will feature never-before-seen theatrical design, stunning special effects, artistic choreography, and a reimagined script and score that will surprise and delight fans of the iconic story. Some of the reimagined storylines include:

  • New orchestrations of favorite songs like “Part of Your World,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Under the Sea” will enchant audiences with moving ensemble pieces and breathtaking production numbers.
  • Unexpectedly playful scenic designs and state-of-the-art video projections will transform the Walt Disney Theatre into 360-degree undersea environment.
  • Contemporary, interpretive costuming will reflect the show’s unique blending of a modern setting and a mystical, fantastical story.
  • Cutting-edge puppetry will animate fantastical sea creatures and characters such as Sebastian, Flounder, Scuttle, and Flotsam and Jetsam in never-before-seen ways.
