Viking Star completes sea trials

Viking Star, the first ship of Viking Ocean Cruises, completed sea trials in the Aegean Sea, the line said. There’s a video to prove it.

The week of intense diagnostics for the 930-passenger ship had maritime experts executing more than 80 different tests to check everything from the ship’s engine and propulsion performance to cabin acoustics.

So what does the ship’s first captain think? Captain Gulleik Svalastog said Viking Star is “one of the most agile, state-of-the-art, and seaworthy ships on the water, destined to exceed the expectations of the most well-traveled guest.”

The ship is back at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard getting finishing touches and the first guests come aboard April 11 for a cruise from Istanbul to Bergen.

The feature we’re most anxious to see: the infinity pool that cantilevers off the ship’s stern. The spa’s “snow grotto,” where snowflakes descend from the ceiling, also sounds, well, cool.
