Princess Makes a Splash at Rose Bowl

If you weren’t one of the 80 million or so people watching the Rose Parade on TV, you may have missed an industry first — a cruise-line logo made of blueberries — plus, the original cast of The Love Boat TV series waving from Los Angeles–based Princess Cruises’ first-ever float in the parade.

The “50 Years of Inspiring Travel” float, celebrating the line’s 50^th anniversary, was 60 feet long, 24 feet high and, in the tradition of the Pasadena parade, festooned with 24,000 flowers including roses. Depicted was Princess’ newest ship, Regal Princess, its white hull replicated with large white navy beans, white mums, and button mums.

The ship was in “water” accented by dark blue and white iris, and cruising past landmarks around the world (Big Ben, the Sydney Opera House, the mountains and wildlife of Alaska), created with flowers and other natural materials including potatoes, green grapes, and seaweed.

The publicity fest around the float included an appearance Tuesday morning on NBC’s Today, a giddy Al Roker joining The Love Boat cast – Captain Stubing (Gavin MacLeod) et al – for a singalong of the show’s iconic theme song, “Come aboard, we’re expecting you…” The float was awarded the Craftsman Trophy for Exceptional Achievement in Showmanship and Dramatic Impact.
