Carnival Cruise Line to Set Sail for China in 2017

Carnival Cruise Line is the latest cruise line to announce that it will begin cruise operations in China starting in spring 2017. The line will base one ship there year-round to offer cruises marketed to Chinese guests. (Specific ship and itinerary will be announced in the near feature.)

Carnival said it will offer its usual vacation experience to Chinese guests, including family programming and entertainment options, however some aspects of the shipboard experience will be modified to cater to Asian tastes.

“More than 4.5 million guests a year choose to spend their vacations with us,” said the line’s president, Christine Duffy. “We look forward to introducing Chinese consumers to the Carnival brand.”

The news is part of an announcement by Carnival Corporation (parent company to 10 cruise brands) about its China expansion plans for 2016 and 2017, which includes being the first global cruise company with six ships based in China in 2016 (Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises ships) — a 58 percent capacity increase. Also recently announced is that Princess’ upcoming ship, Majestic Princess, will be bound for China and specifically built for the Chinese market when it launches in Shanghai in 2017.
