Navigating Flu Season While Cruising

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 9, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As the holiday season approaches and temperatures drop, flu season is upon us. While a cruise offers an exciting escape, taking precautions is essential to ensure your trip isn’t marred by illness. Here’s your guide to staying healthy while cruising.

Understanding Flu Season on a Cruise

Flu season typically peaks between December and February but can start as early as October. With passengers in close quarters, cruises can be environments where viruses spread easily. However, you can significantly reduce your risk of getting sick with some preparation.

Get Vaccinated

Consider getting a flu shot before your cruise. Vaccination protects against the virus and is highly recommended for travelers. Check with your healthcare provider about getting vaccinated in advance.

Practice Good Hygiene

Good hygiene is crucial on a cruise. Here are some practices to adopt:

  • Wash Your Hands Frequently: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using the restroom, before eating, and after touching common surfaces.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer: Carry hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water aren’t available.
  • Avoid Touching Your Face: Try not to touch your face, especially if your hands aren’t clean.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Boost your immune system with these tips:

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout your cruise.

Eat Nutritious Foods: Enjoy fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Get Enough Sleep: Maintain a regular sleep schedule to help your body recover.

Exercise: Use the gym or fitness classes to strengthen your immune system.

Be Mindful of Social Interactions

To avoid illness on your cruise, consider the following:

Limit Close Contact: If someone shows signs of illness, maintain distance when possible.

Avoid Group Activities if Unwell: Refrain from participating in group events if you feel sick to prevent spreading illness to others.

Know the Cruise Line’s Health Protocols

Familiarize yourself with your cruise line’s health and safety protocols:

Pre-Embarkation Screening: Some cruise lines conduct health screenings, including temperature checks.

Onboard Medical Facilities: Cruise ships often have doctors and nurses available for emergencies.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Protocols: Stay informed about the ship’s cleaning measures.

Consider Travel Insurance

Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical treatment or trip cancellations due to illness.

By taking proactive steps to safeguard your health, you can enjoy everything your cruise offers. Pack your bags, bring hand sanitizer, and have a wonderful cruise!

by Julie Bouchner October 3, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Explora Journeys has launched an exclusive exhibition of Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s marine photography, titled Marine Encounters, aboard EXPLORA II. Located in the Galleria d’Arte, the exhibition features 28 limited-edition photographs showcasing marine life.

Prince Hussain Aga Khan gifted this collection to the MSC Foundation, where it will be on display for six months, highlighting a shared commitment to environmental conservation.

Explora Journeys President Anna Nash, MSC Foundation Executive Director Daniela Picco, and Prince Hussain Aga Khan officially opened the exhibition on September 14. Proceeds from sales will support the MSC Foundation’s marine conservation efforts.

This unveiling occurred during the Naming Ceremony for EXPLORA II, the second ship in MSC Group’s fleet. She embarked on her maiden voyage on September 16, traveling from Civitavecchia, Italy, to Spain, Sicily, and Malta, with the exhibition available for guests for six months.

“I’m very grateful to be showing my work in this beautiful space on board Explora II. My mission is to highlight the diversity, beauty, and behavior of marine life to inspire people to appreciate and care for our oceans,” said Prince Hussain Aga Khan, Founder of Focused on Nature. “I also aim to raise awareness about the decline of marine ecosystems and encourage changes in individual behavior.”

The collaboration links Explora guests with ocean education advocates through Prince Hussain’s art. Guests can support scholarships at the University of The Bahamas, enhancing the Foundation’s contributions to marine science education.

Anna Nash stated, “For over 30 years, Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s photography has deepened our appreciation for nature and our relationship with natural resources. Our partnership with the MSC Foundation and Focused on Nature represents a united vision for environmental awareness and education. This inaugural collaboration with Explora Journeys aims to inspire action in preserving marine life and advancing marine science.”

Marine Encounters takes cruise guests from coral reefs to the deep ocean, emphasizing coral protection. It culminates at the MSC Foundation Area, dedicated to environmental education. EXPLORA II guests can support global initiatives by purchasing a limited-edition print by Prince Hussain Aga Khan, which directly funds a semester scholarship for a marine science student at the University of The Bahamas.

“We are honored to partner with Prince Hussain Aga Khan to showcase his photography on Explora II. This exhibition offers cruise guests a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of our oceans through art while drawing inspiration from Prince Hussain’s dedication to marine conservation,” said Daniela Picco, Executive Director of the MSC Foundation. “By allowing guests to support our shared cause, we are also connecting with the University of The Bahamas to support education for the next generation of ocean champions.”

Discover Luxury and Adventure Aboard Le Ponant

by Bill Panoff October 3, 2024
written by Bill Panoff

Sailing aboard Le Ponant, the sleek and intimate three-masted sailing yacht, is a perfect mix of luxury and adventure for first-time cruisers. With only a handful of passengers, the atmosphere feels exclusive, while the attentive crew ensures that every moment is enjoyable. From the gourmet meals inspired by local cuisine to comfortable amenities in your stateroom, every detail is designed for comfort.

One of the highlights of my experience aboard Le Ponant, the small, elegant flagship of the PONANT fleet, was the close connection to nature. Whether lounging on the sun deck or kayaking in hidden bays, the ocean is always within reach and the ship, propelled by wind, electric batteries, and diesel, runs nearly silently. Le Ponant explores secret coves and unique locations that larger ships can’t access, making each stop an adventure.

Photo: Bill Panoff

During excursions to coastal villages, you’ll also get a taste of local life, where markets offer fresh produce and enticing local flavors. Knowledgeable guides provide useful information about the local culture and history.

Another highlight of my trip was the way we spent evenings on board. As the sun set, we enjoyed outdoor dinners under the stars, accompanied by music and the sound of waves. This relaxing atmosphere was perfect for bonding with fellow travelers.

Le Ponant struck the perfect balance between adventure and comfort. Whether enjoying a spa session, gazing up at the wind-filled sails, or participating in activities with local artisans, each moment offered enjoyment and discovery.

Le Ponant offers an exceptional introduction for anyone new to cruising (and is bound to surprise old hands) with the luxuries afforded by its intimate size and peaceful ambience. Come see for yourself!

Romance Railway

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 2, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Editor’s Note: This story won a first-place writing award for Terri Colby, who was named the 2024 Mark Twain Travel Journalist of the Year by the MTJA.

Three musicians take the stage in Andalusia’s capital city of Seville. Their haunting voices, hand claps, and guitar chords are just a small taste. When the dancers emerge — a woman in a flowy, ruffled dress and a man in a tailored suit — the vocals and yearning guitar merge with the percussive beats of the dancers’ shoes hitting the wooden floor.

As the ruffles swirl in the air, the musical notes and rhythmic percussion of feet and hands build to an intensity that envelops both the audience and the performers in the flamenco spotlight.

When you have a stage-side seat in Seville, it’s impossible not to be drawn in to the passion of flamenco, named in 2010 by UNESCO to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

A trip to the large, southwestern region of Andalusia delivers much of what Spain is known for around the world: flamenco, distinctive gastronomy, bullfighting, seaside resorts, and magnificent art and historic architecture that blend Christian and Muslim influences.

A Region of Rails

Spain’s extensive train system, with both regular and high-speed routes, means you can get to much of Andalusia’s most popular and walkable cities without a car. We used the high-speed AVE trains for visiting Córdoba and Seville. But rail lines can deliver you to other well-known spots like Málaga, Granada, and Cádiz.

My husband and I stepped onto an AVE train after an overnight flight from the U.S. to Madrid. The transfer from the airport to the train was simple. Our plan was to ride the train, first to Córdoba (about 250 miles from Madrid) and then on to Seville days later, along the same line. We were ensconced in our hotel in Córdoba by early afternoon.

Our 2-night stay in Córdoba was way too short, but we spent our time there thrilling to its patio gardens and the famed Mezquita, or Mosque Cathedral, two things that make Córdoba different from anywhere else in the world.

From ancient times, buildings in Córdoba were constructed with central courtyards to help keep residents cool in the hot, dry climate. Families filled the spaces with fountains and flowers. In 1918, the city began an annual contest to choose the best patio. The contest is in early May, but the patios are so popular that you can see them at other times of the year, too.

We visited in April and it was a delight to explore the courtyards, each with a specific design. On a warm spring morning, a walk through Córdoba’s patios feeds the senses with extravagantly colored blossoms, profuse green plantings, and the more subtle hints of jasmine, citrus, and other floral scents coloring the air. You can hear water gurgling in fountains and footsteps crossing stone streets.

The patio gardens are remarkable, but Córdoba’s outstanding Mosque Cathedral is like no other place.

According to tradition an ancient Christian church was the first house of worship on the site in Córdoba’s old town. After the growing Muslim empire conquered southern Spain in the 8th century, Córdoba’s new rulers built a grand mosque and expanded it over the following centuries, including the addition of a soaring minaret.

When Christian forces of Castile recaptured the city in 1236, the new rulers built a Renaissance-style cathedral inside the mosque. Visitors can pass under its terracotta and white striped arches, typical of Islamic design, and walk a few feet to see the cathedral, with Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque flourishes.

Next stop, Seville: less than an hour by AVE train from Córdoba.

Sunshine in Seville

Seville is a busy, walkable city with a warm Mediterranean climate, lively dining options and history and culture on full display.

One of our favorite stops in Seville is one of its most popular. The Plaza de España in the Parque de María Luisa is a huge open space flanked by…

All Hands to the Past

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 1, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Have you ever wondered if time travel is possible? After an 8-day voyage aboard a century-old wooden trawler, I think it just might be. Just standing and looking up at the billowing red sails, I feel connected to the past sailors, in a way I hadn’t imagined. I had embarked at Dunstaffnage Marina near Oban to join eight strangers to sail around the West Coast of Scotland aboard a boat built in 1924.

Provident is one of only six Brixham trawlers on the U.K. Register of National Historic Fleet and was one of the last fishing boats built to be powered by sail. After her fishing career ended, she was bought by an American, Captain R H Lagarde, and converted into a yacht. She then became a training vessel for Island Sailing Club and then Trinity Sailing Foundation back in the U.K., showing novice sailors the ropes. Provident Sailing now runs voyages of discovery, mainly off the West Coast of Scotland, taking small groups of visitors on yacht-based expeditions — in our case, visiting the Gulf of Corryvreckan whirlpool, and the Islands of Mull, Jura, Gigha, Islay, Lismore, and the Garvellachs, before ending the voyage in Fort William.

A Sailor’s Life

The onboard berths have been cleverly converted out of the former fish hold, which also features an open-plan dining saloon with a galley. There is a mixture of nationalities and sailing abilities among the other guests; some of them have holidayed aboard historic ships before and others like me are complete novices. The canvas sails are raised by hauling ropes rhythmically, called “sweating” and gathering slack, called “tailing.” It is exhilarating to scud across the waves, hair flying, powered by wind. You can join in as much or as little as you want or you can sit back and watch, but once you pluck up the courage to get involved, you’ll be addicted.

We are in the safe hands of owners Steve Jones and his wife Morag Slesser, aided by other crew members. Gradually, by repetition, sailing starts to make sense. All this activity works up an appetite, so fortunately, Morag rustles up delicious feasts from the tiny galley kitchen. The bunks are comfortable but snug, and although it feels a bit strange on the first night to be bunking up with someone you have just met, that quickly fades as you’re gently rocked to sleep by the waves lapping on the hull.

Each day feels like the start of an adventure. One of our number, Samatha Barrett from Virginia came to Scotland to visit the land of her forefathers. What better way to visit Jura and learn how to sail the way it would have been done in the past aboard a wooden boat? Her family tree is filled with familiar surnames; Buie, Burns, Cunningham, and McLellan. She explains, “I was raised by my family with a strong appreciation for our Scottish heritage. My aunt and I have been researching them since I was 12.” They discovered the Buies originated from Jura and settled in eastern North Carolina in the early 1700s. She explains, “There is even a place in North Carolina called Buies Creek, and south of that are Cumberland, Robeson, and Scotland Counties where the majority of my ancestors lived. My fifth great-grandmother was a Buie who was born in 1807 in Robeson County, North Carolina. At some point, her family moved to South Carolina, where she married another Scot that came from either Islay or Jura.”

Walking the Shore

Beneath the watchful gaze of the Paps of Jura, we waved goodbye as Provident weighed anchor and sailed away. We had not been abandoned, instead dropped ashore in Lowlandman’s Bay on Jura to rejoin the boat having walked along bramble-lined lanes to the village of Craighouse. On the way, we happened upon an idyllic bay called Corran Sands — unbelievably, the location for departing Scots emigrants leaving for a new life in the States and a spine-tingling coincidence for Samantha.

Another day, we found ourselves under…

Sound, Light, and Beauty

by Lola Méndez September 30, 2024
written by Lola Méndez

All around the globe, light brings awe and wonder to crowds through visual storytelling. The modern tradition of son et lumière shows started in France when Paul Robert-Houdin created a “sound and light” show in 1952 at the Château de Chambord. The performance used music and narration while colored lights were projected onto the 16th-century palace. Digital innovations have since improved the quality of light shows, which have spread in popularity around the globe, especially at iconic historic sites. With 3-D video mapping, moving images are projected onto historic structures and onto fountains that come to life with technicolored displays of light glowing on jets of water. Flocks of drones are used to illuminate the sky without the environmental harm of fireworks.

Many of these luminescence experiences are educational and tell the destination’s story through images and light. Here are some of the best light shows to experience around the world.

Circuito Mágico del Agua, Lima, Peru

Located in the open-air Parque de la Reserva, the Circuito Mágico del Agua is a series of 13 dazzling illuminated fountains that made the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest water-fountain complex in a public park. The water used for the fountains is recycled and there are also installations within the park that cover water-related issues. Some of the fountains are interactive and encourage child-like joy with experiences such as walking through a tunnel of rainbow-hued water.

The nightly light show takes place on the 130-yard-long Fuente de la Fantasía. The fountain’s water is used as a screen for a choreographed show of water, music, and video mapping, including images and sounds of cultural importance in Peru, such as the country’s strife with Spanish colonizers and the indigenous heroes who tried to protect their land.

Serefiye Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey

The 1,600-year-old cistern is a grand spectacle to see in its own right, as the ancient structure was a water-storage facility in which most of the water was reserved for bathhouses. The Serefiye Cistern is one the oldest buildings in the world to undergo 360-degree 3D video mapping and was the first museum in Turkey to be brought to life with an audiovisual show. The mesmerizing light display intersects art and technology by using projection mapping and a light display to bring the cistern’s walls and 32 columns to life with the stories of Turkey’s history projected onto the historic structure.

Font Màgica de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona’s biggest ornamental fountain, Font Màgica de Montjuïc (meaning “the Magic Fountain”), was built for .…

Essential Tips for the Week Before Your Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 30, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The week before your cruise is the perfect time to organize everything and get ready to set sail. Here are the top five tips for preparing effectively to help you make the most of your cruise experience.

Confirm Your Travel Documents

Before packing, ensure that all your travel documents are in order. Double-check your passport’s validity (it should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date), gather your cruise tickets, and ensure you have any necessary visas. Having everything ready will save you from stress at the last minute.

Create a Packing List

Organize your list by categories such as clothing, toiletries, and electronics. Factor in the anticipated weather and pack accordingly. Don’t forget essentials like medications, a small first aid kit, and chargers. Cross items off as you go to stay organized.

Shop for Essentials

Use this week to grab any last-minute necessities. Stock up on sunscreen, insect repellent, and snacks for your excursions. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Having these essentials on hand makes your trip more enjoyable.

Organize Travel Arrangements

Verify your transportation plans to the port. If you’re flying, confirm your flight schedule and any airport transfers. If you’re driving, understand parking options. Arriving a day early can help you avoid any travel-related stress.

Check-In and Review Procedures

Most cruise lines allow online check-in. Take advantage of this to save time at the port. Familiarize yourself with boarding procedures and any current health and safety protocols. Knowing what to expect will make your arrival smooth and hassle-free.

With your preparations in order, you’ll be ready to kick back, relax, and embark on a journey filled with adventure and beautiful destinations. Bon voyage!

The Benefits of an Unplugged Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 27, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Embarking on a cruise is an exciting adventure, and choosing to disconnect from WiFi can significantly enhance your experience. Unplugging from the digital world offers several valuable benefits. Here are some key advantages of embracing disconnection during your cruise:

Embrace the Moment

By forgoing WiFi, you allow yourself to be fully present. You can enjoy the ocean views, sunrises, and sunsets without distractions. Without notifications pulling you away, you can enjoy your meals, listen to the sounds of the sea, and make the most of your voyage.

Deepen Connections

An unplugged cruise fosters genuine interactions with fellow travelers and crew. Without screens, you can engage in meaningful conversations, share stories, and connect on a deeper level. Whether chatting by the pool or bonding over excursions, these connections can lead to lasting friendships and cherished memories.

Rediscover Hobbies

An unplugged cruise offers the chance to focus on activities you enjoy. Whether reading a book, journaling your thoughts, or painting the scenery, you can rediscover your passions and explore new hobbies without distraction.

Explore New Destinations

Going WiFi-free allows you to engage with the destinations you visit fully. Without checking emails or social media, you can immerse yourself in local experiences, explore vibrant markets, savor local cuisine, and participate in guided tours, all while soaking in the culture of each port.

Recharge and Reflect

An unplugged cruise encourages relaxation and self-reflection. Without constant connectivity, you can take time for introspection and mindfulness. Use this opportunity to meditate, practice gratitude, or appreciate your surroundings, refreshing your mind and spirit for the journey ahead.

Next time you plan a cruise, consider embracing the power of disconnection—great adventures and unforgettable memories await!

Virgin Thrills Include “Work From Helm,” Cruise-Ship Kitesurfing

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 26, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Virgin Voyages is looking ahead to next summer with the return of Summer Season Passes for 2025, following a sell-out of the 2024 passes in just 48 hours. Virgin Group founder Richard Branson dreamed up the month-long adventure at sea as a way to allows travelers to “work from helm,” keeping up with the grind remotely while cruising across Europe and the Caribbean. The offering is part of a broader trend toward extended cruises, driven by growing interest in remote work and longer stays at sea.

The Summer Season Pass offers WFH perks like high-speed Starlink Pro Wi-Fi as well as specialty coffee, wash-and-fold laundry services, early access to dining, onboard support, and limited access to exclusive areas like Richard’s Rooftop. There’s also a welcome glass of productivity-boosting bubbles to start the voyage.

“This month-long adventure at sea is the definition of work-life balance, allowing travelers to keep up with projects and deadlines, all while exploring incredible ports across Europe and the Caribbean,” says Virgin Voyages spokesperson Michelle George.

The 2025 program reflects the cruise industry’s shift toward attracting younger professionals and digital nomads able to work from anywhere.

Prices start at $14,999 per cabin.

For a slightly more intense Virgin Voyages thrill, Red Bull kitesurfer Tom Bridges successfully completed a high-profile stunt, leaping from Resilient Lady’s Deck 16, approximately 129 feet above the harbor of Delos, Greece.

“It was probably the most terrifying thing I’ve done with a kite,” says Bridge. “We’d been on the ship to recce three times and had lots of looks over the edge. And every time we’ve gone ‘Oh God, it’s high, isn’t it?’ Then, honestly, when I had the kite in my hands, and I put my feet in the straps, I didn’t look down. It was just ‘go.’ It just carried me, and next minute we’re on the water.”

He estimated his flight covered between 700 and 900 feet before he landed in the water, witnessed by passengers and crew aboard the ship.

Virgin Group founder Branson praised the achievement, calling it “an epic display of skill and nerve.”

It wasn’t the first time Branson and Bridges have crossed kite-harnesses.

In 2013, Branson and hundreds of fellow kitesurfers broke a Guinness World Record for the largest parade of kitesurfers to complete a one-mile course. Bridges, just 12 years old at the time, was the youngest rider on the attempt.

September Savings

Virgin Voyages is also offering promotional rates on select Caribbean cruises. Travelers can take advantage of a 70-percent discount for a second guest, alongside up to $500 in savings for bookings paid in full. The promotion covers voyages from now through August 10, 2026.

“As fellow cruise fans, I’ve been following the Hackers for years, and have been delighted at Simon’s progress as a media creator — a writer, director, and producer,” says Porthole Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff. “For an indie film, NOTICE TO QUIT punches above its weight when it comes to entertainment value, especially if you love the spirit of New York City and its people.”

DON JOHNSON STARS IN “NEW LOVE BOAT” SERIES DOCTOR ODYSSEY

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 26, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruise-ship medical drama picks up where Julie, Isaac, and Captain Stubing left off.

A brand-new show with a familiar setting launches on September 26, as Miami Vice star Don Johnson joins Fringe and Dawson’s Creek alum Joshua Jackson and Hamilton star Phillipa Soo in a medical procedural aboard a luxury cruise ship.

Showrunner Ryan Murphy, the producer behind 9-1-1, American Horror Story, and Glee, helms the ABC/Hulu drama, which pits its all-star cast against a steady stream of health situations, extreme weather, and interpersonal entanglements miles from shore.

“I guess you can break the Ryan Murphy universe into the outrageous side and the scary side — and we are very much on the outrageous side,” Jackson said in a recent interview. “So, it’s a show built for fun to be enjoyed. It’s gonna look beautiful.”

CREDIT: ABC.Jackson plays Dr. Max Bankman, a well-meaning medical professional who decides to take to the sea after a near-death COVID-19 experience. Johnson plays the gruff, seen-it-all Captain Robert Masse , while Soo takes on the role of the ship’s Nurse Avery Morgan who becomes a love interest of Bankman’s. Sean Teale (Reign, The Gifted) fills out the medical staff as smolderingly handsome Nurse Tristan Silva.

“Ryan Murphy has created a world on this ship that is nothing short of opulent, and luxurious, and rich,” says Johnson, whose work on Miami Vice established the neon world of South Florida as the epitome of 1980s cool.

Says Teale: “Don Johnson is as much of a legend as you expect him to be. He’s funny, very compassionate, and he is very wise.”
Just like the hit show Love Boat, the main cast consists of a committed core of regulars joined by an ever-changing cast of big-name guest stars. Early episodes have John Stamos and Kelsea Ballerini in guest spots, with upcoming turns by Shania Twain, Gina Gershon, and Chord Overstreet.

“It’s more like a ’60s or ’70s romantic comedy than it is a modern procedural,” Jackson told Toronto Star. “There’s the little family of the medical team and the larger family of the people who work on the boat, and every week we have a new group of people who we are there to service and entertain and, in our case, keep alive or healthy.”
Watch a trailer here:

The show will air on ABC on Thursday evenings at 9 p.m. Eastern and be available the day after on Hulu.

Looking forward to the new show? Seen the debut episode? Let us know what you think in the comments!
