MSC Armonia gets bigger
MSC Cruises this week began the process of physically enlarging its 1,556-passenger MSC Armonia — extending the length of the ship by nearly 80 feet.
To do this, workers at the Fincantieri shipyard in the Sicilian city of Palermo actually separated the ship’s bow from its stern to add a a new, prefabricated, 79-foot middle section. The new space will allow for the addition of 200 staterooms and new amenities including expanded kids’ play areas and a new splash park with water features including spray cannons.
MSC Armonia, which redeploys in November, is the first of four ships in the fleet slated for overhaul as part of MSC’s $273 million Renaissance program, which also includes safety and environmental upgrades. MSC Lirica, MSC Sinfonia, and MSC Opera will similarly grow.
