Tell someone you’re going on a cruise and they might joke about the 10 pounds you’ll gain. Maybe that was true back in the day (heck, it’s still true for some of us!), but we also know that a seagoing holiday also offers the time and opportunity for self-improvement.
Sure, there are fabulous fitness centers, lavish spas, water aerobics classes in the pool, and jogging tracks. But today’s cruises go far beyond that, giving you the chance to try a wide variety of cutting-edge treatments, trendy nutrition philosophies, and the latest workout programs.
Here is just a sampling of the self-improvement options available on today’s cruise ships. Try them, and your friends might wonder how you managed to shave off 10 pounds (or 10 years!) in one week.

Long credited with using needles to alleviate pain and stress, the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture is now offered by a number of cruise lines. Luxury line Silversea Cruises, for example, offers the alternative therapy in The Spa on Silver Spirit, saying it might ease the symptoms of insomnia and anxiety and even help people quit smoking and overeating. The 30- to 45-minute sessions are offered for $173 for one or $750 for five. In Norwegian Cruise Line’s Mandara Spas, the cost is $150 for the first….
