The Love Boat: Where Are They Now?

America’s best-loved TV cruisers have sailed on to sunnier — and surprising — destinations

More than 35 years ago, the cast of The Love Boat set sail on American television, delighting viewers with tales of romance and hijinks on the high seas. From 1977 to 1987, the cruise ship Pacific Princess served as a backdrop for one of the most popular shows in TV history, both in the United States and in dozens of countries around the world. Each week, its motley crew of characters — including Captain Stubing, Gopher, Isaac, Doc and Julie — embarked on an “exciting and new” voyage with a boatload of lovesick passengers.

Gavin MacLeod

The first time Gavin MacLeod set foot aboard a cruise ship — when he was filming the pilot for The Love Boat — he was hooked. And even after Captain Merrill Stubing hung up his hat, Gavin continued to stay part of the Princess Cruises family. He’s been the company’s spokesperson since 1986.

“I think cruising has extended my knowledge of the world”, he tells Porthole Cruise Magazine. “Even with going on location when filming movies, I think I’ve seen more places because of cruising, and I think it has changed my observations of life.”

MacLeod, 82, has had bit roles over the past few years in shows such as That ’70s Show and The Suite Life on Deck. He also makes appearances at the McCallum Theatre near his home in Rancho Mirage, California, where he lives with his wife of nearly 40 years, Patti….
