When I finally arrived in South Africa, I had to ask myself, “What took so long?” With more and more cruise ships making their way here, do yourself a favor and take the opportunity to visit this fascinating country. Here are five must-do moments to get a great introduction to the country’s million square miles.
Cape Town
Dubbed the Mother City, Cape Town began as a way station for ships sailing the trading lanes between Europe and Asia. Over the years, it has developed into a rich trading post, and the harbor where cruise ships dock has been renovated and vastly expanded into the fashionable Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a beehive of urban living.
This vibrant, modern, stylish, complex city has it all — history at every turn; a gorgeous setting under towering mountains that fall to the sea; a lively art scene; world-class wine and cuisine; a fun, bustling nightlife; an annual jazz festival; African crafts, diamonds, jewelry by design, flea markets, and green markets; splendid beaches and a multitude of sports; the oldest cathedral in Southern Africa; “Museum Mile,” which is a pedestrian avenue with some of South Africa’s finest museums and monuments; whale watching, shark encounters, and penguins at Boulders Beach; parks and gardens; good transportation — and, it’s affordable….
