Meet the New World’s Largest Cruise Ship

The largest cruise ship in the world will debut in April 2016 as Harmony of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International officials announced.

The 5,479-passenger, 227,000-ton ship, like its slightly smaller sister ships Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, will have seven distinct neighborhoods including a Central Park and Boardwalk with carousel.

There will be new stuff, including three multi-story waterslides located 10 decks above Central Park – one of the slides a “champagne bowl” that swirls guests around as they get near the end of the ride.

“We are orchestrating a medley of new exciting concepts with the best Royal Caribbean innovations to strike the perfect chord for adventurous vacationers. That is why we are calling our third Oasis-class ship Harmony of the Seas,” said Michael Bayley, the line’s president and CEO.

A Bionic Bar manned by robot bartenders, a much talked-about feature on last year’s Quantum of the Seas (and soon to debut on sister ship Anthem of the Seas), will reappear on Harmony, as will smart wristbands replacing room cards.

Staterooms on Harmony of the Seas will be larger than on Oasis and Allure, officials said. Interior cabins will be outfitted with Virtual Balconies and the ship will also have studio cabins for solo travelers. Suite guests will have access to a special lounge and private suites-only restaurant, Coastal Kitchen (the same as on Quantum) as well as a private sun deck.

Other new stuff will include a classic game arcade and new climbing area, while cool stuff we’ve seen before will include a Starbucks café – all on the Boardwalk.

The ship will have Dynamic Dining (as introduced on Quantum), meaning a choice of various complimentary and fee-based restaurants. But this time, those who want a “Classic” experience can choose early or late seating and rotate among the complimentary venues, with the same assigned waiter each evening. New specialty restaurant concepts will include a teppanyaki menu at Izumi.

Harmony of the Seas is under construction at the STX shipyard in France.
