Porthole Cruise News Briefs — Jan. 30, 2015

• Ornithology, wine, marine biology, and beer are among topics for theme cruises on Un-Cruise Adventures’ small ships this year. The theme sailings are on Sea of Cortez (birding), Columbia & Snake River (American history, wine, music), Coastal Washington/British Columbia (beer, birding), and Alaska (photography, marine biology) itineraries.
• Carnival Corp. entered a deal with gaming supplier Scientific Games to launch a new mobile gaming platform across its cruise brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Passengers will be able to play a range of poker, slot, and table games while in international waters. The iGaming service is already live on Carnival Breeze and Carnival Freedom and is soon to launch on Regal Princess.
• MSC Cruises is out with a cool mobile app that, among other things, lets you see 360-degree virtual ship tours, actual staterooms, and live webcam feeds from each ship. You can also travel the fleet in real time around the globe.
• Carnival Corp. held a press conference in China to announce plans to explore port and destination development as well as shipbuilding with the goal of launching “China’s first world-class domestic brand.” Carnival’s partner in exploration is China Merchants Group, China’s oldest state enterprise (founded in 1872).
