As the summer golf season starts to wind down, Atlas Ocean Voyages is inviting golfers of all ability levels to take the Caribbean golf cruise vacation of a lifetime! Today, the cruise line announced a new, special Caribbean voyage aboard World Navigator with calls on some of the region’s best golf islands.

Leaving from Barbados on October 19, 2021, World Navigator will call on Anguilla, St. Barts, St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. World-class Caribbean golf courses found on those islands include Royal St. Kitts Golf Club, Four Seasons Resort Nevis, Cedar Valley Golf Club, Sandals St. Lucia Golf & Country Club, and the private-island Canouan Estate.

“We have created an enviable program that will provide golfers the opportunity to play multiple, world-class courses in some of the Caribbean’s most exclusive and elegant destinations,” said Alberto Aliberti, President of Atlas Ocean Voyages. “And World Navigator’s new elite Caribbean voyage is also a convenient opportunity for travelers to experience Atlas Ocean Voyages and our All Inclusive All The Way at a great value and in a region that is closer to home.”

Golfing in the Caribbean

Golfing in the Caribbean isn’t like your local country club. These courses have spectacular ocean views, a warm breeze and of course, plenty of sand traps to make each round a unique challenge. Canounan Estate and Royal St. Kitts are frequently named to lists of the regions top courses thanks to challenging topography and a rich history.

The best part about the Caribbean golf cruise is the deal Atlas Ocean Voyage is offering along with it. The Caribbean Golfing Tour from Atlas Ocean Voyages starts at $3,240 per guest, that’s a savings of 40% on the voyage.

If you’re sick of looking for your balls in the woods, we’re pretty sure it’s easier to find them on the beach!

Your Guide to the New Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Hotel

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 14, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Since Disney opened up their new Star Wars-themed Galaxy’s Edge area inside their parks in California and Florida, the buzz hasn’t stopped and it doesn’t appear the popularity will fade any time soon as Disney is in the process of building a Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Hotel at both parks. We still have a little longer to wait until the hotel opens, but the details coming out sound out-of-this-world!

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Hotel

Set to open in 2022, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser was delayed due to COVID, but construction crew have been hard at work to get the projects done by the new opening date. What makes the hotel unique is that a guest’s entire stay is part of the storyline. The all-inclusive (we’ll get to what that means in a second) resort puts guests at the center of the action of a two-night adventure.

From the moment guests arrive at the hotel, they’re thrust into the world of Star Wars including taking a ‘launch pod’ into space with the windows projecting the journey along the way. Guests then arrive at Halcyon, the name of the ‘space ship’ where they are staying. While on board, the Star Wars characters, both familiar and not, make the story come alive through interactions with guests.

One of the highlights of the ship is the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, a venue serving breakfast and lunch before transforming into a lavish dinner club with multi-course meals with a space-themed twist. The club features special musical acts by a mystery performer Disney is calling a “galactic superstar’.

How Much Does Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Cost?

Visitors to Disney parks understand they’re paying a premium for the experience, but the new Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel takes things to a whole new level when it comes to price. A four-person cabin with three adults and a child breaks down to $5,999 for the total cost of the voyage. The more people you have, the better the deal – a 2-person cabin rounds out to $4,809 in total according to the sample rates found on the website. Tickets for just Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge park start at $109 per person.

RELATED: TikTok User Shows Just How Empty Disney Dream Is

The package is all-inclusive, meaning the room accommodations, meals excluding alcoholic beverages, and admission to Disney’s Hollywood Studios is part of the deal. Guests also get one of Disney’s MagicBands that allows for access to the parks and guest rooms as well as food, drink and merchandise charges.

When you consider the immersive nature of the experience and what’s included, the price doesn’t seem quite so high, but it’s still a major expense for most people. All things considered, any family vacation to a Disney theme park is going to run up a bill, but the hefty price tag for just two-nights at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser could have people sticking to the regular park experience.

Future Cruising Aboard the Sustainable Catamarans of Sunreef Yachts

by Grant Balfour September 14, 2021
written by Grant Balfour

We’ve all learned a little about different ways of doing things lately. Individual attention. Bespoke experiences. Fresh air with a small group of friends. That’s what the future of cruising could look like aboard the sustainable catamarans of Sunreef Yachts.

This luxury shipbuilder has taken the small-ship experience of lines like UnCruise Adventures, Saga Cruises, and SeaDream, and combined it with the cutting-edge vision of ecological leaders like Hurtigruten and innovators like Virgin Voyages to create what they call “advanced solutions for sustainable cruising.”

Their vision for the future consists of two kinds of catamaran: the Power Eco Yacht and the Sailing Eco Yacht. Both are customizable to take into account every cruiser’s needs, and both are designed to be sleek, quiet, and kind to the air, sea, and land. The Power Eco Yacht combines hi-tech green propulsion with exceptional comfort. The Sailing Eco Yacht adds top quality recyclable sails in addition to advanced electric engines powered by ultralight, custom-engineered battery banks which are recharged by in-house produced solar panels.

While most cruise ships are welded together from massive sheets of steel, Sunreef ships use carbon fiber as an ultra-light, ultra-strong building material. The Sunreef 60 Eco Yacht, one of the company’s smaller sailing models, has a carbon fiber mast, boom, and Bimini top with in-built curved solar panels to generate electricity. The railings are made of strong, lightweight titanium. But the sailing ship also uses Earth-friendly sustainable materials, like floors made of reclaimed teak, countertops made of compressed paper, and even recycled sails for propulsion.

Cruising Returned to Port of Baltimore Over the Weekend

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 13, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Over the weekend, Carnival Cruise Line became the first line to set sail from Port of Baltimore since the COVID-19 pandemic first began in March 2020. Carnival Pride embarked from port yesterday on a seven-day cruise to The Bahamas with calls on Nassau, Freeport and Carnival’s private island Half Moon Cay.

Before the ship left, a “Back to Fun” event was held in the terminal during which Carnival President Christine Duffy, Carnival Pride Captain Maurizio Ruggiero and Port of Baltimore Executive Director William P. Doyle cut the ceremonial ribbon and officially welcomed the first guests on board.

“We’re thrilled to be back in Baltimore, providing our guests with the relaxing vacation they’ve been so patiently waiting for but also supporting the local economy and offering  our crew members an opportunity to support their families back home,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.  “Baltimore has been a wonderful partner for more than a decade and we are delighted to get Back to Fun in this key market which serves hundreds of thousands of guests in the Northeast and along the Atlantic Coast.”

“What a great day for the Port of Baltimore!” said Port of Baltimore Executive Director William P. Doyle. “We have waited a long time to welcome back the Carnival Pride to Charm City. Baltimore’s Cruise Maryland is terrific — our cruise terminal is directly off Interstate 95 and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is only 15 minutes away.  The cruise terminal sits alongside Baltimore’s world famous Inner Harbor, as well as Federal Hill, Fort McHenry, and Fells Point.  There’s plenty of sightseeing, dining, and shopping options.  So cruise from Baltimore, enjoy our great city, and sail to Carnival Cruise Line launched the first year-round cruise program from Baltimore in 2009 and since then has carried well over one million guests, making Carnival the number one cruise operator from the port.”

Carnival Legend Coming to Baltimore

Carnival Pride is scheduled to sail from Port of Baltimore until November when the ship heads South to embark on cruises from Port of Tampa Bay. Carnival Legend will then take its place cruising from Baltimore.

Carnival is offering a number of itineraries from Baltimore including six- and seven-day sailings to Bermuda and The Bahamas, eight-day voyages to Canada/New England and the Caribbean, and 14-day sailings to the Panama Canal and the southern Caribbean.

France Bars Unvaccinated Americans from Visiting

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 10, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

A major tourist destination for Americans is now closed to those unvaccinated against COVID-19. Yesterday, France became the latest European country, and by far the most significant, to close their doors to anyone who hasn’t been fully vaccinated against the virus.

The news from France followed the news recently that Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands had also begun requiring proof of vaccination for U.S. citizens prior to entry. While much of Europe opened their borders over the summer to tourists, the rise in COVID-19 cases in America, particularly the Delta variant, over the past few weeks is causing countries to rethink their reopening strategy.

France moved the United States and Israel from their Green list to their Orange list, meaning unvaccinated travelers must have an essential reason for traveling and they must also get a negative PCR test before travel and must quarantine for seven days after arrival. Those who are vaccinated will see no restrictions upon entry.

Where Can Americans Travel in Europe?

Sweden took even more drastic action, banning anyone arriving from the United States regardless of their vaccination status. The European Union even voted to remove the United States from their list of “safe” countries thanks to over 75 new COVID-19 cases each day per 100,000 people over the previous two weeks.

However, it’s up to each member state to decide the rules when it comes to Americans. Greece, for example, is remaining open for tourism regardless of vaccination status. All that’s needed to enter Greece is a negative PCR test and a passenger locator form filled out prior to travel. Those who are fully vaccinated do not need a negative PCR test to enter Greece. Remember, a negative PCR test is required for reentry to the United States.

Do you have a trip to Europe planned in the future? Let us know in the comments below!

Falling into Paradise; Grenada’s Spectacular Waterfalls

by Richard Varr September 10, 2021
written by Richard Varr
Torrents tumble down rocky outposts sheltered by a leafy rainforest canopy, cascading with a sparkling white sheen into a cooling pool below — no doubt a picturesque Caribbean paradise.
Editor’s Note: This story from our Sep/Oct 2021 issue won Richard Varr a first-place award in the SATW Central States international stories competition.
On Grenada, the island’s many scenic waterfalls with their swooshing downpours and scintillating mists are often a short drive or a hike away — what you might call finding moments in paradise tucked within a verdant natural wonderland.
“You just can’t wait to put down your bag or walking stick and jump in the water right away. That’s how it makes you feel when you see them for the first time,” asserts Roger Augustine, destination experience officer with the Grenada Tourism Authority. “You are in awe as to how beautiful the waterfall and surrounding landscape look — everything is so lush and the water is so clear.” Grenada is often called the “Isle of Spice” for its hillsides and farms with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger crops. Yet a deeper look within its rainforests reveals its waterfalls — natural wonders, often hidden gems — that have become popular to visitors. Created by the island’s mountainous landscape and abundant rainfall, some of the spewing cataracts are easy to get to, but others can only be reached by hiking — sometimes strenuous treks up steep and muddy trails.  When is the best time to see them? Since the island’s rainy season lasts from June through December, waterfalls are often flowing in their full glory in January but begin to taper off by mid February during the January-to-May dry season.

CDC Upgrades Jamaica to “Level 4: Very High” Travel Risk

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 8, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Another popular Caribbean island has found itself on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s list of places to avoid due to rising COVID-19 cases. Jamaica was added to the CDC’s Level 4 Travel Advisory list meaning people should avoid travel to the island. Those who must travel to Jamaica are urged to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Several other Caribbean islands are already at Level 4 including the Bahamas, St. Maarten, Dominica and Aruba.

Just last week, both Puerto Rico and St. Lucia also found themselves added to the Level 4 list after reaching the threshold of over 500 cases per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days. Much like other places around the world, Jamaica has seen a dramatic spike in positive cases since the summer began prompting the CDC to adjust their travel advisory.

The CDC published the following warning on their website:

Fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread COVID-19. However, international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers might be at increased risk for getting and possibly spreading some COVID-19 variants.

What’s the Safest Island in the Caribbean for Travel?

There is one Caribbean island that the CDC has classified as a Level 1: Low Risk country. While other islands in the region opened months ago, the Cayman Islands opted for a slower, phases approach to reopening and as a result, they’ve kept COVID-19 transmission to a minimum. The island has reported just 715 total cases since the pandemic began and only two deaths in that time.

Cayman Island officials hope to have 80% of the population fully vaccinated before fully reopening the island for tourism. Quarantine will not be required for fully vaccinated travelers starting on October 14, 2021. Unvaccinated travelers will be required to complete a 14-day quarantine.

As of now, the plan is to have a full reopening by the end of January 2022.

Windstar Creates Treasure Hunt for a Free Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 7, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Windstar Cruises is in the process of returning their full fleet to service and in honor of cruising’s return, they’ve announced a month-long treasure hunt with the grand prize being a free cruise on board one of the line’s luxury ships. The hunt runs through the end of September and doesn’t require any kind of purchase to participate.

Four of Windstar’s ships are currently active, with the final two scheduled for restart later this Fall.

How Windstar’s Treasure Hunt Works

Participants just need to follow Windstar Cruises on social media where the line will be releasing videos as clues beginning on September 10th. From there, amateur sleuths online must study each video to uncover information on the treasure’s whereabouts. According to Windstar, each of the 11 videos will contain a specific number, letter or symbol which, when combined together on Windstar’s Treasure Hunt page, form a Google Plus code revealing the treasure’s location.

Those who can figure out the treasure’s location will receive $200 in onboard credit for their next sailing and they are entered to win a free cruise on board which they will have the chance to actually find the treasure! If you’re interested in being the one to emerge victorious, make sure you watch the video above from Windstar Cruises which has all the details on how the contest works and even a tip or two on how to win.

Windstar has long been one of the most popular small-ship luxury lines and if you’ve never cruised with them before, you should absolutely see if you can crack the code and find the treasure. We spent a week at sea with Windstar previously so be sure to read all about the experience if you plan on vying for the free cruise!

Alaska Like New with UnCruise Adventures

by John Roberts September 7, 2021
written by John Roberts

For centuries, Alaska has represented a challenge to be conquered by resilient people seeking a new path to blaze forward. Thus, this beautiful and highly sought-after destination also represents the perfect backdrop for the beginning of the comeback story for cruising. UnCruise Adventures, the small-ship leader in Alaska for more than two decades, made a big splash by launching its first sailings in May to mark the first significant step in the reopening of tourism in Alaska.

UnCruise brought six ships, the bulk of its fleet, to Alaska to meet the surging demand for expeditions in this idyllic location. The company had not sailed for more than a year and a half during the pandemic, but had managed to hang on long enough to celebrate a triumphant restart. Passengers were assured of a safe environment on these fully vaccinated cruises (both passengers and crew) that also required pre-cruise negative COVID tests.

My sailing on the 86-passenger Legacy departed from Juneau bound for Sitka with 60 passengers and 30 crew aboard. As is customary for UnCruise, the captain and crew always warn cruisers that the start and end points listed on the program are the only parts of the itinerary that you can really count on. The weather and whims of the whales and other creatures often dictate the course, as the goal is always to provide the most exciting experience and the best opportunities to see humpbacks, orcas, bears, porpoises, river otters, sea lions, moose and mountain goats. So, the ship goes where the animals are spotted.

Well, the weather certainly cooperated. As we departed rainy Juneau, slipping out of the marina and up Gastineau Channel on our way toward Icy Strait and, eventually, Idaho Inlet, the drizzle ceased and the clouds lifted.

Numerous passengers were experiencing both a cruise and Alaska for the first time. What a way to do it!

Walk by any coffee shop in America for the next three months and your nose will be filled with the rich aroma of pumpkin spice. The seasonal delicacy can be found in just about every product on the shelves of your local supermarket from Oreos to cream cheese and everything in between. We even found pumpkin spice flavored Spam!

While pumpkin spice might not go well with everything, there are plenty of treats and products that are fantastic for getting into the spirit of the season. In honor of Fall, we compiled a list of the 10 best pumpkin spice treats to get your vibes going!

1. Organic Pumpkin Spice Coffee

We had to start with perhaps the product that pumpkin spice goes best with, coffee! If you’re the kind of person who can only be lured out of bed by the smell of a fresh pot brewing down the hall, then you’ll love the aroma of pumpkin spice coffee on a crisp Fall morning! Thrive Market has a 100% organic and ethically-sourced pumpkin spice coffee that we love for the taste and their commitment to moral business practices.

2. Native Pumpkin Spice Latte Deodorant

This is one we never thought we’d want, but if you’re crazy about pumpkin spice, why not give it a try? Native Co makes a pumpkin spice latte-scented deodorant stick that’s aluminum-free, baking soda-free and made with clean ingredients. It’s also made for sensitive skin. We love it because it gives that warm cozy feeling in the winter months… but if you live in a Southern state, that’s another story.

Finding Home Farm makes a variety of treats and products for the home, but their Pumpkin Spice Pancake & Waffle Mix caught our eye for its festive flavor and quaint packaging. It’s the perfect Sunday morning breakfast in the Fall for the family!

Who says America doesn’t love their seasons has obviously never been around for pumpkin spice season. We can confirm it is indeed a season when its stamped across clothing like Royce Brand’s Pumpkin Spice Cord shirt. When the weather gets cold, you can cuddle up in this cozy shirt, but hurry it’s almost sold out already!

6. Twinings Pumpkin Spice Chai Tea

48 Hours In Malta

by Steve Leland September 2, 2021
written by Steve Leland

Malta has always been a popular port of call but with it becoming a new staging ground for cruising as a home port, I embarked on a mission to experience everything the southern Mediterranean island could provide as a pre or post cruise option.

Convenient flights to Malta are available from numerous European gateways and our flight from Rome was a quick one hour journey. First impressions mean a lot and a short drive to our hotel provided a fascinating preview of the days to come.

To use the words amazing, incredible and awesome seem inadequate in describing entry into the ancient city of Valletta. Massive limestone walls tower above the road and cathedral domes pierce the skyline as boats graciously slice through the naturally protected harbor. With only 2 days before our next cruise departure, reaching out to Visit Malta, the island’s official tourist entity garnered expert guidance on formulating an itinerary of sights and tastes.

The newly opened, centrally located Iniala Harbour House was chosen as the ultra luxury base of operations for a 48 hour reconnaissance of the Maltese Islands. The property is a designer’s showcase of imagination, spread over four former palace like residences. Spectacular balconied suites provide fascinating views of the harbor and the majestic Three Cities. Eclectic furnishings, a Michelin starred rooftop restaurant, spa and pool all complement its appealing boutique style.

Maltese Morning

With a nightcap of Prosecco, a good night’s sleep and a delicious breakfast under our belts, we  took off on a whirlwind tour with Clive Cortis of Malta Private Guides, expertly condensing thousands of years of Maltese history into the ten minute walk to the Lower Barrack Gardens and the Mediterranean Conference Center. Don’t let the modern day name mislead you.  This massive facility was originally constructed in the 14th century as a hospital by the Order of St. John and was a perfect preamble to the day’s comprehensive experience.

Strolling up Republic Street, the ubiquitous Maltese balconies dominate the facades of typical buildings that line this dividing corridor of sights. Casa Rocca Piccola, a lived in museum belonging to the noble De Piro family is a look back into Maltese life and culture. The family’s descendants are gracious to share an impressive collection of antiques with a stroll through the palazzo. Descend underground through fascinating interconnecting tunnels used as bomb shelters during World War II.

Making your way upward along the street, you will arrive at the marvelous St. John’s Co-Cathedral.  Built between 1573-1577, the Cathedral was formerly the conventual church of the Order.  Although the exterior is modest, entry inside reveals treasure laden chapels, over 400 colorful and graphic marble tombstones that line the floor and vivid frescoes. Caravaggio’s masterpiece painting, the Beheading of St. John lies for viewing in the oratory.

Traveling out of the city by car takes you to the Blue Grotto, a naturally formed arch spanning over the blue seas of the Mediterranean with trips by boats venturing into seven caves. The seaside hamlet of Wied iz-Zurrieq is a great place to stop for a typical flatbread lunch to break up the day.

The ancient Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples stand on a remote hilltop overlooking the sea. Excavated in 1839, these pagan structures suggest construction approximately 3500 BC with several monolith stones still standing.

The Silent City of Mdina depicts a community of mixed architecture with private palaces displaying a resplendent baroque style and another section of the city set in bleak medieval darkness. During the time of the Knights of Malta, the city reigned as the island’s capital and a settlement of Imperial Rome. Today it’s fortified walls and charming alleyways make it an enchanting destination for visitors.

Evenings in Valetta offer a mixed bag of dining opportunities but we beat a retreat from the city center and venture out to the St.Julian area, a hub of activity, shops, nightlife and fine dining.  Taking advantage of its fabulous seafood menu, we chose dinner at Acqua, a stunning venue in the marina of Portomaso. The view of glamorous yachts in the harbour add to the jet set ambience and the exquisitely prepared seafood dishes make for a super evening on the town.

Day 2: Gozo Island

A quick 45 minute fast ferry ride to Gozo Island is an escape to a slower paced lifestyle, routinely enjoyed by Valletta locals. A day trip to the island exposes a different aspect of Maltese lifestyle and culture. Surrounded by the sea this 36 square mile speck of land in the southern Mediterranean is home to only 25,000 residents spread out over several villages.

Serving as the capital, Victoria (Rabat) is the largest of these settlements and is home to St. George’s Cathedral. The modest outside appearance is in stark contrast to the interior spectacle of brilliant gold embellishments and magnificent paintings that adorn the walls. The elaborate altar closely resembles the Bernini masterpiece in St. Peters in the Vatican.

A walk along the ramparts of the well maintained citadel provides a panoramic glimpse of terraced fields, tiny villages and the rooftops of Victoria. Walking the alleyways of the city is an opportunity to witness the Gozo lifestyle in action.

A short drive to the northern coast takes you to the dramatic cliffs Dwerjra Bay. With a lofty view from above, witness divers descending into the azure depths of the curiously positioned Blue Hole. The photogenic seascape of the Mediterranean Sea crashing into the massive cliffs is an indelible photo opportunity.

Sitting atop a hill overlooking the valleys of the island is the architectural masterpiece of Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary. What was and still is a pilgrimage center for believers, beautiful marble sculptures depicting the Way of the Cross line the adjacent hill.

Scenes of small fishing boats, Qbajjar Bay, Calypso’s Cave and uniquely positioned beaches dominate the eastern coast. The 350 year old Xwejni Salt Pans paint a mosaic of rock cut squares that stretch approximately 3 kilometers along the coast and are a testament to a 350 year old tradition of Gozitan sea salt production.

Anything you do in Malta is a voyage back in time and Offbeat Malta Food Trails provides a tantalizing food history curtain call. Maltese cuisine is a blend of cultures and a three hour parade of tastings begins in the main square with a local Cisk beer and traditional pastizzi, a filled pastry with either ricotta, curried peas or possibly meat. Our well versed host, Nick provides fascinating narrative on tradition, architecture and history as we walk the alleyways to a backstreet restaurant that is a local institution amongst locals where a generous bowl of Aljotta awaits. This traditional Maltese seafood soup is stewed with fish, onions, garlic, tomatoes and herb seasonings then strained and added to rice. Although the serving is a meal in itself, there is another venue to experience and we are off to the Kings Own Band Club where a heaping platter of olives, cheeses and ham has been prepared. This only serves as the opening act to the main attraction, a surprisingly delicious portion of slow roasted rabbit is served, a prime example of the French influence.

The evening is capped off with an array of sweet temptations at the elegant rooftop setting of the private Civil Service Sports Club. Although the rooftop is exclusive to our tour and members, the lower level Gracy’s Brasserie is open to guests. It’s a big night living up to high expectations but all good things come to an end. Condensing 7000 years of history into 48 hours is a daunting mission but validates a reason to stay longer or plan a return to Malta. We’ll be back.

Pioneering Women in Cruise Design: Interview with Dee Cooper of Virgin Voyages

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 2, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Brand new cruise ships are incredible feats of engineering, but they’re also incredible feats of design and creativity. From the color schemes to the furniture and decoration, designing a cruise ship from top to bottom is a full time job and the people charged with the task have a whole lot to take into consideration.

For Dee Cooper, Senior Vice President of Design and Customer Experience at Virgin Voyages, the process involved collaborating with some of the world’s top designers, whether or not they had worked on a cruise ship before. Cooper joined Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff to discuss her career at Virgin, what it takes to design not just one, but three brand new cruise ships and some of her favorite design features on board. Check out the full interview below!

How Did Dee Cooper Get Started at Virgin?

To get things started, Cooper was asked about her history with the Virgin brand and how she got into cruise ship design.

“I’ve been working with the Virgin brand for a very long time, I think over 21 years or something crazy like that…I started working for Virgin Atlantic, the long-haul airline based out of the UK, I think when I was 24 down in Gatwick near London in the UK and I was responsible for the design of our aircraft and our terminals and our uniforms and all those kinds of things. I basically grew up, and was lucky enough to work for Virgin Atlantic for 16 years and was responsible for the whole customer experience so everything from the service to the food. I ran the lounge operations as well so I have lots of experience bringing the brand to life which is really why they rang me, I think I started working on this project in 2012, even before we got investors, to create what would Virgin Voyages be and how would it find its place within this amazing cruise vacation that all our competitors offer,” Cooper said.

How Did She Come Up with Such Unique Designs?

Virgin Voyages does things a little differently than other cruise lines and that’s just the way they like it. From calling their guests ‘sailors’ to their focus on health and wellness, a Virgin cruise is truly unlike any other. One of the most talked about features on board the three new ships is the design of the staterooms, which are in some ways similar, but at the same time very different from the cabins you’ll find on other cruise brands. Cooper was asked what the inspiration was for the out-of-the-ordinary design.

“Well, I have to confess, I actually hadn’t been on a cruise before I started working for Virgin Voyages. When I first went on my first ship, myself and my colleagues at the time, there was probably around five or six of us and only two or three of us were non-cruise line industry people, we were so impressed by the staterooms and the fact that you had this amazing view of the sea. You didn’t have to be in a five-star hotel or be a millionaire to have this awesome sea view. So I think that was the first thing we felt was very, very important was for a connection with the sea,” Cooper said.

On the flip side, since Virgin Voyages does things so differently, Cooper was asked if there were any design aspects she saw on competitor cruise lines that they felt they needed to avoid when designing the Virgin fleet.

“To be honest with you, I was very excited by the cruise holiday, cruise vacation, and the chance that it gives you to have different types of holiday, whether it’s a multigenerational holiday, a holiday with family, whether a holiday with friends, the fact that you get to stay together and go apart, to go on shore excursions, I think it’s an amazing holiday and definitely we very much fell in love with sailing and cruising and indeed were inspired by some of the sort of Hollywood perceptions of voyaging. Whether, dare I say it, even the Titanic and the glamour we all associate with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, so we wanted to bring some of that modern glamour back into our ship,” she said.

Does She Have a Favorite Space on Board?

Designing a cruise ship top to bottom means there are a lot of spaces to consider. Cooper was asked if she had a favorite spot on board and which space she though the sailors will enjoy most as well.

“Gosh, it’s very hard, it’s like asking me which one of my children I fancy the best. But I think there are a couple of spaces I love. One of the things we knew was very important and indeed I’d learnt from Virgin Atlantic was first impressions count. When you first board the ship, you board on Deck 7 which is our promenade deck, and you enter directly into the roundabout, so you directly enter the heart of the ship. Immediately it presents the customers, our sailors as we call them, with the choices across the ship. So we have a Dj in the corner with some lovely ambient tunes. We have a bar on the other side so if you want to grab a beer and go for a walk around the deck you can. If you want to treat yourself to an ice cream or if you just want to hang out in a very beautiful, ambient space with dichroic light and one way you see the beam, the width of the ship, so you very much get to understand you’re at see. So think the roundabout, the main entrance and the sort of heart of the ship is very, very important to us and I think people will love,” Cooper said.

Another space she had an affinity for was one of the restaurants on board.

“One of my other favorites is our Razzle Dazzle restaurant. It’s probably one of our more casual restaurants but that’s almost why I like it. It’s more like a canteen feel so it’s relaxed. I can go there when I’m really busy, I want to go to the gym and I need to grab some lunch, and then I want to go out on my shore excursion, I know I can go there and grab some great food, like an macaroni and cheese, something really easy and relaxed and allows me to eat quickly and easily in a fun-inspired space because the concept behind Razzle Dazzle was the camouflaged ships we saw during the first World War, they were painted with the razzle dazzle pattern so that the enemy didn’t know whether you were sailing forward or backward or to the East or West,” she explained.

Amber Cove Denies Debarkation for Unvaccinated Passengers

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 1, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Social media users on board Carnival Magic took to their preferred social platforms this afternoon to update their followers on a disappointing turn of events for their cruise vacation.

After arriving at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic this morning, the ship was initially denied debarkation for guests. After an appeal by the Captain, port officials decided to allow guests to disembark, but not everyone and with certain conditions. Only guests who are full vaccinated against COVID-19 are allowed to disembark, the port would conduct random testing for those who do go ashore, shore excursions were cancelled and the beaches would be off limits for Carnival Magic guests. They would, however, have access to shopping areas and the pool.

On cruise ship #carnivalmagic at Amber Cove in the @GoDomRep They have denied our ship from coming in. Ship@is appealing the decision. Anyone know why? #DominicanRepublic #ambercove @carvivalcruise

— Jill Schenden (@jillybug1515) September 1, 2021

UPDATE: #CarnivalMagic only the vaccinated guests cleared to go ashore. Port will do random testing. No beach visits allowed.

— Dave Beers (@cruisereviewer) September 1, 2021

The passengers on board were told via the intercom system that only fully vaccinated passengers would be allowed ashore, but no explanation was given as to why the Dominican Republic decided on the new restrictions. In August, Carnival’s newest ship Mardi Gras made its first ever call on Amber Cove without incident and that’s a ship with a much larger passenger capacity than Carnival Magic.

Multiple passengers on board reported that the Dominican Republic would be conducting testing, but not the usual nose swab rapid test. Instead, the tests would be of the breath variety, a technology we’ve read about, but haven’t seen implemented anywhere yet. In July, the New York Times ran a story about breath COVID tests used during the Eurovision Song Contest in the Netherlands so it appears they are not science fiction.

If you’re on board Carnival Magic or have recently visited Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, let us know in the comments!

CDC Recommends Unvaccinated Americans Avoid Labor Day Travel

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 1, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

At a COVID-19 Response Team Briefing at the White House on Tuesday, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky warned that unvaccinated Americans should avoid travel over Labor Day weekend due to the rise in COVID-19 cases across the country.

Director Walensky also warned those who are fully vaccinated against the virus to take the necessary precautions if they do decide to travel this weekend.

Rising COVID-19 Cases in America

The United States is currently in the midst of its worst COVID-19 spike since last January. The average number of new cases over the past seven days is around the 160,000 mark, prompting the European Union this week to remove America from their “safe” countries list. In order for a country to find themselves on the “safe” country list, they need to have less than 75 new COVID-19 cases each day per 100,000 people over the previous two weeks. However, each country in the European Union has the autonomy to decide whether or not American citizens are allowed to visit and what protocols they face upon arrival.

Florida currently boasts one of the worst infection rates in the country with over 21,000 new cases per day, according to data provided by the Mayo Clinic. Texas and California are the only two states averaging more than 10,000 new cases per day.

There’s a clear correlation between states that are ahead in vaccinating citizens and those that are not. Mississippi is currently the least vaccinated state in the Union and has a seven day average of 106 new daily cases per every 100,000 people. Less than 38% of the state is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Vermont seems to be faring the best and their status as the most-vaccinated state is a significant reason why. Over the past seven days, the state averages 22 new cases per 100,000 people. Nearly 68% of Vermont is fully vaccinated.

Will you be traveling this weekend? Let us know in the comments!
