History in the Making – There are cruise fans … cruise obsessives … cruise experts … and then there’s Peter Knego.

Monday Mantra

Salvaged!…Salvaged!…Salvaged!

There are cruise fans … cruise obsessives … cruise experts … and then there’s Peter Knego

“I’ll give you 20 bucks if you turn to that woman and say ‘Shut the f— up.’”

That, I believe, was the first thing I ever said…well, whispered…to Peter Knego. I was a little tipsy at the time.

Peter was a tablemate of mine aboard an Emerald Princess cruise in 2007 and the woman everyone at the table wanted to put a muzzle on had been talking — without pause — as though she just might be the most fascinating person to ever set foot aboard a cruise ship. I later learned, however, that it was Peter who just might be the most fascinating person to ever set foot aboard a cruise ship.

We’ve all met cruise writers, historians, and photographers during our sailings, but Peter Knego is a master of all three. His writing and photography is everywhere — in magazines and newspapers, books and websites, including his blog on Maritime Matters — and he is a highly sought onboard lecturer and radio and TV cruise authority. Those things alone would be enough to convey the passion that this tall, slim, quick-smiling former Melamine panels by Emanuele Luzzati from SS AUSONIA (1957), railing from Cunard's SS IVERNIA (1955), maple and mahogany paneling from SS OLYMPIA (1953), starburst from SS EMPRESS OF CANADA (later Carnival's MARDI GRAS), etched glass panel and small serving station from MV AUGUSTUS (1953), steering wheel from Cunard's SS SAXONIA (1954).music promoter (and son of actors Peter Coe and Rosalee Calvert) has for cruise ships and ocean liners. But it’s really just the beginning. When Peter’s not sailing, he lives — literally — among the art, fixtures, and fittings of some of his favorite ships.

And I don’t mean he’s swiped a few bath mats and a dessert dish here and there.

Peter is particularly drawn to the ocean liners of the midcentury, the forgotten vessels that were fitted with the fine woods that today wouldn’t pass SOLAS muster, and the etched glass, nickel, and brass that are prohibitively expensive in today’s shipbuilding world. When Peter learns that one of his beloved ships is headed for the shipbreakers (often the beaches of Alang, India) Peter will likely journey there and endure the heat and oppressive conditions to strike a deal with those planning to dismantle the vessel so he might preserve the rare relics and furnishings that would otherwise be lost forever. Some of these treasures are offered for sale, but much of it, like a pair of wooden doors and a mahogany bar from Aureol, a stair railing from Cunard’s Ivernia, and an Emanuele Luzzati painting from Stella Oceanis, have been meticulously installed in Peter’s home … while I, meanwhile, can’t even find a guy to re-do the wallpaper in my bathroom.

If there’s a ship buff on your gift list this year, you’ll want to check out Peter’s website, Midship Century, where you’ll find furniture, artwDedicated to the memory of Doug Satterblom and Michael Travell, Peter Knego’s and my respective travel companions on that Emerald Princess cruise.ork, fittings, and more salvaged from some of the most cherished ships of yesteryear, along with The Sands of Alang, a documentary that captures Peter’s second and third visits to India’s shipbreaking yards. All of which would please the recipient a whole lot more than underwear and socks.

Epicurious: Caribbean Cuisine

Caribbean cuisine blends international fare with regional ingredients

By Janice Wald Henderson

When it comes to defining Caribbean flavors, first comes a blend of native and African cuisines with European such as French, Spanish, Dutch, and British. Then, add local ingredients such as fresh flavorful fish, sun-ripened tropical fruits and vegetables, and aromatic spices. Now imagine the melting pot of deliciousness! Depending on its cultural influences, each island puts a spin on what comes to the table. And trust me, it’s all good.

Jerking Around

Perhaps no Caribbean dish is more justifiably famous than jerk chicken or pork — sweet, fiery, smoky-tasting, and addictive. A Jamaican staple, it’s also wildly popular on Trinidad, Barbados, and other islands. Chefs riff on the dry or wet-rub recipe, but allspice, thyme, soy, ginger, cinnamon, and crazy-hot Scotch bonnet peppers are usually among the enchanting marinade ingredients. After the meat soaks up all the flavor, it’s smoked over wood or grilled.

Cheat Sheet

Many of us turn to our smart phones to figure out the names of Caribbean dishes. But there’s no guarantee you’ll get good Wi-Fi on the islands, and don’t forget those roaming charges. So before you set sail, study this cheat sheet — and then go eat.

  • Ackee: A vegetable that looks like scrambled eggs when cooked. When served with saltfish (salted cod), it’s the national dish of Jamaica.
  • Callaloo Stew: Made with callaloo leaves from the taro plant. Most popular in Jamaica, Dominica, Trinidad, and Tobago. This thick stew is cooked with coconut milk and okra and might contain salt pork, smoked ham, or seafood.
  • Cassareep: The juice of the bitter cassava root is boiled into a syrup and used to flavor sauces, primarily in the West Indies.
  • Festival: Deep-fried sweetened cornbread dumplings, often served with…

Three More New Ships for American Cruise Lines

Cruise News – Nov. 10, 2016

American Cruise Lines has announced that three new cruise ships for its fleet are now under construction at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland. The line says it has always chosen to build new ships and considers refurbished boats unable to meet its guests’ expectations for comfort, spacious staterooms, and modern amenities.

“American Cruise Lines ships are the newest and most environmentally friendly in America,” says Timothy Beebe, vice president of American Cruise Lines. “By continually designing and building brand-new ships, we are able to exceed the expectations of seasoned European river travelers right here in the U.S.”Staterooms aboard American Constellation

The first to be delivered, the 170-passenger American Constellation, is scheduled to begin cruising in May 2017. The ship is now being outfitted with details including marbled tile bathrooms and large sliding glass doors in each stateroacl_american_constellation_img_2816_ship_2om. Recently the signature red, white, and blue stack was lifted into place on the top deck. Uniquely designed to navigate the coastal waters of the United States, this new ship features active wing stabilizers, the latest green propulsion technology, and many modern amenities. It will also feature the largest staterooms in the industry with private balconies and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. Much of American Constellations’ inaugural summer season will be spent on a new 10-night round-trip itinerary from Boston to popular destinations including Bar Harbor, Newport, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.

The sister ship to American Constellation is also under way and is scheduled to be completed in 2018. In addition, steel is now being fabricated for a third ship, which will be the lead in a series of new riverboats destined for the American rivers. This new, modern riverboat will carry approximately 195 passengers, and the line will relay details and renderings of this new riverboat in the near future.

American Cruise Lines’ current fleet includes four paddlewheelers and four cruise ships.

The newest ship in Seabourn’s fleet, Seabourn Encore, has finished three days of sea trials, and is now receiving the final touches before her November 30 delivery.

Engineers and officers departed the Fincantieri shipyard on November 4 to perform the final tests of the ship’s mechanical and technical systems in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Italy. Video of the first round of tests can be seen at Seabourn’s YouTube page.

Carnival Feast – A sneak peek at Carnival Vista is more than mouthwatering.

by Judi Cuervo November 7, 2016
written by Judi Cuervo

Monday Mantra

Hooked … Hooked … Hooked …

A sneak peek at Carnival Vista is more than mouthwatering.

If you have a serious cruise addiction, particularly if you’ve had it for decades, chances are you can trace it back to Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival’s kind of like the cruise fan’s Marlboro, except when it comes to a cruise addiction (much better for your health and a whole lot cheaper than cigarettes), you never even think of quitting.

My own cruise addiction began in 1976 with a sailing aboard S.S. Mardi Gras and, on Friday, I returned to the line for the first time since I sailed Paradise in 1998 for a one-night glimpse of Carnival’s newest ship, Carnival Vista.

And “glimpse” it certainly was. A single night can barely scratch the surface when you’re talking about a 133,500 grt, nearly 4,000-passenger ship that has a full water park with a 455-foot slide, a multiplex IMAX theater, an onboard brewery, a daredevil rope course, a recumbent-bike sky ride, a comedy club, a gazillion bars, and about 20 dining venues including innovative ones like a Seafood Shack, an ice cream parlor/candy store, and the Cuban-inspired Havana Bar.

I was awestruck, just a bit overwhelmed and realized pretty quickly why Carnival Vista was kicking off with 11-day itineraries — nobody could possibly experience it all in a week. This was no S.S. Mardi Gras, which, if I recall, had a pool, a disco with pink pleather chairs, a theater, and a dining room. This was an extravagant other world that I couldn’t possibly appreciate in the 16 hours I’d be on board.

So let’s eat.

I entered Carnival Vista’s cheery Marketplace Buffet with memories of the hamburgers and hotdogs that comprised lunch during my S.S. Mardi Gras sailing so long ago. Not so aboard Vista. A perfectly medium-rare flatiron steak at a buffet? That’s a miracle. Add salads, some saffron-infused paella, addictive onion focaccia and freshly churned (right in front of you) ice cream and who needs dinner?

That would be me.

Judi Cuervo is overwhelmed by Carnival Vista's everything options.“American Feast” was the evening’s theme in the ship’s two-level Horizons dining room during this one-night introduction to Carnival Vista, and what a menu it was! Appetizers like oysters Rockefeller, salmon tartare, and crispy pork belly were tempting though I went with blue-crab bisque which was divine and not the saline solution that many soups tend to be. Tender, Asian-inspired soy-honey duck was my entrée — a difficult choice among stellar selections that included broiled lobster with jumbo shrimp and grilled lamb chop. Dessert, of course, was Carnival’s signature molten-chocolate lava cake, oozing with a river of fudgy sweetness.

Carnival has certainly changed over the decades. But 16 hours aboard Carnival Vista has convinced me that one thing remains unchanged. Carnival will continue to take casual vacationers and turn them into lifelong cruise addicts — just like they did to me.

Five Faves: Hangin’ Tough at Sea

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 3, 2016

Porthole’s Five Faves

Five favorite moments of this year’s NKOTB cruise!

Yes, they still got the Right Stuff —and eight sold-out cruises to prove it. If you happen to be among the gaggle of girls who fell in love with the New Kids on the Block circa the late ’80s, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

After experiencing our first NKOTB cruise last year, it was basically a no-brainer that my Blockhead-in-crime, Emily, and I would board a subsequent NKOTB cruise, this year setting sail from New Orleans to Cozumel aboard Carnival Triumph, for five days of giddy, glorious mayhem with Donnie Wahlberg, Joe McIntyre, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight-Rodriguez, and Danny Wood.

Upon reflection, it’s hard to narrow down the best-of-the-best times spent on the cruise, but here are five of my favorite NKOTB cruise moments.

Chance Encounter

My first favorite moment actually came before the cruise even set sail. There I was in the Fort Lauderdale airport about to board my flight to New Orleans. At the gate by 6:30 a.m., I sleepily turned around to see Danny Wood standing just feet away from me! (OMG! What do I dooooo???)

Of course, my stunned 13-year-old self took over and essentially froze my stunned 40-year-old self so that all I could finally muster was a shy, “I think we’re going to the same place” — complete with a simultaneous punch to his arm. No, it wasn’t a hard punch (plus, have you seen this guy’s guns?), but it was clearly lame enough for him to respond, “That’s what you’re going to do? You’re just going to punch me?”

Eventually, after spending the hour-long flight convincing myself that yes, I am good enough, I am smart enough, and doggone it, people like me, I gathered up the nerve to approach him again at baggage claim, this time having a normal “can’t wait for the cruise” conversation plus a well-deserved selfie!

Souped-Up Sailaway

It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for since booking the cruise. The countdown is finally over and we’re trying our best to take advantage of this very moment. While sailaways are the best part of every cruise, a NKOTB cruise sailaway starts with a traditional pledge as the crowd repeats after Donnie Wahlberg that we “hereby pledge to spend the next four days having the time of my life!”

Then, the crowd goes wild as the ship pulls away from port and our favorite New Kids descend upon the Lido Deck and take to the three stages to sing, dance, chat with the crowd, and basically get us pumped up for what the next four days will bring.
Ready for Donnie's pledge as we sail away.
Cue the Concert

By far the biggest highlight of the cruise was the concert held in the intimate 1,400-seat Rome Lounge. A true-blue, boy-band concert complete with strobe lights, confetti, and a song list complete with all our faves, both old and new.

Between songs, like a New Kids timeline, the five — all original members — would talk through their experiences and share stories from the early days until today. As emotional Blockheads, we laughed, we cried, we sang, we danced, and it was the best. night. ever!

https://youtu.be/si7TNwWMIyg

Just the Three of Us

Beyond the concerts and photo sessions, in between power shopping in Cozumel and standing in line to peruse the NKOTB store, we were, of course, on a cruise ship, and I knew better than anyone that there was much more to explore than the areas where the dedicated events were taking place.

So one night, when the rest of the crazy Blockheads were lining the Lido Deck hours before the next party, Emily and I decided to belly up to the quiet Alchemy Bar, not a soul in sight. Typically a crowded spot during a regular Carnival cruise, it turned out it was just me, Emily, and Olga the mixologist who personally concocted some amazing cocktails for us. (We recommend the Cucumber Sunrise or The Remedy.)

Emily and Joe McIntyreThe best part about this time was the break from the crowds and the craziness. We actually lost track of time as we finally had the chance to chat, reminisce, and look up old high-school friends on Facebook (of course) before becoming one of the crazy Blockheads lining the Lido Deck.

Last-Night Party

Every night of the cruise featured a different themed Lido Deck party (Purple Night, Neon Glow Night, Halloween Night, and GPS Night) and each would go later and later into the wee hours. The final night of the cruise, however, Donnie Wahlberg promises to party until the ship literally pulls back into port.

It’s hard to flake out when the music keeps going, and you never know what one of the guys will do (pull fans on stage, tell a great story, etc.) Each hour the crowd thins a little at a time, but Emily and I swore we’d do our best to literally party like it was 1999 (i.e., when we were 23 years old) and make it as long as possible. We called it a night, er, morning, around 4:30 a.m. … pretty darn close to the actual 5:30 a.m. arrival! There’s always next year (we hope!).

Beginning in November, guests sailing regularly to Amber Cove on six additional Carnival Corporation brands (AIDA Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and P&O Cruises UK) will be able to purchase a social-impact excursion — a new participatory and immersive travel category pioneered by Fathom that takes travelers into the heart of a destination to explore local communities and discover its people in unconventional ways.

“The social-impact experiences create enduring positive impact in the lives of children, families, and communities, significantly affecting bright futures,” says Tara Russell, president of Fathom and global impact lead for Carnival Corporation. “It is exciting to offer thousands of guests who sail to Amber Cove with our family of brands the opportunity to be part of Fathom’s broader story.”

Since Fathom began its every-other-week voyages in May 2016 to Amber Cove —located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic — its guests have been able to produce and install 730 water filters for local families, construct concrete floors for hundreds of people in 40 homes, plant nearly 16,000 seedlings and plants, and provide approximately 17,500 hours of English conversational language skills training to adult and youth students.

To expand the Fathom social-impact experience, the company will provide the following new shore excursions:

Hands-On Chocolate Experience at a Women’s Cooperative:  Travelers will engage in an immersive cultural experience and make an impact in the Puerto Plata community during a unique, hands-on visit to a chocolate cooperative founded by enterprising local women. Travelers will visit the small community of Altamira where they will discover Chocal, a tiny organic-chocolate factory run by a group of local women committed to earning an income while remaining close to their families. Travelers will have the opportunity to work alongside these women to participate in the chocolate production process from bean to bar, a truly rewarding experience.

Fathom's "Repapel" recycled paper excursion in the Dominican Republic.Volunteer Experience at Recycled Paper & Crafts Entrepreneurship: For a rewarding experience that makes an impact on local communities, travelers may embark on an engaging and immersive cultural experience visiting artisans at a recycling micro-business. In the little village of El Javillar, travelers will find the RePapel co-op, a Recycled Paper & Crafts initiative that has taught local women to repurpose natural, recycled paper into treasures. Travelers will work side by side with these friendly women, discovering all aspects of the program, including creating new products for sale. At the end of their experience, travelers may purchase keepsake products to take home as mementos of their day.

Fathom is also currently exploring additional opportunities globally and with sister brands, and says further news will be shared in coming months.

Chef Emmanuel Renaut to Launch French Bistro Aboard Majestic Princess

Cruise News – Nov. 2, 2016

Princess Cruises announced a partnership with three-Michelin-star Chef Emmanuel Renaut to develop the cruise line’s next specialty restaurant concept. La Mer – A French Bistro by Emmanuel Renaut will debut in April 2017 aboard Majestic Princess, the cruise line’s newest ship tailored for the China market.

Following the previous announcement of a partnership with another Michelin-star chef, Richard Chen, who will serve his interpretation of classic Cantonese dishes at Harmony, Majestic Princess will be the only cruise ship to offer two specialty dinner menus designed by Michelin star chefs at sea in China.

Emmanuel Renaut is the highly acclaimed executive chef of three-Michelin-star restaurant Flocons de Sel in the French Alps. Before establishing the restaurant in 1998, Chef Renaut cooked in some of the finest kitchens in Paris and London.

Offering an authentic yet updated Parisian bistro experience at La Mer, Chef Renaut is crafting a fine dining dinner menu featuring authentic French cuisine made unique with his modern twists, including favorites from his Flocons Bistrot menu as well as new concepts developed for La Mer. The specialty dinner experience will include a (to-be-determined) nominal cover charge. In addition, La Mer will offer complimentary lunch and breakfast options created by the Princess culinary teams.

“What I like most about my job is that dining experiences touch people’s emotions,” said Chef Renaut. “I’ve worked enthusiastically to design delicate and flavorful dishes and I’m really proud that the dinner menu I created will be served in the elegant and relaxed environment of La Mer.”

Located in the lively atrium aboard Majestic Princess, La Mer combines French style and authentic Parisian details with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer ocean views.

You can watch the launch announcement video here.

Oceania Enthusiasm – When you can’t believe cruising can be like this.

Oooooceania!…Ooooooceania!….Ooooooceania!

Oceania Enthusiasm: When you can’t believe cruising can be like this

✓ A prestigious luxury cruise line.

✓ A stunning 684-passenger mid-size ship.

✓ Award-winning dining.

✓ Regular New York departures.

✓ Fabulous Bulgari bath amenities (a lot of ‘em!) in suites.

✓ Calls at some of my favorite ports including my beloved Bermuda.

It’s like an early Christmas present! Oceania Cruises has just announced regular sailings from New York City beginning this summer!

Here’s the story: On Friday, I strolled (okay, I was propelled by a fierce wind) from my Sixth Avenue office to Pier 88 on Twelfth Avenue for a luncheon aboard the latest addition to the Oceania fleet: the beautiful Sirena. I swiped my visitor’s pass to board and suddenly felt like I was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz when she steps out of the fallen house and finds everything transformed from black-and-white to glorious color. This was exactly my kind of décor. No harsh glass and chrome, polka dots, or zebra stripes but, instead, warm jewel tones and comfortable plush elegance from stern to bow — sort of like the living room of a very, very, very rich friend with exquisite taste.

And speaking of taste, lunch in Sirena’s main dining room was a triumph: caviar, risotto with lobster, pasta, venison Wellington and an ethereal sweet meringue to top it off. And the wines? I wanted to wash my hair in the red one, it was so good.

I have to admit, before Friday I had never set foot on any of Oceania’s six ships but after one look around, one sampling of the cuisine, and one glimpse at that hat box filled with Bulgari toiletries in the Owner’s Suite, there’s no question: I like this line’s style.

And I really like their approach to New York sailings!

Beginning in July and continuing right through the fall, Sirena’s sister ship Insignia will operate regular 10-day, 11-day and longer sailings to Canada and Bermuda from…drum roll…the ever-so-convenient New York Passenger Ship Terminal right smack in midtown. That means I can throw out those Mapquest directions that attempt to explain how the heck to get to Bayonne and Red Hook.

Itineraries? Thanks to Oceania, there’s no need to decide between cruising to Canada and New England or to Bermuda because, like two-mints-in one, you get both on many sailings. And the biggest kick is that most of these sailings offer overnights in Bermuda — both Hamilton and the lovely and historic St. George’s, the latter all but ignored once ships started growing wider than Charlize Theron’s butt did for her role in Tully and could no longer fit through the narrow Town Cut. Now, with the 30,200 grt Insignia, a whole new generation of cruisers will be able to marvel as their ship navigates this unforgiving passage.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Oceania! It’ll be a pleasure, and a luxury, to have you here!

Porthole Cruise News Briefs – Oct. 28, 2016

  • This week, AIDA Cruises’ AIDAluna served as a floating fashion runway in New York City. Supermodel Jessican Minh Anh presented her J Autumn Fashion Show, featuring designs from houses in Peru, Lebanon, Poland and around the globe, on the ship’s sun deck with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.
  • The tender port of Papetoai on the Tahitian island of Moorea has opened a new wharf dedicated to cruise ship passengers. The facility includes covered premises for local arts and crafts, activities, shore excursions and on-island transportation.
  • Emerald Waterways has announced their first LGBT river cruise, the 8-day LGBT Danube Explorer itinerary. Special guests on the Budapest-to-Nuremburg voyage include Britain’s Gaydio Breakfast Show radio hosts Chris Holliday and Emma Goswell, who will be broadcasting live from the ship for three days.
  • Fathom is celebrating the difference their first 13 social-impact sailings have made to the lives of people in the Dominican Republic. Cruisers planted 16,000 seedlings, produced 730 clay water filters, installed concrete floors in 40 homes, provided approximately 17,500 hours of interaction with English-language students, and cleaned enough cocoa to manufacture 109,000 chocolate bars.
  • Princess Cruises has debuted its new livery, first seen on China’s Majestic Princess (盛世公主号), in the United States. The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess showed off the new iconic logo-based hull art on arrival into Ft. Lauderdale on October 22.

Norwegian Bliss Hull Art Unveiled

Cruise News – Oct. 26, 2016

Norwegian Cruise Line president and CEO, Andy Stuart, joined world-renowned marine-life artist and ocean conservationist Wyland at Fort Lauderdale’s Wyland Galleries to unveil the original hull artwork for Norwegian Bliss, which sets sail from Seattle in June 2018.Artist Wyland and Norwegian Cruise Line president Andy Stuart.

The ship, which is being custom-built for cruising in Alaska, will boast hull artwork by Wyland titled “Cruising with the Whales,” prominently featuring a humpback whale and calf as well as sea creatures including sea turtles, a pelican, an albatross, and bottlenose dolphins. (Wyland is also drafting a whale tail for the back of the ship that is still to be determined.)

Five years ago, Norwegian began to partner with world-renowned artists to design hull artwork that essentially coincided with where the ship was based. In 2011, the line commissioned Peter Max to create the hull artwork for Norwegian Breakaway sailing from New York, David “LEBO” Le Batard for Norwegian Getaway from Miami, Guy Harvey for Norwegian Escape from Miami, Tan Ping for Norwegian Joy from Shanghai and Beijing, and now, Wyland for Norwegian Bliss from Seattle.

“It’s been a great tradition to be able to partner with incredible artists and it took less than a second to figure out who was the only possible artist who could design a piece of artwork that could live in Alaska,” said Stuart. “It goes beyond just art on the side of ship. We’re very much aligned in how we think about conservation and preservation of the ocean and the long-term sustainability of the oceans on which we sail.”

Wyland joked that for an artist who likes to drive around looking at empty buildings as canvases, now he has the opportunity to paint on the most perfect canvas — on the side of a ship.

“I hope my art inspires people to see the beauty in nature and hopefully work to preserve it,” said Wyland, who has drawn on 30 years of experience diving around the world to paint more than 100 ocean murals throughout the United States and 18 other countries. “If you like to breathe, than you probably want to protect the ocean, because every second breath you take comes from the ocean.”

The 4,000-guest Norwegian Bliss will be available for reservations beginning January 2017.
