Lines Granted Approval to Cruise to Cuba

Lines Granted Cuba Cruise Approval

Cruise News – Dec. 7, 2016

In a landmark day for cruising, several major cruise companies have announced approval to cruise to Cuba.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. announced that it has received approval from the government of the Republic of Cuba to operate cruises to Cuba. Beginning March 2017, all three of the company’s brands — Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — will offer U.S. travelers the opportunity to visit the culturally and historically rich country. The voyages will provide guests with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover the rich culture, history, and natural beauty of Cuba, as well as the hospitality of its people.

The company’s first cruise to Cuba will set sail from PortMiami on Oceania Cruises’ Marina on March 7, 2017, with select Caribbean itineraries featuring calls on Havana, including many multiple-day calls to allow guests plenty of time to explore Havana and its environs. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Mariner will call on Havana during two cruises in April 2017. Norwegian Sky will also offer a selection of four-day voyages that will overnight in Havana in May 2017.

“We are tremendously excited to have all three of our award-winning brands receive approval from the Cuban authorities to offer cruises to Cuba from the United States,” said Frank Del Rio, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “As a Cuban-American and founder of Oceania Cruises, I am incredibly proud that one of Oceania’s vessels will be our company’s first to sail to Cuba. This is truly a dream come true for me, and I cannot wait for our loyal guests to experience the sights and sounds of my hometown of Havana and get to know its rich culture and its warm and welcoming residents.”

Guests sailing on all three brands will have a selection of shore excursions to choose from, all of which offer an authentic Cuban experience that explores the people, art, history, and culture of the island.

In addition, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. today announced that the Cuban government has granted approval for the company to begin cruises to Cuba on two of its lines: Royal Caribbean International and Azamara Club Cruises.

“Our guests have expressed real interest in having the opportunity to experience Cuba, and we look forward to bringing them there,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “Our discussions with our travel partners indicate that Cuba is a destination that appeals to a new generation of travelers.”

Azamara Quest will depart Miami on March 21, 2017 for a 13-night Azaleas, Bourbon Street and Havana roundtrip voyage, calling on Key West, Tampa, New Orleans (for two overnights), Cozumel, and an overnight stay in Havana.

Empress of the Seas will departing Miami on April 19, 2017, for a 5-night sailing that visits Havana. The ship will then reposition to Tampa, offering two itineraries with calls to Havana on April 30 (7-night sailing) and May 20 (5-night sailing).

These cruises will provide guests with travel directly to Cuba for the purpose of providing people-to-people exchanges between guests and Cuban citizens and other travel permitted by current U.S. regulations.

Also, Pearl Seas Cruises was granted permission to begin cruising to Cuba from Florida in January 2017. The line is offering a 10-night cruise scheduled to depart Fort Lauderdale on January 17, 2017, and circumnavigate the island, stopping in Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Santiago de Cuba.

Five Faves: Sea Days on Oceania Cruises’ Riviera

by Steve Leland December 7, 2016
written by Steve Leland

Savor Your Sea Days

Five Favorite Things to do During a Trans-Atlantic Cruise

I never thought I would enjoy a trans-Atlantic cruise. I envisioned a version where my budget would restrict me to steerage class (whatever that is); waltzing to big bands and high tea at 4 p.m. didn’t exactly ring my bell; and, having worked aboard cruise ships for 15 years, I’ve always needed some exciting port or destination to bolster my reluctance to leave terra firma.

The adage, “you’ll never know until you try” seemed acceptable, so an appealing 14-day trans-Atlantic scenario aboard Oceania Cruises’ Riviera stamped the cruise dance card. I could easily chronicle the square footage of the idyllic stateroom, wax poetic on the origins of glittering chandeliers, and extol the virtues of the exquisite linens that grace an exceptional bed. But what about those seven days at sea?

Of course, there are the traditional standby activities such as shuffleboard, golf putting, trivia quizzes, and the like, but this ship serves up some exclusive game changers. You can count me in for these five favorite onboard activities that will shake anyone out of high seas cruise sedation.

  1. La ReserveOceania has teamed up with Wine Spectator to feature La Reserve by Wine Spectator, a classy and elaborate venue for educational wine tastings by day and exclusive dinner and wine pairing events by night. You’ll never find me doing crossword puzzles or playing shuffleboard on deck, but offer me a wine tasting and I’m front row and center. I consider this as part of my extended adult education.
  2. The Bon Appétit Culinary Center, under the tutelage of master chefs, provides participants with exclusive cooking classes at sea, preparing a variety of dishes at individual cooking stations. These actual culinary lessons go beyond a simple demonstration and showcase the high standards of the food preparation on board.
  3. The indulgent spa facilities of the Canyon Ranch SpaClub boast life’s grand pleasures. Consummate nurturing, fitness classes, and an endless list of opportunities for rejuvenation are a natural complement to the luxury cruise experience. I can’t even pronounce some of the therapies offered, but I know if they have them, I must need them.
  4. Artist LoftThe ship’s Artist Loft is hosted by a renowned artist who will seek out and assist your inner Picasso. Paints, canvas, and all related supplies are furnished to all artistic dreamers. I’ve always felt that somewhere inside of me is a latent talent just waiting for discovery and this may well be the path to opening my very own gallery.
  5. In respect to the parameters of the title of this blog, “Five Faves,” I have to be creative to pay homage to the following contributions to my cruise ADD.
    • 5a. Six à la carte restaurants, all with no supplemental charge, means nonstop indulging.
    • 5b. Outdoor public areas that are proportionately more spacious than other ships this size.
    • 5c. A balconied stateroom so resplendent I feel guilty leaving it.
    • 5d. Fourteen nights of polished entertainment.

Riviera goes well above the expected in regards to organized activities, and the onboard vibe was far more spirited than I had imagined a trans-Atlantic cruise to be. Who knows? Maybe I’ll learn to like waltzing and high tea at 4 p.m. after all.

Princess Cruises Announces Best Price Guarantee on Shore Excursions

Cruise News – Dec. 7, 2016

Princess Cruises has announced its Shore Excursions Best Price Guarantee, which is available on thousands of tours in ports around the world. The program launched fleetwide and guarantees that if a guest finds the same shore excursion elsewhere at a lower price, they will receive 110 percent of the difference in the form of a nonrefundable onboard credit.

“Our new Best Price Guarantee on shore excursions gives guests satisfaction that they are receiving competitive and fair pricing while enjoying an exceptional experience ashore,” said Bruce Krumrine, vice president of shore excursions for Princess Cruises. “We find our guests rate their overall cruise vacation experience higher when they take our shore excursions because we handle every detail for them so they can easily explore the world and take home lifelong memories of the places they visit.”

The new Best Price Guarantee is available to guests who book their excursions with Princess pre-cruise. If guests find an equivalent shore excursion at a lower price, the request can be submitted at least seven days prior to the sailing date to [email protected] for review by the Shore Excursion customer service team. Within two business days, guests will be notified if their request meets the Best Price Guarantee criteria. If it does, 110 percent of the price difference will be applied in the form of a nonrefundable onboard credit.

The Best Price Guarantee only applies to shore excursions that are advertised with pricing and publicly available. It applies to all shore excursions, with the exception of Asia, Southeast Asia, and Japan ports, and excludes private vehicle and driver excursions in ports worldwide.

Caribbean Cruising Gets Cool – and Hot!

by Judi Cuervo December 5, 2016
written by Judi Cuervo

Monday Mantra

SPActacular! … SPActacular! … SPActacular!

I don’t want to be scrubbed with grated coconut or have my body wrapped in banana leaves. The tinkle of chimes doesn’t help me achieve well-being and I sure don’t want to dunk my feet in a tank and let hundreds of hungry little fish nibble the dead skin off my heels. I have no idea where my chakra is and if I haven’t found it by now, I figure I really don’t need it.

And yet somehow, after just a few visits to Viking Star’s thermal suite, I have been transformed into a spa girl. It’s just a matter of time before you’ll find me laying on a table with mud on my face and cucumber slices on my eyes being all “mindful” and stuff.

Joining the spa contingent at my age can be sort of overwhelming but an hypnotic faux fireplace lured me down the corridor and into the guts of the sweetly-scented Viking Star LivNordic Spa thermal suite during my recent 11-day Caribbean cruise. (Well, that and the fact that the thermal suite is free.) Before me were bubbling pools, large and small, secret little chambers, heated tile lounge chairs and the most awesome shower ever with jets shooting out from all angles, a wide rain shower head and a strong concentrated center stream that could give you a concussion.

I want that thing in my bathroom at home.

The spa lockers really floated my boat. Ducking into the women’s changing room to squeeze into my Miraclesuit, I found a wall of them, each operated by my cabin key and stocked with a bathrobe, a towel, rubber slippers and — get this — a little packet of panties to change into after soaking, steaming and chilling yourself like a shrimp cocktail. Seriously! No other ship has given me panties … and while they’re not a pair of Wacoal Embrace bikinis, they sure stand up to washing.

But I was really there for fire and ice, that centuries old Nordic ritual that plops you into a molten-hot steam room for about 10 minutes (15 if, like me, you’re stuck in there with a man who won’t stop talking about his dysfunctional family) before you swing over to the pore-closing jc_cuervo_grotto_img_0773snow grotto which is what Vermont in February would resemble if it was condensed into a 10×10-foot enclosure with a door: bone-numbing temperatures, falling snow and piles of the stuff heaped on benches all under an eerie blue glow.

After a couple of newbie mistakes (do NOT go into the snow grotto barefoot — owwwww! — there’s a reason why those rubber slippers are in the locker, and always put a towel down on the snow-covered bench before sitting down in a swimsuit), I got the hang of it and returned day after day, always leaving refreshed and rejuvenated.

Viking Star’s snow grotto … it’s the coolest thing at sea … literally.

Royal Caribbean’s North Star Breaks World Record

Cruise News – Dec. 1, 2016

Royal Caribbean International has made it into the Guinness Book of World Records with its North Star attraction aboard the line’s Quantum-class ships. This one-of-a-kind glass observation capsule gently rises more than 300 feet in the air and rotates upward and over the sides of the ship to provide amazing 360-degree views, which helped the North Star break the record for “Highest Viewing Deck on a Cruise Ship.”

All three Quantum-class ships feature the North Star: Quantum of the Seas from Beijing (Tianjin), China; Ovation of the Seas from Shanghai (Baoshan), Sydney, and Singapore; and Anthem of the Seas from Cape Liberty Cruise Port in New York Harbor to Bermuda, The Bahamas, and the Caribbean.

BBC Earth Experiences Rolling Out Across Holland America Line Fleet

Cruise News – Nov. 29, 2016

Guests on Holland America Line ships can experience more of the world’s natural wonders, test their knowledge of our planet, and participate in family-friendly competitions through the cruise line’s exclusive partnership with BBC Earth. These unique performances and interactive programs, which are currently available on ms Koningsdam, ms Noordam, ms Rotterdam, ms Oosterdam, ms Zuiderdam, and ms Eurodam, will be rolled out to the rest of the fleet (except ms Prinsendam) by March 2017.

“Since announcing the BBC Earth partnership, we have been looking forward to launching the programming on board; and now that it’s rolling out across the fleet it’s even more engaging and visually powerful than we imagined,” says Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “Our guests are destination seekers with a desire to learn more and know more when they are cruising with us. ‘BBC Earth Experiences’ bring them to the most remote corners of the world in an incredibly innovative way.”

Frozen Planet: Live on KoningsdamThe new offerings immerse guests in BBC Earth’s award-winning experiences including “Frozen Planet Live,” a groundbreaking concert based on the BBC Earth “Frozen Planet” television series. “Frozen Planet Live,” on each ship’s main stage, features live musicians playing a specially orchestrated musical score by award-winning composer George Fenton as the images unfold on screen, taking guests on a journey into the wilderness of the polar regions.

Additional activities include “Inside Earth” documentary films; “What on Earth!” family game show, which uncovers all that’s weird, wonderful, and obscure in our natural world; and BBC Earth’s countdown fact shows, which are specially developed “BBC Earth for Club HAL Tweens.”

Guests who want a deeper BBC Earth experience can join select feature cruises with producers, cameramen, and presenters who will host master classes and question-and-answer sessions in their field. In 2017, four BBC Earth feature cruises have been scheduled. Featured guest talent will be announced at a later date. Feature cruises include:

  • January 29, ms Koningsdam — 7-day Eastern Caribbean, roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale
  • April 7, ms Oosterdam — 18-day Panama Canal transit from Tampa to San Diego
  • July 8, ms Maasdam — 7-day Canada and New England cruise from Montréal to Boston
  • October 27, ms Volendam — 14-day Taiwan and Japan sailing from Shanghai to Hong Kong

In addition, to celebrate Holland America Line’s 70th anniversary of exploring Alaska, a new BBC Earth Alaska show will be developed for the 2017 Alaska cruise season. Show details will be revealed in early 2017.

Going Down? – Viking Star soothes away everything — including the arrival of the elevator, every time.

by Judi Cuervo November 28, 2016

Monday Mantra

Viking SUPER Star…Viking SUPER Star…Viking SUPER Star…

Going Down?

Viking Star soothes away everything — including the arrival of the elevator, every time.

Life is pretty darn good when everything is so perfect that an elevator’s “ping” is your biggest problem.

Let me explain. I’m currently aboard Viking Ocean Cruises’ Viking Star, an astoundingly beautiful, light-filled and exquisitely appointed mid-size cruise ship — but it’s not just the visuals that are making me go gaga. If this was a PowerPoint presentation, I’d be producing slide after slide studded with star bursts and exclamation points celebrating features that demonstrate a staggering commitment to quality and meticulous detail. Stuff like consistently fabulous cuisine (a WHOLE lobster instead of a mere lobster tail, anyone?), a spa that has convinced me that … hmmm … maybe this flopping-around-in-bubbling-water thing isn’t so stupid after all, and a staff that exudes such cheer and enthusiasm that if they weren’t all so capable, I’d suspect they were poppin’ happy pills.

And then there’s all the free stuff — Wi-Fi, a shore excursion at each port, bottled water, free-flowing wine with lunch and dinner, passenger laundry rooms, and access to the ship’s thermal suite. So essentially a guest can board, dine regally even at specialty restaurants, get tipsy, see the sights, immerse themselves in the healing waters of the spa, and wash their dirty underwear all without spending an extra dime.

But back to that elevator “ping.” I’ve found that it’s the only thing that Viking Star lacks — completely. I can only assume that the Viking gods (and gods they are to have created a ship and experience as superb as this one) were so concerned with their guests’ comfort that they believed a “ping” might interrupt the relaxing, almost hypnotic musical soundtrack that pervades each deck’s serene ambience.

What those Viking gods overlooked, however, is the scatterbrained and oblivious guest … like myself. The one whose mind wanders the second she calls the elevator and who counts on that “ping” to act as a melodic “Yo! I’m here!”

So, time and again, I find myself missing the silently arriving car, sometimes catching movement seconds too late — sort of like watching as the doors of the 6:02 to Babylon close and the train begins chugging down the track while I’m still stuck on the platform at Penn Station. Judi Cuervo has learned to love Viking Star's stairwellsBut aboard Viking Star, I guess it’s not really that bad because if I did always ride the elevators, I’d likely miss some of the incredible art that appears on the ship’s stair landings — art that I’m very well acquainted with by now.

Throughout the cruise, I find myself interrogating fellow guests, asking how they feel about the quietly arriving elevators, whether they too are seeking that “ping” that would ease the commute from Deck 7 to 1. They look at me like I’m crazy.

They’re probably thinking about the velvety corn chowder at lunch or the steak at Manfredi’s, the infinity pool, the spa’s snow grotto, and the cheerful staff. And certainly, they’re thinking that life is pretty darn good when everything is so perfect that an elevator’s “ping” is your biggest problem.

Five New Foodie Experiences aboard Holland America Line’s Koningsdam

Dig In!

Five New Foodie Experiences aboard Holland America Line’s Koningsdam

When it comes to Holland America Line’s new ship, ms Koningsdam, there’s been a lot of attention paid to its innovative entertainment options such as the Music Walk, which includes Lincoln Center Stage, Billboard Onboard, and B.B. King’s Blues Club. But lucky for foodies, the culinary experience has also been extensively rethought with a theme of authenticity.

15094346_10154269547694403_1298355263291232188_nDuring a recent cruise, I talked with Holland America’s Master Chef and Culinary Council Chairman, Rudi Sodamin, who explained that paying homage to Holland America’s Dutch heritage, creating more engaging experiences for guests, and connecting better to the ports of call were some of the goals of the changes.

Highlights including the pistachio gelato made on board from Sicilian pistachios and the savory Duck Cassoulet in Sel de Mer restaurant may be enough to have me booking another cruise.

Here are five more reasons:

Sel de Mer

Sel de Mer is the latest upscale restaurant for Holland America, which debuted on Koningsdam. This is a real French brasserie in every way, from the black and white traditional uniforms to the Paris street scene painted along one wall to the chalkboard out front with the trolley displaying the daily fresh fish specials. Since it’s limited to only around 40 seats, the chefs at Sel de Mer will be venturing into port to find the local catch of the day for that night’s special. So in the Caribbean it may be red snapper or grouper, in Alaska it may be local halibut or salmon. It’s the perfect way to get a deeper dive into the local experience. Sel de Mer will be appearing as a pop-up restaurant throughout the fleet over the next year.

Grand Dutch Café

15107192_10154269547719403_755874615267558733_nGrand Dutch Café is a tribute to Holland with its blue and white color scheme and architectural elements that emulate the rooftops of Amsterdam. It serves a variety of Dutch specialties from pea soup to poffertjes (mini pancakes) to Koningsbols (like a chocolate éclair only better!) Dutch beers and liquors are also available and I love that there are plenty of seating options from stand-up bars for a quick coffee to a lovely alcove that feels like a verandah on the street in Amsterdam. This was one of my favorite spots to get away and sip a latte.

Culinary Arts Center

The Culinary Arts Center has been completely transformed on Koningsdam and is an immersive and intimate experience for cooking classes during the day. At night it becomes a charming farm-to-table restaurant with the chef engaging with the diners explaining the preparation of the meal. There are a couple of main course options and the rest of the menu is a set five courses of smaller, healthy dishes where the individual quality ingredients take center stage. Each course features sprouts, vegetable shoots, and cress grown in the onboard garden, which is located next to the dining room.

15181303_10154269547714403_3249240302261775268_n

BLEND

For those of us who consider wine an essential part of our dinner meal, there is BLEND, a unique wine-blending experience. Stop by and have the onsite wine sommelier help you combine your own unique blend from the five single-vintage varietals on tap. They’ll then bottle your creation to take for your dinner at any of the restaurants on board or to take home as a souvenir.

Lobster Shack

There are so many things to do on Koningsdam, it’s hard to get motivated to leave the ship, but this should get you off that deck chair. Just opened in mid-November, the Lobster Shack on Holland America’s private island, Half Moon Cay, grills fresh Caribbean lobster just steps from the beach. The smell of the grilling lobster wafts from this casual open-air shack with just a few barstools gathered around the chef. Grill-marks impart a smoky taste to the large lobster tails that are served with a rice mix and salsa, as well as the classic melted butter, of course. (There is a $20 charge per lobster meal.)

Porthole’s Five Faves

Five Fave Disney Wonder Reimagined Results …

… As Explained By Frozen Lyrics

No one would have ever classified Disney Wonder as a fixer-upper, but that didn’t stop Disney Cruise Line from putting the ship into a recent six-week dry dock and enhancing almost every space imaginable. With improvements both large (like a new atrium chandelier that evokes the flower in Ariel’s hair in The Little Mermaid) and relatively small (platform beds in the cabins that allow more space underneath so luggage is easier to conceal, not see or feel), Disney has left no troll-like rock unturned in finding more ways to instill cruising magic. So now that the past is in the past, Porthole has five favorite new Disney Wonder reimagined renovations:

“For the first time in forever / there’ll be music, there’ll be light”
Tiana’s Place (Deck 3)

As Disney Wonder’s first restaurant to offer live music and entertainment, Tiana’s Place couldn’t be a more perfect choice for dining and dancing through the night. Not only is this French Quarter, southern-style restaurant inspired by the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog in décor and design, but Princess Tiana herself is there welcoming guests, singing and dancing along with The Crawfish Crooners jazz band, and ultimately leading a table-winding parade in which kids are encouraged to grab their instrument-shaped menus and follow along in the soul-affirming celebration. Other dining highlights on Disney Wonder include the introduction of the popular “Draw Your Own Character” show at Animator’s Palate and the recent expansion of the Palo menu to include more Northern Italian dishes and a delightful-twist-on-a-dessert-favorite: amaretto soufflé (in case you want to stuff something other than chocolate soufflé in your face).

“I’ve been searching my whole life to find my own place / and maybe it’s the party talking …”
Crown & Fin Pub (Deck 3)

There’s definitely a sense of awe, arrival, and actual accomplishment as you walk into this inviting neighborhood pub you’ve been waiting your entire cruising life to experience at sea. There are a number of international beers in bottles and on tap, but the drink in your hand (regardless of proximity to burning sand) just has to be their custom ESB — also called Crown & Fin — that is super-smooth and hardly bitter at all. Pull up a comfy green-padded stool at a high-top table or find a booth to sink in so you can laugh and talk all evening … or simply try to absorb all the attentions to detail, Disney or otherwise.

“We looked at all of the different stories that we’ve told on film that take place throughout Great Britain,” says Theron Skees, Portfolio Creative Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering, “and we tried to bring little props all throughout the space. When you walk in, just in that little vestibule, look up on the shelf and you’ll see a certain umbrella from a certain nanny.”

“Don’t let the frostbite bite”
Oceaneer Club (Deck 5)

Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post, a winter cabin seemingly dropped into the Oceaneer Club from straight out of Arendelle, boasts toys and hidden treasures on every flat surface as well as animated windows from which a friendly “hoo-hoo” can magically pop out at any moment. But it hardly tells the entire Oceaneer Club renovation story.

The Oceaneer Club has always offered kids the opportunity to meet characters and have fun in a designated no-adults space. But the pirate ship theme that once defined the room has now broadened into multiple spaces telling stories and offering interactions for a wide range of ages. New themed spaces include Club Disney Junior (where characters like Doc McStuffins appear to treat stuffed animals), Andy’s Room (where Toy Story favorites come to life), the Frozen Adventures section (“hoo-hoo”), and, most notably, the Marvel Super Hero Academy.

The idea behind this high-tech command center — complete with docking bay doors and life-size video screens and super hero weapon displays — is that it’s “a shield bunker that got repurposed by the world’s greatest heroes to create an academy where we can teach kids how to be the heroes of the future,” says Tony Giordano, Show Director, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Programs within the academy include, for instance, Captain America teaching courage, teamwork, and standing up for what you believe in, all while helping kids build their own shield. Spider-Man might then appear and help kids perfect their spidey senses through games and web-slinging exercises. They can then take those lessons to crack codes, complete villain dossiers, and, most awesomely, use them in a larger-than-life video game.

“For one program, Black Widow appears and teaches that you don’t have to be super to be a hero,” Giordano says. “We have a giant system that has a bungee cord so it’s like a laser grid. They have to go underneath the laser and if they hit (it), the alarm goes off and the whole room lights up. So that’s the stealth and dexterity part. It’s very active; there’s not a lot of passiveness to this. It’s not ‘we’re gonna teach you how to be a super hero.’ It’s ‘Get up — let’s do this!’”

“Find out what happens to solid water when it gets warm”
Dory’s Reef (Deck 9)

The top pool deck has been redesigned every wet step of the way, but Dory’s Reef makes the biggest splash. Within this glass-enclosed splash zone, both Dory and pink octopus Pearl take turns squirting water at toddlers, as do a number of other floor-bound (and hidden) spouts. Parents can monitor their kids from outside the glass (right next to the AquaLab pool) or venture inside and hope reef-revelers don’t get too tipsy with the water buckets. But c’mon — when in summer, do as the frozen things do.

“There’ll be actual real live people / It’ll be totally strange”
Frozen, A Musical Spectacular (Deck 4)

Exclusively aboard the Disney Wonder in the Walt Disney Theatre, “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” tells the classic story from the animated feature “Frozen” and is presented like never before with an innovative combination of traditional theatrical techniques, modern technology and classic Disney whimsy. (Matt Stroshane, photographer)So that’s why every Frozen song is simultaneously playing in my head!
Disney Wonder does have the only stage on the planet showing this all-new, live-action musical, but “totally strange” isn’t the right phrase here at all. The story that movie-goers adore is faithfully told (and sung) here, with imaginative devices spanning from puppets and projection to transforming sets and stage-broadening swirling storms all bringing the beloved animation to something even larger than life.

“I think the hardest thing was to create a production that truly blended the line between scenic and costume, between puppet and puppeteer, between scenery and projected image,” said Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Executive Kevin Eld just before the show’s at-sea premiere last week.
The ensuing magic is much better experienced than read about, but if the amazed eyes of 3-year-olds in Elsa dresses and seasoned travel writers are any indications, the best phrase to describe it isn’t “totally strange.” It’s “true love.”

Monday Mantra

Heavenly…Heavenly…Heavenly…

One of San Juan’s most divine hotels started as a Carmelite convent

Now, here’s an eye-opener:  Before sailing from San Juan last week, I spent an extraordinary night in a convent.

I’d wager that few who know me would believe I’d willingly enter a convent but when you’re talking El Convento, they’d be be ever so wrong.

El Convento is a small, luxury hotel located on Cristo Street in Old San Juan, directly adjacent to the Plaza of the Nuns and across the street from San Juan Cathedral.  The place has a ton of history.  Originally built in 1651, it housed Carmelite nuns for 252 years before closing its doors in 1903, laying vacant for a decade and then gasping for breath as a retail store, dance hall, a flophouse, and other unsavory incarnations.  After decades of failure, El Convento was marked for the bulldozer until a 1957 renewal program headed by the heir to the Woolworth fortune acquired the property from the Diocese of San Juan for $250,000 and transformed it into a deluxe hotel. Since its reopening in 1962, the property has attracted celebrities like Rita Hayworth, George Hamilton, Pablo Casals, and Ethel Merman and is designated the official guest house of the island’s government for visiting heads of state.

cuervosanjuanconv2_img_0731Let me backtrack a second here. I discovered El Convento about 30 years ago, coming across it while wandering around Old San Juan during a cruise-ship visit.  I was attracted to the Spanish decor, arched corridors, and serenity of the place and have spent every call since at the property’s restaurant and bar, set amid lush gardens and a mystical courtyard with a 300-year-old Spanish fruit tree spreading its branches above.  So when I learned that my Viking Star cruise would sail from San Juan, I figured it was time to don my habit, arrive a day early, and spend the evening before sailing at El Convento.

If I hadn’t been taught by nuns at Catholic school (all of whom pretty much convinced me that I’d burn in Hell forever for wearing too much eye shadow and chewing gum in class), I’d probably believe that it just might be the kind spirit of those prayerful Carmelite sisters that’s responsible for the caring and giving nature of every employee of El Convento.  After a sampling of the restaurant’s new menu, a delightful Puerto Rican–inspired selection, I’d proclaim the cuisine divine and the bar’s mojitos (I had a regular one and a passion-fruit variety) nothing short of glorious…although I’m still picking passion-fruit seeds out of my teeth.

The next time you’re blessed enough to visit Old San Juan, climb the hilly cobblestone path to Christo Street and immerse yourself in the art-filled splendor of El Convento.  It’s a heavenly choice for a pre- or post-cruise stay or even just a blissful meal and a couple of mojitos.

Olé!

Harvest Caye Welcomes First Cruise Passengers

Cruise News – Nov. 18, 2016

Harvest Caye, the cruise industry’s newest private island port of call in southern Belize, officially welcomed its first cruise passengers when Norwegian Dawn arrived from New Orleans on November 17, 2016.

nclh-harvest-caye-harvest_landshark_poolLocated just one mile off shore, Harvest Caye offers Caribbean cruisers an authentic Belizean experience that highlights the country’s beauty and nature, along with resort-style amenities including a 15,000-square-foot pool and private luxury beach villas; a variety of eco-activities and interactive wildlife programs; and a cross-island zip line.

With its close proximity to the mainland, Harvest Caye also offers easy access to a variety of adventure excursions. The resort-style port of call, developed by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH), is the only port in Belize that features a cruise ship pier for guest convenience and comfort.

nclh-harvest-caye-tony_0492“We have worked closely with the government of Belize to ensure that that this spectacular destination was authentic for our guests, provided economic opportunities for the local community, and preserved and protected Belize’s incredible natural beauty,” said Frank Del Rio, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

Colin Murphy, Senior Vice President of Destination and Strategic Development for NCLH led a ribbon-cutting ceremony and official grand opening, where he was joined by the Honorable Manuel Heredia, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation for Belize; Honorable Edmond Castro, Minister of State for National Emergency Management for Belize; and Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, wife of Belize’s Prime Minister Dean Barrow.

nclh-harvest-caye-entrance_0728“We have embarked on an unprecedented and incomparable journey,” said Heredia. “The growth in cruise tourism over the past 20 years proves that Belize is a destination of choice for those seeking adventure, a host of natural wonders, and most importantly friendly and hospitable people.”

Cruise passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy Harvest Caye on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Western Caribbean itineraries, as well as on select Caribbean sailings on Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises in Winter 2017 and Fall/Winter 2018.

Five Favorite Shows to See aboard Harmony of the Seas

“We want to impress, we want to show off, but in the end, we really just want to entertain,” said Nick Weir, Royal Caribbean International’s Vice President of Entertainment, who oversees the cruise line’s onboard entertainment and guest activities, as well as Royal Caribbean Productions, the in-house department that creates, produces, and manages the line’s entertainment operation at sea.

And when it comes to the shows aboard Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Harmony of the Seas, impressing and entertaining go hand in hand. From original production shows to unique versions of classic shows and activities, it’d be impossible to not stand up and clap at the end of these five favorite shows on board.

Grease

Go Greased Lightning! — and so many other favorite songs in this unique version of this popular cult classic. But what makes Harmony of the Seas’ version stand out, Weir explains, is that Royal Caribbean had to secure rights from both the Broadway musical and the 1978 hit movie in order to feature the favorite songs and original dance moves from each. Add an amazing cast, state-of-the-art lighting, and high-tech automation to bring your favorite scenes to life, and it’s impossible not to sing along to the classics from “Summer Nights” to “You’re the One That I Want.”

The Fine Line show in the AquaTheater on board Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas

The Fine Line

The Fine Line is both extreme and extraordinary and will continually leave you asking yourself, “How can they do that?” Performed in the ship’s AquaTheater, the show features amazing high-flying feats, stunts, and acrobatics both in and out of the water. From high diving to tightrope walking, spinning and synchronized swimming, performers soar from two 10-meter Olympic-height diving boards and stun crowds with their brave performances.

1887

The Ice show "1887"Using some of the most stellar examples of high-resolution video projection technology, 1887 was inspired by the city of Paris and French author Jules Verne in this tale of love and adventure. Performed in Studio B, the ice show is a journey of time and space and uses incredible technology to depict the detailed scenes. Weir says to watch for the refill/refreeze sequence as well as the high-resolution 3D graphics that create a perfectly simulated real world environment.

Columbus The Musical!

Columbus The Musical in the Royal Theatre.Meet the other Columbus in this original production, which tells the story of Christopher Columbus’ down-on-his-luck distant cousin, Marvin, who sets sail on a wacky voyage of discovery to claim his own place in history. Check out the massive boat that is truly a modern stage marvel, and, of course, the flying sharks and tap dancing cheeseburgers. You’ll just have to see it to believe it.

Escape the Rubicon

Royal Caribbean International's Harmony of the Seas, the world"s largest and newest cruise ship, previews in Southampton. Puzzle BreakOk, it’s not a stage show, but when it comes to entertainment, it’s all the rage. As “escape rooms” are popping up across the country, why wouldn’t Royal Caribbean jump on the trend? Escape the Rubicon brings up to 12 participants at a time in a room where they have to work together and use clues to solve puzzles and ultimately escape the room. Partnering with escape room specialists, Puzzle Break in Seattle, this onboard version uses high-tech design to create a steam-powered starship that truly puts participants in the heart of the action as they go against the clock to escape in 60 minutes or less.
