Shaq Brings Great Food and Fun to Carnival

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 13, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

UPDATE: Carnival recently announced Big Chicken will be one of the dining options on board the new Carnival Mardi Gras!

He spent well over a decade dominating the hardwood courts of the NBA, but now international star of sport, film and music Shaquille O’Neal is setting his sights on a new endeavor, eating good at sea! Carnival Cruise Line announced that it’s newly transformed ship Carnival Radiance will feature Big Chicken, a restaurant inspired by the basketball star’s love of great food and a good time. The menu will feature a mouth-watering variety of fried chicken sandwiches and fries, with flavors to match Shaq’s gigantic personality, all included with the price of the cruise.

From Basketball to the Table

O’Neal opened his first land-based Big Chicken restaurant in Las Vegas in late October of 2018.  The onboard adaptation of Big Chicken featured on Carnival Radiance will be among the many food, dining and entertainment innovations incorporated into the 102,000-ton ship following a $200 million refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain, in 2020.

Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, explained why Shaq was the perfect partner for the onboard restaurant.

“Shaq has brought so much to our brand as Chief Fun Officer and we are always looking for ways to expand on this wonderful relationship and provide our guests with new ways to Choose Fun,” she said. “Knowing his passion for food and fun, we’re thrilled to work with Shaq to bring the first Big Chicken at sea aboard the totally transformed Carnival Radiance.”

The big man himself was excited to bring some more fun to an already awesome cruise ship.

“As Chief Fun Officer, I want to bring even more fun to every aspect of a Carnival cruise, including what guests eat,” said O’Neal. “Big Chicken has been a dream of mine and now that our land-based restaurant is open, it’s only natural to bring it to sea, as well. I’m really excited that Carnival Radiance guests will be able to enjoy my own delicious creations alongside all the other great food offerings on board.”

Carnival Radiance Upgrades

Big Chicken is among the many new culinary and beverage offerings that will be available on Carnival Radiance when it debuts in 2020.  Other outlets include Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse developed by Food Network star and longtime partner Guy Fieri, a classic American steakhouse called Fahrenheit 555, the Cucina del Capitano family-style Italian restaurant, and the Caribbean-inspired RedFrog Pub.  An expansive new WaterWorks aqua park featuring the new AquaTunnel slide as well as a SportSquare open-air recreation complex with a suspended ropes course will be added, as well. All of the ship’s staterooms will be renovated with a tropical color palette and striking new décor.

Keepin’ It Cool at Martini Bar & Crush

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 12, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

How often do you get to feel cool? At Celebrity Cruise Line’s famed Martini Bar & Crush, keeping things cool (literally) is always a top priority. At this martini bar, you’ll find a classy twist on traditional martinis using only top quality spirits and ingredients. You don’t have to be James Bond to order your drink shaken, not stirred at the hottest ice bar at sea!

Martinis: An Experience

Grey Goose Martini There’s something inherently classy about sipping a martini. Perhaps it’s the stylish glass with it’s long stem and cone-shaped vessel which make you feel like a Hollywood star at a black tie gala. Undeniably sophisticated, impeccably cool. However, looks aside, a classic martini may not be ideal for a guest who’s looking for something a bit more fun, festive and flavorful to really cap off their vacation, but that’s where Martini Bar & Crush can help!

At Martini Bar & Crush, those looking for an out of the box experience with their cocktails are in luck. Onboard Celebrity Cruise Line, it’s the only place to go for the best signature martinis made from only premium spirits like Bombay Sapphire Gin and Grey Goose Vodka. The ice-topped bar may be frozen, but the drinks are some of the hottest at sea!

The perfect martini looks a little different to everyone, but what remains the same is a high quality spirit in each glass. A classic martini is made with gin, vermouth and an olive, but variations of the drink using vodka are more popular now than ever before.

There’s nothing wrong with a classic, featuring Grey Goose Vodka, Noilly Prat Vermouth and an olive. You can even make it dirty with a splash of olive juice or take your tastebuds for a ride with the Tropitini: Grey Goose Vodka, Bacardi Limon, blue curacao, pineapple juice and an orange slice.

Grey Goose Dirty Martini

Another unique offering is the Sapphire French 75, a concoction of Bombay Sapphire Gin, fresh lemon juice and simple syrup all topped off with a splash of champagne. Each martini is handcrafted by bartenders who know the ropes when it comes to finding everyone’s unique tastes and curiosities.

If you’re someone with a sweet tooth, then the dessert martinis are a must try. The Banana Split Martini features Bacardi 8 Rum, muddled strawberries, banana schnapps and whipped cream for an authentic ice cream parlor taste. If chocolate is more to your taste, you can’t miss the Black Forest Martini. A delightful mix of Grey Goose Cherry Noir, Godiva Chocolate Liquor and maraschino cherry juice all topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup, the Black Forest Martini is a great way to get your sweet fix without ordering that piece of cake!

What if I Can’t Choose?

The bartenders on board Celebrity Cruise Line know they mix up some awesome martinis and that can make it hard to choose the one you like best. Enter the Martini Flight. It’s a tasting selection of six of the bar’s most popular martinis including the Classic Martini, Raspberry Lemonade Martini, Lychee Martini, Peartini, Sapphire London Club Martini and a passenger favorite, the Blue Martini, which features Grey Goose Vodka, Hpnotiq liquor and white cranberry juice.

Which one is your favorite? Cruise with Celebrity to find out!

Adventure Unbridled: A Galapagos Expedition

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 12, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As she glides through the brilliant turquoise waters of Gardner Bay, there’s already a crowd forming along the top deck of Celebrity Xpedition. They’ve gathered for the sea lions.

Weighing in at around 600 pounds and prone to guttural barks and yelps, these salty dogs are a staple of any trip to the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador’s west coast. Lackadaisical is an appropriate word to describe the hulking masses as they roll around the beach chirping at one another, but they’ve certainly captured the attention of those on board the ship.

Galapagos

Celebrity Xpedition | Photo: Celebrity Cruises

Excited for their first full day of adventure on board Celebrity Cruise’s 7-night Galapagos Outer Loop Itinerary, the group on board Celebrity Xpedition turns from the sea lions to examine their gear while attendants prepare the skiffs to head ashore. The real adventure starts with landfall.

A Raucous Beginning

Galapagos

Exploring the Galapagos | Photo: Celebrity Cruises

It must have been quite the sight when the first of the 19 Galapagos Islands burst forth from the ocean enveloped in a cloud of steam and smoke, spitting smoldering chunks of molten rock high in the sky then crashing to the waves below. From amidst this utter chaos, these marvelous islands were born.

Millions of years later, the island chain’s tumultuous beginnings are evident everywhere you look. The landscape, scarred by eons of flowing magma, is home to life in all shapes and sizes, prevailing all these years despite the unpredictable volcanic environment. Famed naturalist Charles Darwin found never-ending curiosities in the flora and fauna unfettered by the destructive arm of humanity and the opportunity to follow in his footsteps is more an option now than ever before.

Galapagos

The Comically Named Blue-footed Booby and it’s famous blue feet

The Galapagos Outer Loop Itinerary from Celebrity Cruises tours the outer rim of the Galapagos Islands, making stops at 12 ports of call, each offering something new and exciting to explore. The voyage ends with a final stop at Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, home to the National Park Service Tortoise-Breeding Center and the Charles Darwin Research Station.

People who tour the Galapagos are undoubtedly interested in it’s geologic features, but also the opportunity to see members of the animal kingdom not found anywhere else. The islands, being so remote, feature life developed as nature intended. The ancient Giant Tortoise plods along without a predator, other than man, to fear. Blue-footed boobies, comical in looks as well as name, dive into the waves with incredible deftness to catch fish. And of course, there’s the Darwin Finches, the term for several species of small bird on which Darwin set the foundation for his Theory of Evolution. Each species thrives in the constantly evolving volcanic landscape thanks to a single principle coined by Darwin; survival of the fittest.

Expedition Cruising: Present and Future

Galapagos

A suite view | Celebrity Cruises

Expedition cruising isn’t like a normal cruise vacation.Large ships simply cannot cruise the same itineraries, making for a very different cruise experience. Instead, smaller ships, chock full of exploration equipment, traverse exotic locales with ease. Passengers are privileged to get closer to their surroundings and that makes for an unforgettable adventure.

Expedition cruising is not “roughing it” by any stretch of the imagination. Celebrity Xpedition, holding just 100 passengers, has all the amenities we’ve come to expect from a luxury cruise; room service, in-suite dining, massage services, plush bathrobes and even a gym. Imagine a journey of exploration and discovery, but with accommodations that rival any five star hotel and you have a voyage aboard Celebrity Xpedition.

However, there’s a new vessel on the horizon seeking to transform the way people experience this incredible island chain; Celebrity Flora.

Celebrity Flora

Billed as a revolutionary turning point in ship design, performance and luxury, Celebrity Flora is set for launch in May of 2019. She was built for the Galapagos, combining unparalleled comfort with high-end adventure amenities allowing guests to get closer to the diverse environment of the Galapagos.

Naturalists from Galapagos National Park mingle with passengers for the entire cruise to answer questions and host lectures which teach guests more about this new and exciting world they’ve immersed themselves in. Every stateroom on board the ship is a suite and the menus are all crafted by the cruise line’s Michelin-starred chef. When it comes to luxury travel, this ship will be difficult to top.

Onboard Celebrity Flora, adventure wont be far. Are you ready to explore?

Dining with Virgin Voyages: It’s SeaLicious!

by Judi Cuervo November 8, 2018
written by Judi Cuervo

Oh yeah. Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady is about to blow your notion of a traditional cruise right out of the water.

Last night, at an event at The Altman Building in New York City, a few of us got a taste (literally and figuratively) of the Virgin Voyages experience (not to mention a performance by rock legend Joan Jett to end the evening) and let me assure you, folks, it rocks.

Sure, we’ve already heard about Squid Ink, the industry’s first tattoo parlor at sea and how Cuba will be among the ports Scarlet Lady will visit during her inaugural season but last night, Tom McAlpin, president and CEO of Virgin Voyages had this group of jaded travel professionals cheering—no lie—as he announced the “rebellious twists” that will make Virgin Voyages “different by design.”

Virgin Voyages

“No nickel and diming!”  That triggered the first cheer…and the happy roars increased in excitement and intensity as McAlpin revealed that Scarlet Lady will shatter the typical on board experience in some pretty significant ways.  Sodas and waters will be complimentary.  Fitness classes will be complimentary.  No assigned seatings.  No fancy dress.  No main dining room and no wasteful buffets!

That’s right!  No main dining room or buffet!  Instead, there will be 20 diverse eating establishments on board, some operating 24 hours a day and each with a bar located within the establishment.  The restaurants will include The Wake, a nautical spot at the stern of the ship featuring floor to ceiling windows, the “elevated Mexican” Pink Agave, The Pizza Place, the Italian Extra Virgin, the outdoor 24-hour Dock, The Test Kitchen, The Galley, the wildly wonderful, Razzle Dazzle (wait until you see the “hallucinogenic” design!) and many more.

And—get this—NONE of them will carry a pesky surcharge!

Virgin Voyages Hospitality

From the moment guests arrived at The Altman Building, it was obvious this was no staid little press event.  Strobe lights flashed.  Music pounded.  Artistically created hors d’oeuvres were offered and an open bar supplemented the champagne and wines being passed.  A scantily-clad young man lounged in a giant martini glass and, in the corner, a trio of mimes sporting bold black and white stripes posed with guests who wanted an op art commemorative of the evening.

Even the press conference that preceded dinner wasn’t the typical quiet affair.  Or maybe it was until the announcement of the Korean restaurant planned for Scarlet Lady brought McAlpin’s talk to a screeching halt as a gang of waiters appeared from nowhere bearing shots of a popular Korean drink.

Virgin Voyages

Fried Chicken Sandwich | Photo: Judi Cuervo

If you’re a cruise veteran like me, you’ve been called to dinner by cruise director announcements, chiming bells and xylophones but I’m willing to bet you’ve never been called to dinner by a troop of drag performers who, through the evening would entertain us with slightly naughty music and humor.   Last night’s dinner—a tasting menu of the treats in store for guests at the flamboyant Razzle Dazzle—was a visual explosion of creatively styled dishes, drinks, desserts and, certainly, entertainment.  From the coconut milk infused rainbow sprinkled Fairy Bread to the crazy cobb salad intense with bacon and blue cheese, the whimsical chick-pea-za in its own little pizza box and the succulent fried chicken sandwich (or egg on English, a vegan selection) dishes were dazzling and delicious.  And the drinks…did I mention the drinks?  After the Filthy Bloody Harry, Yaaaasss Queen and the lovely wines served, it’s not surprising that I can’t remember.

And don’t get me started on dessert.  Pluck a rainbow churro from one of the umbrellas placed around the room, pick up a boozy chocolate cookie, or a tart ube (purple yam) ice cream cone!  Razzle Dazzle might be a healthy dining choice aboard Scarlet Lady (that can be made naughty with the addition of stuff like meats) …but based on the dishes I tried last night, you’d never know it!

Virgin Voyages promises to shake things up and break rules in cruise ship dining and last night they proved that not only will they do it, but they’ll do it in a very delicious way!

Ocean Cay Enters Final Phase of Construction

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 8, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

MSC Cruises’ private island is another step closer to completion. The first trees were planted on Ocean Cay this week, what was a sand extraction site, in preparation of the island’s opening next year. MSC Cruises is in the process of creating a sea bed around the island, which will soon be populated with vibrant marine life.

Ocean Cay’s Transformation

The island’s clean-up process was quite expansive, with over 500 tons of industrial waste and scrap metal removed. Sustainability is a big concern for MSC, who worked with the goal of creating a protected paradise and restoring the natural coral around the island. The cruise line worked closely with Bahamian environmental experts, environmental auditors and other entities to ensure the best environmental practices were followed during construction. Plans are also underway for a marine laboratory to be situated on Ocean Cay, which will research climate change-resistant coral in hopes of providing insights to similar island habitats.

MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago had a chance to visit the island and view it’s progress.

“It was a very special moment to be on the island together with the team that has been working non-stop on this incredible project to see how our vision is starting to take shape. Words cannot convey the unbelievable natural beauty of our island, and it is only when you have stood there for yourself, surrounded by nothing but beautiful ocean with nothing else on the horizon, that you can really understand what we are accomplishing here” he said. “I can’t wait to welcome in one year’s time our first guests to this truly magical place, a one-of-a-kind island experience that will set new standards for a private island experience in the Caribbean.”

Grand Plans for Ocean Cay

In order to create the lush, tropical paradise guests are expecting, adding 75,000 native shrubs and plants is in the works including more than 60 types of indigenous Caribbean trees, grasses, flowers and shrubs. Work on over 100 environmentally-friendly structures will also begin soon, which will include bars and restaurants as well as housing for employees and staff who will live on the island.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve will open November 2019 with four MSC Cruises ships calling at the island on different days. More information about the guest experience will be revealed in the coming months.

Ahoy! Let’s Hunt Some Treasure

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 7, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

From shore, Polly-L looks more like an oil rig than a ship. Her black stanchions rise high above the water, dwarfing even the flag pole which sits atop the living quarters. The legs, which lift the working deck up out of the water, makes it easier for the crew to do what they’ve set out to do; find buried treasure.

Polly-L and her crew made a quick stop in Boca Raton this week before heading down to the waters off Key West to explore the wreck of the Santa Margarita, a ship that’s spent nearly 400 years waiting in the warm shallow waters of the keys. Porthole Cruise was lucky enough to get a tour of the ship and learn a little more about what it takes to be a professional treasure hunter.

21st Century Treasure Hunting

Treasure

Polly-L in Boca Raton

Forget what Robert Louis Stevenson wrote. “X” never, ever marks the spot.

However, that doesn’t seem to bother the crew of Amelia Research and Recovery on board Polly-L, who spend weeks, even months at a time living and working on board one of the most environmentally friendly ocean salvage and recovery ships in service today.

The ship is entirely self-sustaining with a desalinator, generators and more, only returning to shore when fuel runs low. Once they settle in the area of a shipwreck, the ship’s massive blowers push sand away from the area and divers explore the newly cleared area with metal detectors for items of importance. On a good day, the team may uncover bits of wood and metal spikes which once held a ship together. On a great day, it could be a clump of gold coins fused together by centuries of oxidation or a bar of silver weighing 80 pounds. Everyday is a new adventure with unlimited discovery potential and that’s just how the crew likes it.

Treasure

The Bridge aboard Polly-L

For the Love of the Find

Treasure

From Left to Right: Brian, Scott and Mike on board Polly-L

In the summer of 1715, a fleet of 12 Spanish ships, heavily laden with gold, silver, emeralds and more, departed from Cuba. 11 of them wrecked in a hurricane just a week later 500 miles later off the coast of modern day Vero Beach, FL.

A billion dollars in treasure lost for centuries in the shallow, sandy waters of South Florida until a family by the name of Fisher began finding the wrecks and hauling millions in treasure back onto solid ground. The Fisher family, led by Mel Fisher, is perhaps America’s most famous treasure hunting clan and they paved the way for crews like the team on board Polly-L to continue the search for history lost.

While many may be blinded by the shiny allure of gold and silver, the team at Amelia Research and Recovery have more at heart than a pile of gold coins. You don’t get into treasure hunting to get rich, the crew is quick to explain. Understanding history is at the forefront of their discovery, just read the ship’s mission:

To be the vessel and crew to locate, document and recover the shipwrecks of the Spanish Fleet from the year of loss 1715 for the purpose of historical record & public knowledge.

Grab your metal detectors and hit the beach, you might find something worth looking for!

Cruising with Teens; Here’s the Scoop

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 7, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Little kids may appear to have the advantage on cruising with dedicated children’s programs, but tween and teens also have spectacular programs that are geared for their ages. You won’t have to worry about them being bored while they are hanging out with their new friends. With these six tips, you can make sure your older child enjoys cruising as much as they did when they were little.

1. Show up for the Meet and Greet

The first day of cruising is not the like the first day of kindergarten, but parents do need to quickly stop in and finalize all the check-in paperwork for your teenager. Yes, even if they are 15 years old and are really embarrassed to have you bring them to the event; the counselors want to do last-minute parent approval checks, for food allergies and basic medical care, before letting your teen in the group. This safety procedure takes less than five minutes, and then you can escape back to your favorite show.

RELATED: Carnival Helping At-Risk Teens Through the Power of Music

2. Pay Attention to Open Times and Locations

11 a.m. dodgeball will not be in the main meeting room; it will traditionally be held on an upper, open floor. This and other information you can find out from the schedule of events for your teenager. It is important to note that teen activities are not held all day long like they are for little kids; the teen activities often open around 12 p.m. or later on port days.

3. Pre-Schedule Your Teenager’s Curfew

“Aww, Mom!! Why can’t I stay up to 1 a.m. for the dance party?” you might be hearing on day two of your cruise. Each parent knows how late their children can stay up safely, so it is crucial to pre-schedule your teenager’s curfew before the cruise to ensure you won’t have a grouchy teen the next day.

4. Age-Appropriate Games and Movies

Sitting on a lounge chair and reading a book is probably not your teenager’s favorite activity, so most cruise lines offer an X-Box, PlayStations, Wii, and movie times to keep your teenager engaged during the slower times of the sea days when most adults are in shopping seminars and trivia.

5. Late Night Snacks

What are parties without snacks? On themed nights, your teenager might be treated to chips and salsas, popcorn, and sodas! One cruise line even made Strawberry and Piña Colada smoothies for their events. These fun little perks of being an older child are what makes cruising so much fun.

6. Themed Nights and Dance-offs

Can your child bust a move? With dance-party nights and occasional group classes offered by the ship’s professional dancers, teenagers have a fun option of learning a new dance. Some cruise lines even allow the kids to show off their new skills on the final night of the cruise. Watching your child do the Whip and Nae Nae with 12 of his friends can be a memory to last a lifetime!

11 Reasons To Set Sail On Crystal Symphony

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 6, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

An icon of the ultra-luxury category in cruising, the Crystal Symphony is a 51,044-ton vessel with 848 berths, reduced from 922 during a redesign in 2017. The re-imagining resulted in more space per passenger: a 64.7 space ratio (the enclosed space per passenger measured in cubic feet) which is one of the highest in the industry and oh, so spacious! This spaciousness and a guest-to-crew ratio of 1.49 make you think “you have arrived” in more ways than one from the moment you board (and yes, you have!). Her refurbishment in the fall of 2017 also added new features including open seating dining and new culinary offerings as well as technological advances like interactive cabin televisions with free movies and documentaries, plus enrichment lectures live and on demand.

Here are 11 reasons why the Crystal Symphony is music to my ears:

1) The ambiance of the ship is contemporary and chic, elegant and refined but not stuffy. Light and cool color palettes with lots of blues, creams and whites make for pleasant, airy interiors like in the two-deck central Atrium decorated in earth tones with a sculpture of graceful ballet dancers and a water feature. The Atrium and areas like the lovely Palm Court, where themed afternoon teas are held, are spaces that invite guests to come in and stay.

RELATED: Exceptional Adventures Await With Crystal Cruises

2) The all-inclusive nature is a special treat – to be able to walk up to one of the bars and lounges and order a beverage without having to be signing checks is liberating.

Crystal Symphony

3) The formal and casual restaurants are a foodie’s delight. They include Waterside, the main dining room serving modern and traditional international cuisine (two menus are featured each evening and they change daily – one with modern dishes like venison medallions with wild mushroom spring rolls, and another one with classics such as steaks and chops) and an extensive wine list. Waterside has an abundance of tables for two and offers open seating between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The Marketplace is a casual buffet style restaurant, featuring an open kitchen concept and indoor/outdoor dining. The Marketplace becomes a Churrascaria in the evenings with a fun Brazilian steakhouse concept featuring grilled seafood and meats served by “gauchos” – the “feijoada” (black bean and sausage soup was delicious). The Trident Bar & Grill serves hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, sandwiches including a delectable grilled salmon sandwich, wraps, fries and fruit throughout the afternoon. Scoops, adjacent to the Trident Bar & Grill, offers ice creams, frozen yogurt and a variety of yummy toppings. And Silk Kitchen & Bar, near the Trident Bar & Grill, serves Chinese food family-style.

4) The alternative dining venues are perfect for special occasions. Umi Uma exclusively features menu selections created by Master Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Umi Uma (the restaurant’s name means seahorse in Japanese – the seahorse figures prominently in Crystal’s logo) has a stand-alone sushi bar and serves such delights as Nobu lobster and grilled wagyu beef rib eye steak. And Prego serves classic Italian cuisine in an intimate Venetian atmosphere, great for a special celebration or for planning the next day’s adventures, perhaps over antipasti, mushroom soup in a bread bowl, veal scaloppini and Piedmontese flan (chocolate-almond flavor).

5) Her varied itineraries roam the world and hit not just the big highlights but also offer opportunities for discoveries in off-the-beaten path destinations. During a recent Colonial Charms cruise from New York to Fort Lauderdale, the ship called at the de rigueur stops of Charleston and San Juan, but also at such highlights as Oranjestad, Aruba, with its Dutch influences and attractions including a butterfly farm dedicated to this lovely insect; less-visited Bimini, Bahamas, where the Resorts World Bimini Hilton with access via complimentary shuttle to miles of turquoise beaches was steps away from the tender pier; and Ocho Rios, Jamaica, where Dunn’s River Falls beckoned.

6) The stability of the Crystal Symphony is superb – when you look out of your restaurant’s windows and there are swells and white caps in the sea, the wine and water in your glasses are, however, perfectly still. She was built at Kvaerner Masa-Yards Turku, Finland in 1995 and her design and stabilizers do an impressive job for a comfortable ride.

7) The Spa with Technogym equipment and cardiovascular exercise equipment is good for guests like me who like to keep up their regimens during vacation. There is a weight room with free weights, weight machines and state-of-the-art Kinesis™ resistance training equipment and an exercise studio for high and low impact classes, yoga, Pilates, and other classes. An outdoor fitness garden with exercise machines on deck 8 is especially appreciated – even if you don’t use the machines, visibility is a reminder to exercise. And there is a 360-degree promenade on deck 7, and the Seahorse Pool is a lap pool.

8) And speaking of a comfortable ride: the accommodations are outstanding with lots of thoughtful touches: Egyptian cotton sheets, refrigerators with complimentary bottled water and soft drinks, 24-hour complimentary room service; flat-screen television; bathroom amenities including two hairdryers, slippers, ETRO bath products, and ETRO bathrobe and lightweight cotton kimono for each person; large closets with shoe rack, umbrella, personal security safe and beach tote. There is complimentary, unlimited Wi-Fi throughout. Penthouses and above categories also have butler service, including packing and unpacking services; walk-in closet; complimentary beer and wine, welcome champagne and complimentary in-room bar upon embarkation. Bathroom amenities in top accommodations include a full Jacuzzi bathtub with separate shower; free pressing upon request, and free shoe shine; Afternoon canapés and tea service, nightly hors d’oeuvre service, and evening room service from specialty restaurants.

Crystal Symphony

9)   The entertainment and enrichment programs are second to none. Broadway-style productions and headliner shows are presented twice each evening – a rarity on ships featuring open seating dinner. Enrichment includes the Crystal Visions Enrichment Program with lecturers on every voyage and The Creative Learning Institute, a hands-on seminar program. Other pastimes include karaoke; recent-release films in the Hollywood Theatre; the cocktail hour at the Crystal Cove with piano and string performances; the Avenue Saloon with a piano entertainer performing jazz and favorite tunes; themed teas, including the delicious Mozart Tea, with staff in period dress; complimentary dance classes; Crystal Ensemble of singers and dancers; Ambassador Hosts for dancing partners; and one of my favorite offerings: Los Angeles’ Magic Castle at Sea magicians.

10) The free self-service launderette is a convenient feature particularly on long itineraries for passengers like me who like to pack light and not incur laundry charges.

11)  The Volunteerism opportunities: the ship roams the globe and she offers one complimentary goodwill tour as part of Crystal’s You Care, We Care program during each voyage so guests who wish to give back can volunteer to help various charitable organizations. Crystal makes all the arrangements including free transportation. During our recent cruise, passengers were able to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston.

Look Past the Tourist Trap: Miami

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 5, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The city of Miami is home to a picture-perfect beach and raucous South Beach nightlife, but there’s a whole lot more to this place than meets the eye. From stellar restaurants to historical places, most don’t realize that Miami has something for everyone. On top of being a premier vacation destination, Miami also boasts one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, so if you’re a tourist, here are some can’t miss spots for your next vacation in the Magic City!

Manatee Bend Park

A Florida Manatee

Miami is home to plenty of fun critters of the land, sea and sky, but few as unique as the Manatee. These floating behemoths stick to the shallow brackish waters of the intracoastal which snakes its way through South Florida. Those looking to spot one of these gigantic sea cows should head north of downtown to Manatee Bend Park in Miami’s Little River district. Once an endangered species, manatees were often mistaken for mermaids among weary sailors after a long voyage. They can grow to 13 feet long and weigh well over 1,000 pounds, so they’re hard to miss!

The park has a seawall that makes peering into the shallow water for a glimpse at these cool animals easy for all ages. The park is conveniently located near the John F. Kennedy Causeway, so it’s only a quick ride for those staying in north Miami hotels like the Hampton Inn & Suites Miami Midtown.

Mac’s Club Deuce

We get it, when you come to South Beach you want to cut loose and enjoy a city known for its stellar nightlife and club scene. The allure of hotspot nightclubs like LIV, Soho Beach House or Story is obvious, but it’s Mac’s Club Deuce where Miami nightlife got its start way back in 1964. The oldest bar on Miami Beach, Mac’s is a dive where the price is right, the pool tables are waiting and the crowd is friendly. Chef, author and travel savant Anthony Bourdain was a fan, once telling Food & Wine magazine, “Even if you hate South Beach, this place singlehandedly makes a good argument for drinking in South Beach.”

Tucked on a side street between Ocean Drive and Washington Ave in the heart of South Beach, Mac’s is a great place to kick off your night or as a last stop as your evening comes to a close. The central location makes it an easy find for those staying at nearby South Beach hotels like the Hilton Bentley Miami/South Beach.

The Miami Circle National Landmark

With its neon glow and nightclubs that never close, South Beach has a reputation for glitz and glamour. However, once you leave Ocean Drive behind, Miami’s historical past comes into focus. Long before the “Mother of Miami” Julia Tuttle moved to the Sunshine State at the turn of the 20th Century, it was the Tequesta Indians who called the region home. The Miami Circle National Landmark is an archeological site uncovered in 1998 which dates back around 2,000 years. The site is a perfect circle with evidence of a structure built on the site, which archeologists say could point to religious or ceremonial significance.

Miami

The Miami Circle offers history and great views

Located along the mouth of the Miami River, the site offers fantastic views of the Miami River and the channel which heads out to sea. There’s also plenty of green space to spread out and enjoy an afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the Magic City. Guests staying at downtown hotels like the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Miami Brickell Downtown can head just a few blocks north to follow the River Walk Trail to the Miami Circle National Landmark site.

What’s the point of coming to a tropical paradise if you aren’t going to make your friends and family back home jealous? Your pictures of palm trees and crystal blue water are social media worthy, no doubt, but the Pérez Art Museum Miami is the place to check out for truly inspiring views. PAMM, as it’s called, features contemporary art inspired by the multinational city in which it resides. Exhibits rotate throughout the year and include everything from paintings and sculptures to music and performance art of all varieties. It’s location near popular downtown hotels near Port Miami like the Hilton Miami Downtown makes it a convenient stop for those heading to a waterfront dinner at one of the many restaurants dotting the Miami River district.

Rouge

When it comes to food, Miami is no slouch. While most are right to believe the Latin American influence has led to some great restaurants, Miami is a melting pot of culture from all over the world. At Rouge in North Beach, a blend of French and Moroccan cuisine comes complete with live jazz and gorgeous al fresco dining for an experience food-lovers will rave about. If all you know about Moroccan food is couscous, then Rouge is the perfect place to expand your culinary horizons. The restaurant feels like a set from the movie Casablanca with its intimate ambiance and authentic Moroccan sights, tastes and sounds. If you’re looking for romantic evening to start or end the perfect Miami vacation, Rouge should be at the top of your list.

Like every city, Miami has it’s tourists traps. But stick to the spots above and you’ll get a sense of what living in the Sunshine State is really all about!

Richard Branson Reveals First Virgin Voyages Destination

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 1, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Appearing as his usual casual self on the Virgin Voyages social media channels yesterday, Richard Branson made a much anticipated announcement; Virgin Voyages is headed to Cuba. The cruise line, whose first ship is set for launch in 2020, has promised a cruising experience unlike what’s currently available from other major cruise lines.

Sir Richard’s Secret

In the video posted to Virgin’s social channels, Sir Richard reveals that they’ve known for quite some time that the Scarlet Lady would make a call in Havana.

“Since we began Virgin Voyages, everybody has been anxiously wondering where we’ll sail” Sir Richard teased. “It’s a secret that I’ve had a really hard time keeping. I’m terrible at secrets anyway. So finally, I get to reveal just one of the destinations that our Scarlet Lady will visit.”

Branson continued to tease viewers for another moment with promises of sun, salsa dancing and incredible city nights before revealing Havana, Cuba as the port of call.

RELATED: Virgin Voyages’ Ship Finally Has a Name

Cuba has exploded in popularity among cruisers as more and more ships are making stops at the formerly distant island. Its position just south of major cruise ports like Port Everglades and PortMiami make it an attractive destination from a logistic sense as well.

About Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages announced previously that their first 2,770 passenger ship will be adults only, a change from other major cruise lines who offer family-friendly cruising. Scarlet Lady will feature all the standard luxuries of a modern day ship, but with Virgin’s unique flair and style. Passengers can enjoy the Crow’s Nest on top of the ship for sunrise and sunset yoga with a view that beats any yoga studio. The ship also comes complete with a number of restaurants, a spa, a boxing ring, full gym, a tattoo parlor and a pool that’s rumored to have a Venice Beach-like vibe.

Best Cruise Foods for an Energy Boost

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 1, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Food. It fuels our bodies to perform daily activities. Since cruise vacations are fun-packed with activities, both onboard and in destinations, you may need an energy boost to keep up from time to time.

Whether you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up or sustained energy for your vacation’s daily happenings, cruise ships provide many healthy options throughout the day. Here’s a list of cruise foods that will boost your energy and get you ready for fun days ahead:

Proteins

Fatty fish: Packed with omega fatty acids, salmon and tuna are delicious sources of lean protein. They boost your energy levels by reducing inflammation in the body, a common cause of fatigue. To get the most of it, choose wild-caught salmon, which has more D and B12 vitamins than the farm-raised alternative.

Feta cheese: Made from sheep’s milk or by combining it with goat’s milk, feta cheese packs B12 vitamin, and contains probiotics and minerals such as iron and magnesium. Sprinkle it over salads and omelets, stuff it in sandwiches and pastries, or add it to your cheese table.

Eggs: According to WebMD, “eggs contain the highest value for protein”, along with milk. Besides being a popular source of protein, eggs contain essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids, which fill up your stomach and sustain your energy level. To maintain its nutritional value, it is best to consume it boiled.

RELATED: Vitamin Sea: Dietary Restrictions

Nuts and Seeds

A handful of nuts and seeds packs enough nutrients to provide an energy boost before a demanding activity such as a long walk or a more intense workout. Almonds, walnuts, cashews, pumpkin and sunflower seeds are popular choices you are likely to find in the buffet.

Fruits

Oranges: Every breakfast commercial ever features a glass of orange juice for good reason. Antioxidant compounds found in oranges help battle fatigue and aging. Drink up or grab one to go!

Apples and bananas: These are phenomenal sources of fiber, vitamins and minerals. While bananas provide a quick boost of energy, apples deliver it slowly and continuously. Combining them throughout the day will keep you energized and full.

Veggies

Everyone knows leafy greens are good for your body. Spinach, kale, cabbage and broccoli are crammed with vitamins and minerals, iron among them. Iron is responsible for delivering oxygen to the cells, preventing fatigue. Listen to your mom and eat your greens!

Carbs

Oatmeal: Starting the day off with hot oatmeal should give you enough energy to last until lunchtime. This whole grain cereal is another good source of iron, manganese and vitamins that promotes energy production. Plus, it is good for heart health. Try it also in cookies, bread or granola.

Beans: Beans deliver nutrition in all sizes, colors and shapes. Its fiber and antioxidants keep you fuller longer and help fight inflammation while promoting energy. Best sources include black and red kidney beans.

All these food choices contain antioxidants, vitamins (especially B12), minerals (particularly iron), and fatty acids. They are all-around nutritious and will fulfill your energy needs without crashing later. Eat smart!

5 Spots in the Florida Keys You Can’t Miss

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 31, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

The Florida Keys are a diverse group of islands. Each town is home to unique experiences and adventures. A drive down on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway is the perfect way to explore the region. We’ll take you on a tour of the can’t-miss spots in the Florida Keys.

Snorkel at Key Largo

The Keys have the only coral barrier reef system in the United States. Key Largo offers guests the perfect opportunity to explore by land or sea. The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a can’t-miss spot. This park is actually the first underwater preserve in the country. Visitors can take an excursion for a scuba diving or snorkeling adventure under the waves.

Catch a Fish in Islamorada

Islamorada lays claim to the title of the “Sportfishing Capital of the World.” Fishing aficionados flock to this town throughout the year. You can catch a fishing charter or find a guide that will take you on the water. Backcountry, reef, or offshore waters are guaranteed to give you the best fishing experience in the Keys. There is a reason Islamorada is home to the most saltwater fishing records in the world.

Visit Sea Turtles in Marathon

The Turtle Hospital is the only licensed veterinary turtle hospital in the world. This facility provides healthcare services strictly for sea turtles. Turtles who have been injured or showing signs of sickness from all over Florida are brought to the Hospital. Their goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release these creatures back into the wild. The Turtle Hospital is open for public tours. You can get a behind-the-scenes look at the hard work of these dedicated professionals.

Spot a Key Deer in Big Pine Key

The elusive Key Deer call home to the Lower Keys. Big Pine Key is the location of the Lower Keys’ National Key Deer Refuge. These endangered deer are easy to miss because of their small size. Big Pine Key is one of their favorite places to graze in the wild. You may see them hiding in the brush. Remember to keep your distance if you spot one though. They are a protected species and feeding them is illegal on the island.

Take a Bike Ride around Key West

The last stop on the Florida Keys tour is Key West. This city is the southernmost point in the continental United States. There is plenty to see and do in Hemingway’s old hangout. Many visitors rent bikes and pedal around the historic Old Town area. The pastel conch-style houses are great examples of Key West’s architectural beauty. Art galleries and local boutiques also dot the entire historical area. Key West’s laid-back attitude will put you in a relaxed mood. You’ll see why this city is the capital of the Conch Republic.

RELATED: Like a Local: Key West

The Florida Keys have been welcoming visitors with their warm waters and friendly communities. These can’t-miss spots give you a little taste of island life in the Keys. It’ll be hard to leave the Keys. You’ll want to be back for your next adventure.

5 Tips for Cruising out of Baltimore with Children

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 30, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Cruising with your children can be a fun time of making memories, or it can be a nightmare. The difference is some careful planning and knowing how to make your vacation extra-special. One of the unique benefits of cruising is that moms, dad, children, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even grandparents can spend quality time together. The vacation does not begin once you are on the ship; it begins much earlier. Here are five tips to enjoy cruising out of Baltimore, Maryland, and make it fun and exciting.

1. Enjoy Washington, DC

Just 45 minutes south of the Baltimore port is the nation’s capital of Washington, DC. This city is rich in American history, interesting monuments, the White House, and of course, the Smithsonian National Zoo! You and your family will love getting to see all the fascinating animals! Come early for short lines to see the famous Panda exhibit or the short (but, still very large!) Asian elephant.

RELATED: Like a Local: Baltimore

2. Remember, the Ship May be Late

It is no fun getting that early morning text from your cruise ship letting you know that the ship will not be arriving on time. Baltimore is one of these ports that may not achieve their early morning docking time. Why? Storms in the Atlantic can slow the ship down. Medical emergencies may divert the ship to another port temporarily. It takes about 10 hours for the ship to go up the Chesapeake Bay area so if they are any delays earlier in the cruise, it cannot make up speed through the bay.

If you get the dreaded text, try option #3 to use up the extra time.

3. Fort McHenry

Sometimes children just get too excited sitting in the hotel waiting or sitting in the vehicle for a long period. If you have an extra hour, consider checking out one of the local parks that are close to the port. Swingsets, see-saws, slides, and a little bit of running around can help get rid of those extra wiggles. Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is also right near the Baltimore cruise port and has plenty of green space to explore.

4. Go When You Can, Not When You Have To

The parking line for the port can be lengthy, and once you get in the queue, it is hard to get out and find the nearby restroom. So save yourself some trouble and have a mandatory restroom break before you start the wait.

5. Breathe!

In the excitement of seeing the ship, dealing with the craziness of trying to sort out carry-on luggage and which ones to drop off at the porters, and fighting kids in the back-seat of the minivan, it can be so overwhelming at the last minute. Stop for a few seconds and breathe! Trust that your times of pre-planning and packing were not wasted and (yes!) you are finally ready to board this ship for an amazing family vacation. Everything will work out, and soon you’ll be leaning back and working on your suntan in the perfect lounge chair!

3 Onboard Spa Treatments to Try on Your Next Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 30, 2018
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Aboard cruise ships, spa treatments are anything but ordinary. Dim lights, soothing sounds and pleasant smells are all expected in a spa experience. However, laying comfortably on a zero-gravity massage table, thermal suites inspired by Turkish and Roman baths, or a mindful living program, all overlooking deep blue waters…not your typical spa.

Ready to break away from the routine and take pampering to a whole new level? Book one of these must-have spa treatments. They are the epitome of profound relaxation.

RELATED: Is a Cruise Ship Onboard Spa Pass Worth It?

Zero Gravity Immersion Massage

Celebrity Cruise Lines hit it off the park with this 75-minute massage. Guests surrender to relaxation at an eight-positions massage table that produces a zero-gravity effect. Combining technology and traditional hand healing, therapists deliver “a choreographed massage” to release tension and improve body mechanics.

This is one of more than 50 services guests can get aboard Celebrity cruise ships, including acupuncture, BIOTEC anti-aging facials, and customized massage sessions for cancer patients. Many of Celebrity’s spa services are guest favorites and have been featured on ABC News, CNN Travel and Fodor’s Travel.

Mandara Spa Thermal Suites

Featured on Business Insider and ABC News, the Mandara Spa offer aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet is “luxurious, therapeutic and magical”. Besides special packages catered to kids and teens, select ships feature a Himalayan Salt Room that creates a healing space inspired by the natural salt caves of Eastern Europe.

Still, Mandara’s most impressive traits at sea are its two thermal suites. Heat and water pressure combine at the Hydrotherapy Courtyard, inspired by Turkish and Roman baths and featuring dry heat, steam chambers and monsoon-like showers. On the cold front, the Snow Paradise is set at -10°C to enhance blood circulation and the respiratory system.

Spa and Wellness

Onboard Spa

Seabourn takes the spa life seriously | Photo: Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn Cruise Line recently launched a mindful living program—the first of its kind—in partnership with Dr. Andrew Weil, world-renowned for its approach to holistic and integrative medicine. More than spa treatments, it delivers a holistic experience on board by integrating mind, body and spirit over a period of seven days. A coach or “guide” leads guests through daily yoga and meditation sessions, and guests attend seminars aimed at enhancing their wellbeing and awareness of how mind, body, environment and wellness are interconnected.

Make time for a spa treatment on your next cruise vacation and save your spot in advance. Although cruise ships accept walk-ins, subject to availability, you don’t want to be the person who gets to the spa super excited about a massage only to find out everything is booked.

To ensure a flawless spa experience on board, cruise lines recommend making spa appointments when booking the cruise trip—or shortly thereafter. Prior to your treatment, inform your therapist about any concern. Also, communicate your preferences regarding pressure, lighting, scents and temperature. This way, the therapist can set everything up to make you feel on cloud nine. Your mind, body and soul will thank you.

Trick or Treat … or Travel

by Judi Cuervo October 29, 2018
written by Judi Cuervo

The Monthly Mantra

Halloween, Ahoy! … Halloween, Ahoy! … Halloween, Ahoy!

I just finished the final Twix in the massive bag of assorted Halloween candy I bought — obviously, a bit too early — for my trick-or-treaters. I finished the Twizzlers yesterday, so if the kids don’t like Three Musketeers or Butterfingers, I’m really screwed.

There’s something a bit disturbing about Halloween. I’m not fond of kids coming to my home and shaking me down for anything — even if it’s a five-year-old dressed like a giant strawberry, looking only for a candy bar. Once the sun goes down, the cute little ones are replaced by people of all ages and sizes, so opening the door to a blood-splattered zombie, an alien, or a laser-gun-toting intergalactic warrior is even more unsettling.

For a frightfully good time, I prefer to get away from the doorbell and celebrate Halloween at sea! For one thing, there’s no question that the food will go far beyond Jell-O molds that look like brains, olives carved to resemble eyeballs, and chocolate spiders — and, for another, you can dress up! It’s not even necessary to squeeze a full costume into your luggage: sport a pair of fangs, don green face paint or wrap your head in a red-food coloring–soaked bandage and you’re good to go.

A Carnival Halloween | Photo: Rada Ursu/Carnival Cruise Line

A Carnival Halloween | Photo: Rada Ursu / Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line dives in, hook, line, and sinker, with a month-long line up of spine-tingling Halloween activities for both kids and adults: A pumpkin-patch deck party, costume crawls and contests and, my personal favorite, a Scary Chest Competition. Kids can even trick-or-treat on board … which makes me wonder if Carnival provides the candy or if I’m supposed to hand them a bottle of beer from my mini bar.

Disney Cruise Line begins its Halloween spook-tacular in September with Mickey’s Mouse-querade costume party, a magical pumpkin tree, haunted stories of the sea under the night sky, and a Nightmare Before Christmas Sing and Scream. And while that last one sounds like my definition of “horror,” guests can expect lots of candy, costumes, and fun.

Most cruise lines scare up their own brand of Halloween celebrations with ghoulish decorations and startling surprises. Royal Caribbean constructs a haunted mansion aboard some sailings and holds “howl at the moon” and “girl scream” competitions, while Norwegian celebrates with hair-raising movies, candy stations throughout the ship, and a Fright Night for adults.

But cruise guests seeking the ghostly and ghastly can have blood-curdling fun any time of year! If that’s your thing, you can investigate ghost tours in port cities like London, Savannah, Quebec City, and New York. Fans of The Walking Dead might book The Walker Stalker Cruise aboard Norwegian Pearl (February 21-25) — but do it NOW — it sells out quickly! And, for a dose of chilling reality, plan a visit to the notorious Angola Prison during a cruise up the Mississippi River aboard American Queen Steamship Company’s American Queen.

Happy Halloween, no matter where you’re celebrating!
