Carnival Revamps Specialty Dining and Breakfast Menus

Plus Reintroduces Baked Alaska

Cruise News – Nov. 30, 2017

As part of its ongoing effort to keep its culinary offerings fresh and exciting, Carnival Cruise Line is revamping the menus for several of its specialty dining venues and breakfast menus, as well as reintroducing Baked Alaska across the fleet.

The menus for Carnival’s steakhouses, Cucina del Capitano family-style Italian restaurants, delis, and main dining room breakfast offerings have undergone a transformation that results in a variety of new items that reflect lighter ingredients, updated preparation techniques, and attractive presentation.

In addition, Baked Alaska — a classic dessert made of cake and ice cream topped with meringue — is also being reintroduced after several years with uniformed waiters performing the time-honored tradition of parading the dessert throughout the dining room prior to service.

Cucina del Capitano antipastiThe updated steakhouse menus, which are currently available on three ships, feature appetizers such as Iced and Smoked Fresh Oysters with Apple Mignonette; Tuna Tartare with Yuzu Sphere and Avocado “Leche de Tiger”; Risotto with Crab, Mushroom, and Brown Butter; and Heritage Berkshire Pork Belly with Apple Walnut Preserve. These complement a selection of USDA prime steaks, including new items such as an A-5 Wagyu steak and lighter fare like Farmhouse Chicken with Roasted Honey Vinegar and Dover Sole Pan-Seared with Lemon Potato-Mousseline and Shallot Emulsion. Four additional ships are expected to get the new menus by early next year.

The new menu for Cucina del Capitano reflects the diversity of Italy’s culinary regions, with dishes like Branzino Al Forno in Crosta Dorata with tomatoes, stewed chickpeas, salmoriglio, and mushroom bark, along with Risotto Milanese with saffron and Parmesan cheese, Grande Braciola Di Maiale — a tomahawk pork chop with fennel pollen, shallots and crispy sage — and Costina Di Manzo Con Porcini with salsa verde and young tomato bruschetta. House-made burrata has been added to menus as well, with classic Italian favorites like chicken Parmesan, meatballs, and fried calamari also available. The new Cucina del Capitano menus are currently on three ships (Carnival Magic, Carnival Vista, and Carnival Breeze) with Carnival Sunshine expected to be updated next month.

Breakfast bowls in the main dining room

Breakfast menus in the main dining rooms are just as varied with options such as avocado toast; a Breakfast Bowl featuring kale, spinach, faro wheat berries, sesame seeds, feta cheese, raspberries, and a sunny side up egg; and fresh-baked Broccoli and Cheddar Egg Frittata. There’s also a Broken Egg Sandwich served panini-style with fried eggs, bacon, cheddar, greens, and hash browns; and a “Breakfast Board” with a soft boiled egg, house-made yogurt, seasonal jam, baby lettuce salad, pastrami, and grilled sourdough bread.

For those on the go, a new “breakfast express” is available on port days featuring orange juice, eggs, hickory-smoked bacon or sausage, and pastries, all “in and out” within 25 minutes. An assortment of traditional breakfast favorites such as French toast, pancakes and cereals is also offered. Thus far, 12 ships feature the new breakfast items with the balance of the fleet expected to receive the new menus by mid-2018.

The line’s delis have undergone a dramatic change as well, with an updated design and host of new choices, including seven sandwichesCarnival's Deli Sauerbraten Sandwich such as meatball, buffalo chicken, and The Cubano with roasted pork, ham, pickles, mustard, and Swiss cheese, along with Southwest chicken, falafel, and turkey wraps. Diners can also enjoy a sweet finish to their meal with a Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie baked fresh every morning.

Carnival is also re-branding its 24-hour pizzerias to Pizzeria del Capitano offering five kinds of hand-tossed, thin-crusted pies: Margherita, pepperoni, artisan-style quattro formaggio, mushroom, and prosciutto. The re-branded delis and pizzerias will be incorporated into additional vessels during scheduled dry docks.

Lastly, the popular Seafood Shack, which debuted on Carnival Vista last year and serves lobster rolls, fried clams, chowder, and other New England–inspired fare, has been expanded to nine additional ships.

Popular On-Air Personality Elvis Duran Named Godfather for Norwegian Bliss

Cruise News – Nov. 29, 2017

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that Elvis Duran, nationally syndicated radio and digital personality and on-air host of iHeartMedia’s top rated, “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show” will serve as godfather of its newest ship, Norwegian Bliss.

As godfather, Elvis will have an honorary role in the official ship christening ceremony on May 30, 2018, at Pier 66 in Seattle. The line’s 16th ship will sail weekly 7-day Alaska cruises during her inaugural summer season and, beginning in November 2018, will sail 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from PortMiami.

In the maritime world, it is a longstanding tradition to name a godparent of a new vessel and the honor is given to an individual who will officially christen a new ship, and remain in their role for the life of the ship.

While the ship is docked in Seattle on May 30, 2018, Elvis will join Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.’s president and CEO, Frank Del Rio, and Norwegian Cruise Line president and CEO, Andy Stuart, in the tradition of breaking a bottle of champagne against the ship’s hull and officially christening the vessel. Elvis joins the family of high profile godmothers and godfathers for the brand including Pitbull, Kim Cattrall, Reba McEntire, Rosie O’Donnell, Chinese pop star Wang Leehom, and the Radio City Rockettes.

Elvis Duran with Norwegian Cruise Line's Andy Stuart“Elvis Duran epitomizes the high-energy and liveliness that the ship represents and we’re very excited to have him join the family as godfather to Norwegian Bliss,” said Stuart. “As one of the most beloved radio hosts in history, Elvis’ commitment to entertainment and bringing laughter and joy to his listeners each day is exactly why we believe he is the perfect fit to represent Norwegian Bliss.”

Elvis Duran has become a household name in the industry since he began hosting the daily morning radio show on New York’s Z100 in 1996. Over the years, he has continuously shown his devotion to his listeners by seeking new ideas, fun games, and exciting interviews with celebrities. His radio career has spanned 30 years and today, the award-winning “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show” on WHTZ, New York’s Z100, is syndicated nationally by Premiere Networks on nearly 80 radio stations across the country and available digitally on iHeartRadio, reaching more than 10 million monthly listeners.

“I am honored to be named godfather for Norwegian Bliss,” said Elvis Duran. “This incredible ship and all the innovative activities on board, from the race track to Broadway shows, perfectly reflect the energy and excitement of our morning show and we are looking forward to bringing our loyal listeners along for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can’t wait until she arrives next May!”

5 Faves: Save Our Ships

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 28, 2017
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

How you can contribute to preservation efforts.

According to the website GivingTuesday.org, #GivingTuesday is “a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.” Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is meant to kick off the holiday season by encouraging charitable donations.

So today, we at Porthole Cruise Magazine wanted to share some ways that our fellow cruise-loving friends can give back to their favorite ships of yesteryear by contributing to their preservation efforts.

Queen Mary

Launched in 1934 and retired in 1967 after 1,001 trans-Atlantic crossings, Queen Mary lives on as a full-service hotel, historical landmark, and entertainment venue docked in Long Beach, California. Providing a unique glimpse into a bygone era when steamships were the most regal way to travel, Queen Mary staffers work closely with ship historians on various renovations and preservation projects, which you can support by becoming an annual member.

S.S. United States

SS United States departing NY City. Photo courtesy Charles Anderson, SS United States ConservancyUpon her delivery to the United States Lines in 1951, the S.S. United States was the most graceful, modern, powerful, and sleekest vessel in the world. In fact, the American public embraced the S.S. United States so much that she became known as “America’s Flagship.” In 1969, while undergoing her annual overhaul at Newport News, she was abruptly and permanently withdrawn from service. Following a succession of different owners, she remains docked at Pier 82 on Philadelphia’s Delaware River. As the owners of the S.S. United States, America’s National Flagship, the Conservancy leads the global effort to save this one-of-a-kind piece of American history. You can play a role in the rescue and restoration of the S.S. United States by donating and becoming a member.

S.S. Rotterdam

The S.S Rotterdam has a long and rich history after coming into service for Holland America Line as its flagship in 1959. “La Grande Dame” was constructed in Rotterdam, left Rotterdam, and is now back in Rotterdam. Since 2001, the Friends of Steamship Rotterdam (or the Steamship Rotterdam Foundation) has continued her activities including securing the ship’s lasting preservation and use in a culturally and historically responsible manner. You can support these efforts through financial support or volunteering. In addition, the S.S. Rotterdam is open to the public for hotel accommodations, restaurants, and tours.

Delta Queen

Built in 1926, Delta Queen is an American icon and National Historic Landmark. In 1966 she ran afoul of new legislation, the 1966 Safety of Life at Sea Act (P.L. 89-777), which forbids large passenger vessels to sail from a United States port if constructed primarily of wood. On April 4, 2017, the Senate passed legislation that exempts Delta Queen from the law. The bill now moves to the House where it needs to be approved as well in order for Delta Queen to be able to run again as cruise ship on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. In the meantime, Delta Queen is moored in Chattanooga and is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where you can donate to the campaign and stay updated on legislation.

S.S. Milwaukee Clipper

Launched December 22, 1904, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989, the steamship S.S. Milwaukee Clipper now resides in Muskegon, Michigan. Nicknamed the “Queen of the Great Lakes,” the 361-foot passenger and package freight steamer was the epitome of first class travel and sailed between Buffalo, New York, and Duluth, Minnesota, sailing through the late 1970s. Today, the S.S. Milwaukee Clipper Preservation is funded by tax-deductible gifts from individuals, grants, and businesses to preserve the legendary steamer. Restoration and maintenance is done totally by volunteers.

Celebrity Reveals Ship Designed for Galapagos Cruises

Cruise News – Nov. 16, 2017

Celebrity Cruises has unveiled Celebrity Flora, an elevated and inspired approach to marine exploration, designed specifically to cruise the Galapagos Islands.

One of the most energy-efficient ships of its size in the diverse archipelago, the 100-guest Celebrity Flora will offer seamless sea-to-shore transportation, and includes anchorless technology that maintains the ship’s position while protecting the sensitive sea floor. The Ocean Grill on Celebrity FloraInnovative outward-facing design gives guests 360-degree views of the islands, while personal suite attendants, new dining venues, an open-air stargazing platform, and expert-led ecological seminars will round out the modern luxury vacation experience.

“Celebrity Flora marks another example of our revolutionary ship design by allowing the destination and its environment to influence every decision we’ve made,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. “From the luxurious all-suite accommodations to industry-first, eco-friendly innovations, we created a ship that brings a new level of luxury, sustainability, and natural exploration to the region. Guests will feel as though they’re boarding a high-end yacht for a week of unparalleled adventures — and they are!”

Featuring Celebrity’s signature outward-facing design, Celebrity Flora virtually erases boundaries and brings this typically remote destination closer to guests. Educational, research-based programming gives travelers an opportunity to continue learning about the wildlife-rich Galapagos Islands.

The Marina is the primary point of access to the ship and can accommodate up to three Zodiacs at once, reducing transport time to and from land and allowing more time for guests to explore the practically untouched islands. The Vista on Celebrity FloraWhile on board, guests will unwind in the Sunset Lounge; find solace in The Vista, an open-air hideaway with 360-degree views, cocoon-style loungers, and private cabanas; and enjoy the breathtaking surrounds in the floor-to-ceiling glass-wrapped Observatory.

Darwin’s Cove and the Naturalist Center provide a bounty of information on the destination, wildlife, and environmental efforts, while the Discovery Lounge will be home to naturalist presentations and excursion information. Guests can participate in a guided astronomy tour or enjoy star-lit skies on their own from the Stargazing Platform.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served daily in the Seaside Restaurant; the Ocean Grill will offer a casual dining space, panoramic views, and Dinner Under the Stars; or guests can choose from in-room dining experience.

Celebrity Flora will feature all-suite accommodations with oversized bathrooms. These modern retreats bring the outside in through Celebrity’s signature outward-facing layouts and heralded Infinite Verandas, and come complete with sustainable, natural, regionally inspired materials. Personal suite attendants cater to guests’ needs.

Celebrity Flora’s two Penthouse Suites are the largest in the Galapagos with separate indoor and outdoor living areas, customizable lighting and shades, and a telescope for stargazing or wildlife spotting. Other accommodations include Royal Suites, Sky Suite with VerandaUltimate Sky Suites with Infinite Veranda, Premium Sky Suites with Infinite Veranda, and Sky Suites with Infinite Veranda.

The ship is one of the most energy-efficient in its class, with a 15 percent reduction of fuel consumption and equivalently fewer air emissions2, thanks to the introduction of an advanced propulsion system, hull configuration, and specially designed diesel engines. Two more firsts in the Galapagos: A dynamic positioning system allows the ship to stay in position without physically anchoring and damaging the sea floor, and zero speed stabilizers promise smooth sailing.

Celebrity will reduce the need for plastics on board by introducing in-room water filtration stations and by converting sea water and air conditioning condensation into pure, fresh water. Any materials that can be recycled, reused, or donated will be as part of a strict waste management system.

Celebrity Flora will sail from Baltra year-round, making her first sailing on May 26, 2019. Bookings for the alternating 7-night inner and outer loop itineraries are now open.

Disney Debuts “Beauty and the Beast” on Disney Dream and Announces Updates to Disney Magic

Cruise News – Nov. 15, 2017

“Beauty and the Beast,” a brand-new musical production inspired by Disney’s live-action adaptation of the animated classic, has debuted on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream during the voyage that departed November 6.

The new show features a style of theater that interlaces classic storytelling elements with cutting-edge technology to create a unique theatrical experience in the 1,340-seat Walt Disney Theatre. This innovative take on the story – featuring high-definition projections, dynamic scenery, and a little bit of Disney magic – transforms renowned songs into show-stopping numbers, and lavish costumes and puppetry bring a fresh perspective to beloved characters.

A talented collection of Broadway artists created a new approach to this iconic story. Director and choreographer Connor Gallagher drew inspiration from the live-action film, but used the scenic motif of a music box to shape the “tale as old as time.” Set designer Jason Sherwood worked with video designer Aaron Rhyne to create a transforming set that takes audiences on a journey through the music box, from Belle’s provincial French town to the Beast’s mysterious castle. Complementing the LCD-projection walls and carefully choreographed set-pieces is lighting design by four-time Tony Award-nominated Japhy Weideman.

Costume designer Sarah Cubbage and puppet designer Jeff Conover joined forces to give life to the enchanted objects of “Beauty and the Beast.” Live actors become elements of the scenery, while beloved characters such as Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, and Cogsworth are brought into existence by actors in elaborate costumes manipulating innovative puppets in plain view on stage. “We need to remember they’re human in there,” explains writer Sara Wordsworth, who started drafting this project two years ago, when the live-action film was still in production.

“Beauty and the Beast” features songs from the original animated film’s award-winning soundtrack by acclaimed composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman as well as two of the new songs created for the live-action film by Menken and lyricist Tim Rice: “How Does a Moment Last Forever” and “Days in the Sun.” Enchanting orchestrations by Matt Castle and Frank Galgano (“IntElaborate costumes and LCD-projection walls help talented actors bring this fairy tale to the stage. o the Woods”) bring a unique musical identity to the production.

Beloved songs like “Belle,” “Something There,” and “Beauty and the Beast” received a musical makeover that reflects the show’s stylized approach, while songs like “Gaston” and “Be Our Guest” are exuberant production numbers.

One of the most iconic songs has been completely re-imagined for the stage. “Be Our Guest” has become a multicourse French dinner rooted in imagination and fantasy, as rousing dance and dazzling visual effects fill the stage during this full-fledged spectacle.

New Spaces and New Experiences Debuting on Disney Magic

The line also announced new spaces and new experiences are coming to Disney Magic. Highlights include Rapunzel’s Royal Table, an all-new dining experience inspired by the beloved story of Disney’s Tangled that features characters and live entertainment that will transport guests to the kingdom of Corona for an evening of music and interactive fun featuring Rapunzel and the mischievous Snuggly Duckling Thugs.

In addition, Vibe is being transformed into a trendy urban loft environment where teens ages 14 to 17 can enjoy a new coffee and smoothie bar, play video and virtual reality games, and check out other activities like a DJ spin-off and movie making.

Also, the adult-only Cove Café will be redesigned in a sophisticated tropical style. This serene setting by the Quiet Cove Pool will also feature adult beverage tastings at select times for an additional fee. Just steps away, the adjacent Signals Bar will also be transformed with a similar look.

Other enhancements include the addition of Club Disney Junior in Disney’s Oceaneer Club and a redesigned Rainforest Room with steam and hydrotherapy in Senses Spa for adults.

These new enhancements debut on Disney Magic starting March 9, 2018, on sailings from Miami.

Royal Caribbean’s Wave of Innovations

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. to Roll Out a Wave of Digital Innovations

Cruise News – Nov. 13, 2017

During a “Sea Beyond” event last week in Brooklyn, New York, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (parent company to Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Azamara Club Cruises) announced that it’s rolling out a wave of digital innovations that includes a guest-empowering app that will blanket the company’s 48-ship fleet over the next two years, as well as innovation that will banish check-in lines at ports, equip crewmembers to anticipate guests’ needs, and enable ships to sail through the water with more fuel savings.

“The pace of change is relentless — and so are we,” said Richard D. Fain, RCL’s chairman and CEO. “We are harnessing a range of technologies to enhance every facet of our business, every minute of our guests’ vacations, and every inch of the ships we build.”

Jay Schneider, RCL’s senior vice president, digital, said one focus of RCL’s company-wide innovation initiative is zeroing in on wasted effort and wasted energy. “We are finding ways to eliminate friction and frustration, giving guests more time to make the memories that make vacations special,” said Schneider.

For example, guests will be able to board ships without check-in lines thanks to facial recognition technology; sign up for shore excursions, order drinks, and make dinner reservations directly on a smartphone app; and indulge in VR and AR experiences that transform ship spaces into virtual environments and interactive games.

The technological transformation also includes innovations to make ships more energy-efficient, enhance ship management, and put more connectivity into the hands of crewmembers.

For Guests

“Our vision is to make the guest experience hassle-free, personalized and fun,” said Schneider.

One specific focus is removing time-stealing moments from the cruise experience. “Time spent in line — whether you’re waiting for your food, waiting for your bags to arrive, waiting on a table, or booking an excursion—is time stolen from your time off,” Schneider said. To return that time to guests, the company is combining technologies ranging from facial recognition to RFID tagging to GPS mapping to Bluetooth-enabled beacons to streamline boarding, manage check-ins automatically and improve wayfinding.

Many of these same technologies are being deployed to put the power to manage your vacation in the palm of your hand, said Schneider. “Our new app will make it simpler than ever to book and plan your cruise vacation from home or with a travel agent. Once on board, you can navigate our ships with interactive maps and guides, explore the ship with cool features like x-ray vision, or order drinks that can be delivered to you wherever you are on the ship.” The app, along with the next generation of the company’s WOW Bands, will also unlock guest staterooms and enable guests to control stateroom lighting and temperature.

An initial release of the cruise guest app is already available on selected ships in RCL’s fleet. Schneider said RCL will continue to refine the app, adding new ship-specific features and capabilities, with each subsequent release. “Our aim is to have the app enabled on about 15 percent of our fleet by the end of this year, and more than double that by the end of 2018,” said Schneider.

Digital floors, ceilings and walls can change to create a “choose your own environment” capability.Other innovations showcased at Sea Beyond were in the “concept car” phase, said Schneider. “Sea Beyond attendees will get glimpses of what happens when we let our imaginations run wild. So think of sampling an exotic dessert where, with each bite, the entire environment changes — at least virtually. Or imagine a stateroom where you not only control the lighting and the temperature, but can change the scene from starry night to rainforest canopy or island home with the touch of a button.”

For Crew

The innovations enriching the cruise guest experience will be complemented by a suite of tools for crews, as well. For example, the app-enabled offerings for guests will be mirrored on the crew side by mobile applications that help crewmembers check-in guests, complete required paperwork, track delivery of guests’ bags to their staterooms, and interact with guests and anticipate their needs throughout their vacations.

In addition, crews will have access to easier means to manage their own schedules, stay connected to friends and family while on board, and stay connected to RCL during their off-contract periods.

For the Fleet

Also showcased at Sea Beyond were innovations aimed at enhancing overall ship management and improving energy efficiency.

For example, forthcoming command centers will use augmented reality to assist with navigation and maneuvering. “Think of it as enabling the nautical equivalent of flying on instruments,” said Fain. “Our ships always operate with keen sensitivity to the limitations the weather may impose. But having new means to mitigate the weather’s impacts on departures and arrivals helps us uphold schedule and itinerary commitments important to our guests,” added Fain.

In addition, next generation bridge technology will allow officers to track guests on their way to muster stations to ensure all are accounted for and locate stragglers.

RCL is also innovating to reduce fuel consumption across its fleet, which not only lowers operating costs but also lightens stack emissions that are part of cruising’s environmental footprint. Historically, each new class of RCL ships is significantly more fuel efficient than its predecessors as new high-efficiency appliances, window tinting, and improved lighting, heating, and cooling technologies help reduce energy needs. The company continues to evolve hull designs to reduce drag, an evolution most evident in the “bulbous bows” now common on cruise ships. In addition, RCL is pioneering the use of an air lubrication system that coats the hulls of its ships with millions of microscopic air bubbles to further reduce resistance and drag.

Complementing RCL’s energy conservation efforts are initiatives to use alternative energy sources. Some RCL ships are already equipped with solar panels that generate sufficient power for limited onboard needs. At Sea Beyond, RCL previewed the use of fuel cells for power generation.

“Every year, millions of guests are entrusting us with something very precious: their vacation time,” said Fain. “To merit that trust, we work to surpass guests’ expectations at every opportunity, from planning their trips to boarding our ships, whether on sea days or shore excursions, and in every dining, recreation, and entertainment venue. Sea Beyond is a preview of how we are bringing those aspirations to life in a stem-to-stern transformation of our entire company while creating a new world on the water.”

Porthole Cruise News Briefs – Nov. 10, 2017

  • Princess Cruises has released a time-lapse video of a landmark event – Caribbean Princess becoming the first neo-Panamax cruise ship to transit the newly widened Panama Canal. Previously, only vessels with a maximum width of 106 feet could enter the Agua Clara locks on the Atlantic side of the canal. But on October 26, Caribbean Princess – with a width of 118 feet and carrying 3,200 guests – sailed through the expanded locks for the first of 13 scheduled crossings.
  • Two popular ports have reported record-breaking seasons this year. Quebec City has hosted an incredible 201,000 cruise passengers, an increase of 30 percent over 2017. And the Caribbean island of Nevis is expecting to increase their calls by 72 percent, representing 42 additional calls for the 2017-2018 season. The scheduled calls include seven ships visiting for the first time.
  • Holland America Line is issuing a Best Price Guarantee for all pre-booked EXC tours, covering shore excursions on all ships and itineraries except Asia cruises. If you find a comparable shore excursion at a lower price than one you’ve already booked, Holland America Line will provide an onboard credit of 110 percent of the price difference.

Princess Gets Multimillion-Dollar Terminal Upgrade in Fort Lauderdale

Cruise News – Nov. 9, 2017

Carnival Corporation has announced that it’s completed an extensive, multimillion-dollar redesign and upgrade of Cruise Terminal 2 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Used exclusively by Princess Cruises, the upgraded terminal now features a more streamlined departure design, interactive experiences, movie theater, and more comfortable pre-boarding areas transforming guests’ experience as they prepare to depart for their cruise vacation.

“When our guests arrive at the terminal excited about their cruise, that’s a great opportunity for us to begin immersing them in a more personalized and hassle-free vacation experience,” said John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer for Carnival Corporation. “We have completely transformed the arrival so that our guests can board at a pace that’s more relaxed and convenient for them. Our focus is on the entire guest experience with a special emphasis on making the arrival experience exceptional. From guests’ homes through the cruise terminal and to their stateroom, every guest engagement is intended to maximize their vacation experience.”

The terminal transformation includes the addition of Carnival Corporation’s proprietary xIoT (Experiential Internet of Things) network, which is activated by the Ocean Medallion™. As a result, guests sailing on Medallion Class ships will enjoy expedited boarding and a more personalized arrival experience as soon as they enter the terminal. This includes interacting with their Ocean Tagalong™ on a gigantic LED screen (8’ 3” tall by 53’ 5” wide) that surrounds the Ocean Portal area where guests enter after clearing the security and check-in area.

Ocean Tagalongs are digital companions that guests create and personalize using the SocialOcean™ app, which is available for download through the Apple App Store and GooglePlay. Guests can select from among three sea creatures — Sea Turtle, Seahorse or Butterfly Fish — to best reflect their personality or mood, then further customize their Ocean Tagalong by body shape, color, pattern, markings, and more.

For guests wanting to stay connected prior to boarding their cruise, Terminal 2 now features Carnival Corporation’s new MedallionNet™, which provides cruise guests in the terminal and aboard Medallion Class ships with easy-to-access Wi-Fi. The connectivity also lets guests enjoy a portfolio of original mobile games before and after boarding. PlayOcean Everywhere™ features four social casino games that can be played anywhere at any time with virtual currency, in addition to in-app purchases to boost gameplay.

On the first floor of the new terminal, guests can also relax in the OceanView Theater — a comfortable cinema that features the originally produced Ocean Original travel series, which transports viewers to new and exotic places, introduces them to extraordinary people who live there, and provides inspiration for near and far ocean travel. The terminal’s second level offers picturesque views of Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway and docked Princess ships.

Regal Princess will be the first ship to depart from the newly redesigned terminal, as she begins a series of preview cruises introducing Ocean Medallion Vacations.

Lindblad to Build New State-of-the-Art Polar Vessel

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 8, 2017
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Cruise News – Nov. 8, 2017

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc. has announced that it has signed an agreement with Norwegian shipbuilder and ship designer Ulstein to build a new expedition ship scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2020, with an option for two additional ships to be delivered in subsequent years.

The state-of-the-art polar vessel has been designed as the ultimate expedition platform with a focus on safety and comfort, as well as innovative sustainability solutions to reduce its environmental impact. For example, a core feature is Ulstein’s signature X-BOW®, a distinctive bow that provides fuel efficiency while significantly improving comfort in rough seas; and a very high ice class for access deep into polar regions. The ship’s expanded fuel and water tanks provide for extended operations in remote areas; while the zero-speed stabilizers will ensure stability underway, whether at zero speed when stopped for wildlife observation, or embarking/disembarking the ship.

“The launch of this ship will mark the 50th anniversary year of the first-ever purpose-built expedition ship, Lindblad Explorer, which was built by my father, Lars-Eric Lindblad,” said Sven Lindblad, president and CEO of Lindblad. “It will set another important milestone in the company’s commitment to deliver expedition travel at its best.”

In keeping with the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic ethos to connect guests with the environment being explored, the ship will be designed to access the outside environment from anywhere on the ship. With 75 percent of the cabins featuring balconies for private viewing; multiple observation decks inside and outside; and new “observation wings,” the surrounding environs will always be accessible. Off-ship exploring will be greatly enhanced as well with an innovative Zodiac loading system that will ensure quick access to every destination. The ship’s expedition tools for exploration will include kayaks, cross-country skis, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), hydrophones, a video microscope, underwater video cameras, a helicopter landing platform, and more to be announced in the coming months.

Other ship details include 69 spacious guest cabins and suites, including 12 cabins for solo travelers; a spa and fitness area that includes treatment rooms, saunas, a fitness room, a relaxation area, and yoga room; two infinity Jacuzzis; and dining offerings that include a main restaurant with outstanding views and an outdoor barbeque and bistro area.

A Trio of Exciting Cruise Soirées

by Judi Cuervo November 6, 2017

Monthly Mantra

I Love New York…I Love New York…I Love New York…

A Trio of Exciting Cruise Soirées

There’s been a flurry of New York–based cruise events lately, and since I’m here in the Big Apple, and the fine folks of Florida-based Porthole Cruise Magazine are not, I’m often their girl to cover said events. As a result, in the previous weeks, I’ve eaten well, tippled considerably, toted home cool goodie bags, and chitchatted with cruise execs about some pretty exciting stuff. Here’s the roundup:

Viking Orion: Viking Sky’s first call in New York included a press conference and reception so I hoofed it over to the 12th Avenue piers, grabbed a glass of wine (okay, a few) and some hors d’oeuvres, and settled in to the ship’s theater to hear Viking chairman, Torstein Hagen, spill it about the company’s fifth ocean ship, Viking Orion. The ship will hit the seas in 2018, but it doesn’t end there. By 2022, Viking will have eight ocean ships and here’s the thing: All eight will be identical so that no matter which ship a Viking guest sails, they’ll feel right at home. (The line’s first ocean ship was Viking Star.) As one who could get lost on the Staten Island Ferry, I kind of love that idea.

Norwegian Escape: Apparently, I’m not the only one who loves New York since Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that the city will be Norwegian Escape’s homeport beginning spring 2018. The announcement was made at the trendy PHD Rooftop Lounge by the industry’s cutest cruise exec, Andy Stuart, along with Norwegian Escape’s godfather, Pitbull, who christened the ship in 2015. Okay…I’ll admit it. I had never heard of Pitbull until I mentioned the event in my office and every young female within a 10-cubicle radius went bananas. And, seriously, any guy who has his own vodka (Voli) is okay by me.

Europa 2: It was back to the pier for a look at Europa 2’s restyle, and what a restyle it is! As someone who hasn’t spruced up her apartment since 2007, I simply cannot believe Europa 2 is overhauled every two years, but with pristine white carpeting in the Owner’s Suites I shouldn’t be surprised. Europa 2 is luxury with a capital “L” — what other ship do you know of that roasts its own coffee since commercial roasts simply do not produce an acceptable brew with the water on board? Returning guests will find amazing artwork, a Europa 2 museum, a dreamy new spa that includes a variety of saunas and a relaxation area complete with (electric) fireplace, and a record player with vinyl record collection in Collins, the ship’s gin bar.

Yup. I sure do love New York, particularly its cruise events.

Windstar Flagship Gets New Set of Sails

Wind Surf Hoists New Sheets

Cruise News – Nov. 2, 2017

Windstar Cruises’ flagship, the 310-guest Wind Surf, one of the largest motor sail yachts in the world, recently received crisp new sails, nearly half a football field worth of sturdy Dacron sailcloth measuring 21,570 square feet.

Sailmakers work on Wind Surf's sailsThe five new sails were designed and handcrafted in France by a world-class team of maritime designers and artisans at Incidence Sails, the largest commercial sailmaker in France and premier designers in the off-shore racing and Super Yacht sectors. The manufacturing was done on the floors of the sailmaker’s spacious facilities in Brest and La Rochelle, France, over several months, delivering the sails in two installments.

Spread across Wind Surf’s five towering masts, the new sails make up more than a half-acre of triangular beauty. The ship’s sails unfurl daily, soaring 221 feet to the sky, harnessing the power of the wind to propel the ship into hundreds of different ports around the world.

Wind Surf's sails cover more than a half-acre.“Our guests really appreciate the romance of sailing and the evening Sail-Away is a time-honored event for guests and crew alike, a time to celebrate an amazing day of discovery while anticipating new adventures on the horizon,” said Windstar president John Delaney. “The moment you hear and feel the sails snap at the power of the wind — this experience is unmatched in travel.”

Commenting on the intricate and unusual operation of installing each of the giant sails, Wind Surf’s Captain Pedro Pinto stated, “We needed to check the forecast for the perfect conditions to have just a light breeze, the crew already has a good knowledge of the process and with each sail it gets easier with experience. The guests and crew love to see the new sails!”

The crisp couture sails are replaced approximately every five years for Windstar’s iconic 617-foot-long sailing vessel. Windstar will repurpose the replaced sails by having them made into bags that guests may purchase in the onboard gift shops aboard its fleet of six ships.

Check out the dramatic time-lapse video of the making of the new sails.
