Why You Need to Be Cruising from Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point)

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 16, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The Caribbean may be one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, but that doesn’t mean you have to cruise like everyone else. In fact, more and more cruisers are discovering one of the most underrated regions for cruising and it’s a lot closer to home than you might think. Puerto Peñasco, Mexico is just an hour from the border with Arizona and only four hours by car from Phoenix and that’s just part of why it’s the best vacation you’ve never considered. Cruisers from all over the Southwest are discovering why a Cruise & Maritime Voyages itinerary from Puerto Peñasco is a vacation worth taking.

Puerto Peñasco is Mexico’s Best Kept Secret

What started as a quaint Mexican fishing village has become one of Mexico’s best kept secrets for those looking for a vacation far from the bustle and crowds of better-known Mexican vacation destinations like Cancun or Cabo San Lucas. Those who live in the Southwestern United States, particularly Arizona, are much closer to this beachside paradise than they might realize so it’s time to get in the know about why Puerto Peñasco is a cruiser’s paradise.

Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, has a unique location on the Sea of Cortez, the strip of water in between mainland Mexico and the Baja Peninsula. Out of the desert sprung an oasis on the water complete with stunning beaches, tons of activities and plenty of sunshine to enjoy. It’s also growing as a port for cruises up and down the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California.

Puerto Peñasco

Nothing beats a Sea of Cortez sunset

Cruise & Maritime Voyages is one of the more popular cruise lines offering 11-night voyages from  Puerto Peñasco. Their Treasures of the Sea of Cortez itinerary takes full advantage of the natural beauty and wildlife in the area to bring cruisers an experience they’ll never forget. The Sea of Cortez has an abundance of wildlife to enjoy on your vacation. Watch the dolphins play in the waves or snorkel among the thousands of tropical fish and coral, you never know what the day will bring in this incredible part of the world.

Many cruises along the Sea of Cortez are labels as “soft expedition” meaning that you get to decide how much adventure you want on any given day. When you cruise with Cruise & Maritime Voyages, everyone has the option for lounging in a deck chair or diving amongst the coral reefs. Where else can you personalize a vacation like that?

 Puerto Peñasco

La Paz is a stop on the Sea of Cortez Itinerary

What to do in Puerto Peñasco

If you’re visiting Puerto Peñasco because you’re leaving on a cruise vacation, there’s a ton of things to do before or after you cruise. While some may be happy lounging on the beach with a cold drink, others with a more adventurous side can enjoy activities like:

  • Snorkeling
  • Kayaking/Paddleboarding
  • Jet Skiing
  • Beach Sports
  • Golf
  • ATV Rentals
  • Tequila Tastings

Stay in Puerto Peñasco before or after you cruise and it’s almost like having two vacations rolled into one. The region is a tropical paradise akin to what you’ll find on the beaches of the Caribbean or the Keys of Florida. Bright sunshine, warm waters and unique flora and fauna make Puerto Peñasco your next great cruise vacation. What are you waiting for? Start planning your Puerto Peñasco vacation today!

Turkey’s flagship Turkish Airlines has heavily invested in the enormous potential of Istanbul as a convenient travel hub between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Whether it be Turkey itself or international cities far beyond, the airline has distinguished itself by flying its 335 aircraft to countless countries and exotic destinations the world over. Travel from the United States is facilitated by gateway departures from Atlanta, Chicago, Washington D.C., Miami, Houston, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Adding to the convenience of the airline’s worldwide connections, the opening of Istanbul’s sparkling new airport serves as added appeal for destination-rich air travel. Ultimately, the new facilities will house a shopping mall and designer outlet, convention center, hotels, and an art and cultural center.

Will You Mix the Next Bacardi Legacy Cocktail?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 9, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

We’ve all had good bartenders. Sometimes they’re even great. But what does it take to be the best bartender? Winning the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition is a great start. The competition is a global one, pitting the best mixologists the world over against one another to see who can craft the latest and greatest cocktail using one of several award-winning rums from Bacardi.

Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition

The Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition began in 2006 in an effort to add to the brand’s stellar lineup of classic cocktails like a mojito or a daiquiri. These iconic drinks only grow more famous as the years pass, but the search for new and exciting flavor combinations is a constant process. It’s not enough for a Bacardi cocktail to simply taste good, it has to transcend the time and place of its origin and establish itself as a go-to option for thirsty patrons all over the world.

Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition

Eric Van Beek demonstrates the proper way to make a Cariño

Winning the international competition starts with a bold imagination and a flair for outside the box thinking. Does Greek yoghurt belong in a cocktail? Eric Van Beek thought so, and his drink, called Cariño, took home first prize in the 2018 competition. A delightful mix of Bacardi Reserva Ocho Rum, vanilla syrup, lemon juice, a scoop of greek yoghurt and yellow chatreuse, a Cariño is undeniably smooth on the palate with a hint of aromatics when sipped. Served in a coupette, the lovely creme color makes the drink as visually appealing as it is tasty.

The Importance of Legacy

When Don Facundo Bacardi Masso distilled the first batch of Bacardi rum on the island of Cuba in 1862, he laid the foundation for more than just a great spirit. He cultivated a legacy more than 150 years in the making, one that’s been passed down through five generations of the Bacardi family.

Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition

The important thing about legacies is they don’t have to be complicated, and that principle is on display in each cocktail dreamed up during the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition. The hallmark of a great drink is the person enjoying it is familiar with the ingredients. It’s the combination of familiar flavors which piques interest and creates a unique experience, not the flavors alone. Creating contrasts, using one flavor to boost another or temper it back, bartenders in the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition are mad scientists searching for the perfect combination of taste, mouthfeel and finish to vault their drink to the top of the legacy rankings. Bartenders are limited to just six “commonly available” ingredients, which include garnish, so choosing your flavors wisely is key to victory.

Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition 2019

This year’s winner, Ronnaporn Kanivichaporn from Bangkok, Thailand, created one of the most unique drinks ever entered into the competition. Pink Me Up gets its name from the gorgeous pink color which comes from a mixture of Bacardi Carta Blanca and fresh tomatoes muddled with orgeat syrup, lemon juice, basil leaves and olive brine.

Tomato and basil is a classic combination in the culinary world and the flavor profile transferred beautifully to Kanivichaporn’s legacy cocktail. The judges were impressed with his ability to craft a savory cocktail that works as a fantastic alternative to another timeless beverage, the Bloody Mary. Pink Me Up is innovative, yet familiar. Sip it in the afternoon or the evening, it transcends time and occasion. That’s why it earned the privilege to be called a Bacardi Legacy Cocktail!

Where Do The Swimming Pigs Go During a Hurricane?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 5, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As Hurricane Dorian made its way through the Bahamas, people all over the world watched anxiously hoping and praying for the safety of the Bahamian people. One of the biggest questions cruisers had involved not the people, but the wildlife, specifically the Bahamas’ famous swimming pigs. Do they get evacuated for the storm? Can they survive on their own?

Never fear, cruisers. Pig Beach, the most famous spot for the swimming swine, was well out of the way of Hurricane Dorian and reports are that the pigs are fine!

Where are the Swimming Pigs?

While there are several islands in the Bahamas with a wild pig population, Exuma is the most well known. The island is located in the southern Bahamas, outside of the reach of Hurricane Dorian. There’s a place called Pig Beach where you can find them frolicking in the water and chasing tourists for a snack.

RELATED: Cruise Lines Donating Millions for Hurricane Dorian Recovery

Exuma Watersports, a private tour and charter company on the island, is the unofficial keeper of the pigs and updated their Facebook page to report everything was okay following the storm. With hundreds of reactions, likes and shares on the post, it’s clear the pigs are on everyone’s mind!

Exuma Watersports takes guests to Pig Beach all year round to see, swim and feed the feral pigs. There are plenty of legends as to how the pigs got on the island, but the fact remains that they’re more than capable of surviving a storm if it were to hit the island in a more direct way.

Like any animal, pigs have natural instincts which help keep them safe when danger is present. During past hurricanes, some kind souls have helped bring piglets to safety as they are less equipped to handle the high winds and heavy rains, but Mom and Dad pig are just fine riding out the storm!

Have you gone swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas? Let us know your experience in the comments below!

Cruise Lines Donating Millions for Hurricane Dorian Recovery

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 4, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

In the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, which steamrolled the northernmost islands in the Bahamas over Labor Day weekend, major cruise lines are pledging millions for recovery efforts in the region. The Walt Disney Disney Company and Royal Caribbean have both pledged $1 million for recovery efforts. The donations will be given to non-profit relief agencies and will help provide food, water and shelter in the short term as well as overall rebuilding efforts.

Disney Pledges a Million

In a statement released on September 3, Disney Chairman and CEO Robert A. Iger announced the donation and their commitment to the region.

“The Walt Disney Company stand with the people of The Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian” he said. “We hope our $1 million donation will provide much-needed relief and help our neighbors, colleagues, and all those impacted by this devastating storm begin the long process of recovery as they work to put their lives and communities back together.”

The company also pledged support and resources for employees on Castaway Cay and those affected by the storm.

Royal Caribbean’s Donation

Royal Caribbean is another cruise line quick to act in the aftermath of the storm. Royal Caribbean is committing $1 million to relief efforts, and ITM—their partner in the Holistica joint venture that is developing the Grand Lucayan resort in Freeport—is also donating an additional $100,000. Royal is collaborating with the Bahamian government and the Pan American Development Foundation, a non-profit, as well as local Bahamian charities and organizations to ensure the funds are doing the most good possible for the people of the Bahamas.

Arnold Donald Releases Statement

While a dollar amount hasn’t been announced, Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald released a statement on September 3rd with an update for the people of the Bahamas.

“To our friends in The Bahamas, please know you will not be alone in your effort.  All of us at Carnival Corporation pledge to work with you. We have been and remain in constant contact with government officials as they determine the highest priorities for both the short term and long term,” he said. “We know this is a difficult time. But we have no doubt that the unyielding spirit of the Bahamian people will overcome, recover, rebuild and be stronger and more resilient than ever.”

4 PM UPDATE: Carnival Corporation and the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation have pledged a combined $2 million to recovery efforts in the Bahamas.

Please Help!  The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, a top-rated charity, has a 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund which helps those affected by the storms. Please do what you can to help the people of the Bahamas!

Is My Cruise Cancelled? An Update on the Bahamas After Hurricane Dorian

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 4, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

A terrifying weekend is finally over for the people of the Bahamas. Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 storm, put on its parking brake over the northern islands of Great Abacoa and Grand Bahamas for what must have felt like an eternity for those on the islands. As the first images of the damage started to emerge on social media, it’s clear that recovery efforts could take months or even years. Places like Marsh Harbour look completely unrecognizable and it’s going to take everyone pitching in to help the people begin to recover.

 A Bahamas Update

While the people of the Bahamas are obviously our primary concern at the moment, we do want to share with you a few updates from cruise lines regarding the status of their private islands in the area as many cruisers are booked to visit them in the coming months. As of now, most cruise lines have been able to reroute ships and itineraries, making it unlikely that your future cruise will be affected. Make sure to follow Porthole Cruise on Facebook and Twitter for more updates as they become available.

Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island, saw only tropical storm force winds according to a statement released by the company. Indications are that damage is minimal which is nothing short of a miracle given the island’s location near the Great Abacoa.

Perfect Day at CocoCay, one of the newest private island resorts in cruising, also seems to have made it through relatively unscathed. Images posted on social media appear to show the water slides and more still standing. The island was closed early last week and all employees were removed as the storm grew more dangerous.

Half Moon Cay Update: There was minor beach erosion that will be cleaned up but no structural damage. The horses and stingrays are doing well. HAL ships are scheduled to return 10/21/19. Our thoughts are with the people in The Bahamas that are impacted by #HurricanDorian2019.

(1/1)#HurricaneDorian Update: We have no ships in the anticipated storm path. Initial reports show only cosmetic damage & beach erosion on #PrincessCays. The safety of guests & crew is always our first priority & we’re closely monitoring for potential impact to future itineraries

Why Does Bill W. Have so Many Friends on a Cruise?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 3, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The first day on a cruise ship is nothing but pure, unadulterated bliss. All you need is a deck chair, a great book and a pair of sunglasses to get your vacation off on the right foot. If you’re one to check out the daily program schedule each day, you might notice things like the Jones Family Reunion at the lounge on deck 10 or cooking classes with the chef in the galley. You might also notice something you might not understand, a meeting for “Friends of Bill W.”

Who is Bill W. and why does he have a meeting for his friends on board most cruise ships? Read on and find out!

Cruising with Bill W.

William Wilson, also known as Bill W., was the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, an international recovery network aimed at helping people who struggle with alcohol use and abuse. While people can take a vacation from their jobs and daily lives, they can’t take a vacation from the recovery process. Going on a cruise may be a concerning prospect for some as alcohol is prominent on board and without meetings like at home, resisting the urge to drink can be challenging.

People from all walks of life, particularly those battling substance abuse, are encouraged to attend meetings and everyone is made to feel welcome no matter what their situation. Having a support system on a cruise can be a big help for someone who wants to keep their recovery going while on a vacation.

Friends of Bill W. meetings on board a cruise ship help to connect people who may be in a similar situation. Support can come from anywhere, even people on your cruise vacation!

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Most cruisers and everyone in Florida spent this week glued to the news because a hurricane is headed this way. The folks over at Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line saw the silver lining of this dark cloud and is helping people in Palm Beach and surrounding areas get out of dodge before the storm with a cruise leaving West Palm Beach today, Friday August 30th at 4pm.

Escape Hurricane Dorian

The Port of Freeport will close at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 30th and the Port of Palm Beach will close between 3:00 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, August 30th. Given this information, the cruise line has implemented an adjusted schedule for the next few days.

The company is currently working with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism to evacuate a pre-authorized list of Grand Bahama Island residents onboard Grand Celebration.

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line is welcoming those looking to evacuate West Palm Beach and the surrounding areas, or simply seeking an alternative to remaining on land during the storm, onboard its previously scheduled Friday evening Grand Celebration departure.  The cruise fare for this sailing will be discounted to $69 per person, per day, plus tax.  Passengers must reserve their cruise in advance and embark prior to 4:00 p.m. Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line will provide guests with their itinerary upon arrival at the port.

Safer at Sea

Oneil Khosa, CEO of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, explained how the line is making safety a paramount.

“The safety and security of our passengers and crew members is of upmost importance at all times.  With this modified sailing schedule, we are mirroring our successful and well-received evacuation cruise efforts from Hurricane Irma in 2017,” he said. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation with Hurricane Dorian and navigate according to the latest conditions and advisories, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for our passengers.”

Are you looking for an escape from the storm? You’ve still got time to book! Head over to the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line website or call 888-530-2775 to book.

Isn’t it time to book a cruise? To the Pacific, to be specific.

Windstar Cruises is a small ship cruising company that touts themselves as 180 degrees from ordinary. If you’ve only sailed on larger ships, you’re really missing out on a fantastic cruise vacation. Small ships (less than 500 people) are fantastic experiences as you can go places and see things the bigger ships simply cannot.

8 Days Along Mexico’s Pacific Coast

Windstar Cruises has a Pacific itinerary on board the luxurious Star Legend with calls at Manzanillo, Huatulco, Puerto Chiapas, Playa del Coco, Herradura, and Puerto Caldera. The cruise leaves from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on Saturday October 11, 2019 and sails for 8 days before returning.

Do yourself a favor and book today as suites are starting at just $999 per person!

Hurricane Dorian Is Here to Ruin Your Labor Day Weekend

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 29, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Well, we knew we’d get one eventually.

Officially starting on June 1, hurricane season is something all cruisers keep a watchful eye on. Here we are a few days away from September and the season is finally showing its first signs of life with Hurricane Dorian expected to make landfall as a category 3 or worse storm somewhere along Florida’s East coast. Most forecasters have the outer bands of the storm arriving Saturday night into Sunday morning and those in the path should start making safety plans immediately.

Make sure you follow Porthole Cruise Magazine’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for updates on the storm and changes to cruise line itineraries as the storm creeps closer to the mainland.

Hurricane Dorian Cruise Cancellations

Thanks to modern forecasting, cruise lines know well in advance whether or not a hurricane is going to hit an area where they sail. As a result, cruise lines rarely cancel cruises in the event of a hurricane, but they do alter itineraries to keep ships out of the path of the storm.

Just yesterday, Royal Caribbean announced the closure of Perfect Day at CocoCay, their private island resort in the Bahamas, as the storm grew in intensity and drew closer to the region. All employees were removed from the island with a tentative reopening date of September 4. Ships scheduled to call at CocoCay in the next week are being rerouted to other ports outside of the hurricane’s reach.

Virgin Islands Get First Taste of Dorian’s Wrath

The beautiful U.S. and British Virgin Islands along with Puerto Rico became the first places to suffer high winds and heavy rain as Dorian was upgraded from a tropical storm to a category 1 hurricane as it passed over the islands.

Powerful wind and rain battered St. John as Dorian passed over the U.S. Virgin Islands, having now strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane with winds up to 80 mph.

MSC Grandiosa Will Feature All New Fine Art Experiences

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 27, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

We’re just months away from the launch of MSC Cruises’ newest ship MSC Grandiosa and that means new details about the highly anticipated ship are coming fast and furious. The most recent update let cruisers know about a new fine art experience made just for the new ship. The immersive art and dining experience featuring “Degas Danse Dessin” aims to bring guests closer to the world of fine art with a spellbinding exhibition of original Impressionist art.

Fine Art at Sea

Housed in a purpose-built installation within the chic L’Atelier Bistro at the heart of the ship’s Mediterranean-style Promenade, the Edgar Degas exhibition is the first curation of this unique collection on board a cruise ship. The Danse Dessin series presents 26 studies of movement and dance and was previously exhibited in major international galleries and museums.

Degas’ work encapsulates the soul of a romantic Paris, truly fitting within the setting of the new French Bistro on board MSC Grandiosa. It will also offer an immersive experience for guests with five videos running alongside the artwork detailing details of Degas’ work and life.

RELATED: The Best Place to Buy Art? On a Cruise Ship!

Marcello Smarrelli, the exhibit’s curator, explained how the artist’s style was perfect for an interactive exhibition.

“Despite his apparently romantic subjects, Degas was a great experimenter, deeply interested in the use of new technologies available in those years of great scientific and industrial renewal. The focus of his artistic research was the study of the movement of the human body and the attempt to reproduce it in an artwork” he said. “For this reason, his artistic practice was fundamental for the birth of photography and cinema of which Degas was a pioneer. I’m sure he would have loved this interactive art exhibition, the first of its kind at sea and it is an exciting opportunity to connect people with Degas’ artwork in a new way and bring it to life through digital content for MSC Cruises guests.”

About MSC Grandiosa

MSC Grandiosa will become the new flagship in the MSC Cruises fleet when she launches in November and the state-of-the-art ship will offer a richness of experiences for every guest from world-class entertainment with brand new Cirque du Soleil at Sea shows, a wide choice of international dining options, new activities for families through to an enhanced MSC Yacht Club.

The ship is also the second MSC Cruises ship to feature ZOE, the world’s first virtual cruise personal assistant and new update to the innovative MSC for Me digital innovation program, helping guests to get the most out of their cruise vacation.

Overview

Is it bliss? We think so! Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Cruise Line’s latest addition and a ship purpose-built for Alaska cruising, complete with colorful Alaska-inspired hull artwork by marine life artist and devoted conservationist, Wyland.

The extraordinary features will be just as appealing to cruisers once the Alaska season ends and Bliss heads down south, through the Panama Canal, for her inaugural Caribbean season. Check out our review of Norwegian Bliss below!

Cuisine

Long-time Norwegian Cruise Line devotees will be happy to learn that they can continue to experience the culinary theater of Teppanyaki, the rustic Tuscan fare of La Cucina, the elegance of the French Le Bistro, and the steakhouse delights of Cagney’s. But save room for some exciting new additions to these signature eateries, some that recently debuted on other Norwegian ships and others that premiere aboard Bliss.

The Waterfront, a quarter-mile-long outdoor promenade dotted with restaurants and pubs, is a popular spot to eat. On Deck 8 you’ll find alfresco dining at Ocean Blue, a refined and elegant seafood spot that first hit the waves aboard Breakaway, and Los Lobos, an upscale cantina that debuted aboard Norwegian Dawn in 2016 and serves up traditional Mexican favorites along with handcrafted margaritas and guacamole prepared tableside. Alfresco dining areas are also offered at La Cucina and Cagney’s. All Waterfront eateries also offer indoor seating for cooler evenings on board.

Food Republic, with its à la carte menu, is an Asian fusion eatery that blends the flavors and cooking traditions of Asian and South American cuisine. This family- friendly restaurant (where ordering is done via iPad) is tucked away on Deck 8 and offers a delightful assortment of small dishes to full platters, all meant to be shared.

Other restaurants on board Norwegian Bliss include:

  • Q (a BBQ restaurant)
  • Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville
  • Garden Cafe Buffet
  • Coco’s and Dolce Gelato
  • Starbucks (the first in Norwegian’s fleet)
Features

Have a need for speed? Norwegian Bliss features an electric go-kart racing track guests are sure to love. After you race, head over to the space-themed laser tag arena, or test your courage on the Ocean Loop, a transparent free-fall waterslide that extends out past the side of the ship. A five-hole mini-golf course and video arcade as well as a barber shop and hair salon means you’ll be having fun and looking great the whole cruise.

The Mandara Spa on board Norwegian Bliss is one of the most popular spots on the ship. The thermal suite is the best place to relax while the vitality pool, salt rooms, and snow rooms will have you looking and feeling your best. Spa treatments are high end and offer all the amenities you’ve come to expect from a luxury spa retreat.

For the kids, the Splash Academy is the best place on board. The ship’s youth staff comes up with tons of fun games and activities to keep youngsters happy while parents enjoy a much-needed break.

Staterooms

Norwegian Cruise Lines wants everyone to have the opportunity to cruise, and the cabins on board Norwegian Bliss have options for all kinds of travelers. Along with all the standard interior, oceanview, and balcony staterooms and suites, there’s also 82 rooms designed for solo passengers. Each solo room is an interior and quite small, but with “windows” which virtually project the scene outside.

Standard oceanview and balcony staterooms are modern, sleek, and comfortable while the suites are as extravagant as you’d expect. King size beds, waterfall showers, sitting areas, balcony lounge chairs, and more make a suite on board Norwegian Bliss a real treat for cruisers to enjoy.

Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line casinos have been voted “Best Casinos” by Porthole Cruise Magazine readers for the past seven  years. The vast casino on Bliss complements many of the ship’s  atmospheric bars and lounges for endless evenings of cocktails and conversation; don’t miss Sugarcane Mojito Bar, The Mondavi family’s Cellars Wine Bar, and Maltings Whiskey Bar.

The big draw is Jersey Boys, a slightly abbreviated version of the show that took Broadway by storm. This is the story of the legendary Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and their rise to fame from the streets of New Jersey to the hit parade with songs like “Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man,” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” Superb!

Like a tipple with your entertainment? Check out Happy Hour Prohibition — The Musical. A lighthearted tale of bootleggers, toe-tappin’ tunes, and specialty cocktails prohibition-style, this show is a most enjoyable way to spend your pre-dinner hour.

O-slo Nice! (VIDEO)

by Steve Leland August 27, 2019
written by Steve Leland
Oslo is without question the cosmopolitan hub of Norwegian activity and likewise synonymous with Viking heritage, Nordic skiing, cod and salmon. Packed to the brim with museums and cultural attractions, it dazzles with daytime energy and buzzes with a pulsing nightlife. If your cruise ship makes a call on the city consider yourself fortunate, but if you have the time to schedule an extended pre or post cruise interlude you will have hit the jackpot. For the DIY traveler, Visit Norway is an ingenious tool box for planning an engaging itinerary with a treasure trove of information on activities, museums as well as dining alternatives.

Museums of Oslo

Passionate lovers of art will find painted paradise in the National Gallery and Munch Museum and if your appetite is whet by sculpted art, feast your eyes on priceless creations in the Vigeland Museum and view over 200 of the master’s finest sculptures in his namesake park, a tribute to his revered genius.  The grandeur of Norwegian royalty is evidenced by the Royal Palace and the country’s love of the arts is on full display at the National Theater and the geometrical designed National Opera and Ballet complex. An educational primer on Norwegian history can be found in the Historical Museum and the Viking Ship Museum. Across the bay and near the main train station is the nomadic art project of SALT.  This bohemian venue features street food vendors, bars, musical concerts and craft shops and houses one of the world’s largest saunas proffering an opportunity to fully immerse in the warmth of Norway’s personality.  RELATED: A Cruise to Norway Means Magical Memories

The Viking Planet

For a truly interactive experience a visit to the newly opened The Viking Planet is a must. This engrossing, high tech attraction utilizes the latest advances in VR with 4D chairs that virtually transport you back one thousand years aboard a Viking longship. Cinematic storytelling is creatively captured in the immersive Sagascope, 270 degree theater and for futuristic fantasy, human size holograms come to life in the Hologram Theater.  In the Selfie Zone, visitors can project and integrate themselves into a Viking battle or choose other authentic backgrounds for immediate Facebook or Instagram gratification.  One tip to declutter travel logistics is to purchase an Oslo Pass. These passes help to facilitate the experience with free unlimited public transportation, free entry to 30 museums, discounts on sightseeing and leisure activities, as well as special offers in select restaurants.

The Telemark Canal

It’s easy to put Oslo aside for a few days, flee the city and delve into the unspoiled serenity of the Norwegian countryside. The Scandinavian travel experts at 50 Degrees North offer a nostalgic journey aboard a duo of vintage vessel on the historic Telemark Canal.

Fueled and rejuvenated by a hearty breakfast, step aboard the “queen of the canal”, the M/S Victoria for the first segment of the day’s cruise. She has cruised the Telemark since her construction in 1882 and competently treats guests to a morning of majestic cruising through placid lakes, narrow canals and a series of fascinating locks.  Mid-day, guests are transferred to the MS Henrik Ibsen for the afternoon segment of the cruise.
Olso

This historic vessel built in 1907 was completely refurbished in 2010 yet retains the ambiance of the canal’s glory days. Working in tandem, both vessels sail the Telemark region on memorable journeys through one of the world’s most beautiful and unspoiled inland waterways, a slice of Norwegian paradise carved out of rock over 100 years ago. In the late afternoon after weaving through forested fjords, the day’s journey culminates at the historic Dalen Hotel.
Olso

Dalen Hotel | Steve Leland

Originally built as a luxury hotel for the rich and famous in 1894, the property has been meticulously preserved offering an authentic glimpse into its richly deserved legacy. The seclusion, the fairytale architecture, period furnishings and countrified hospitality work together to cast a spell of pure magic. Following dinner in the hotel’s beautifully adorned dining room, choosing to unwind in the privacy and warmth of the new Soria Moria Sauna, ideally positioned directly on the adjacent lake, caps off a perfect day. Before returning to Oslo, spending an additional day in Dalen provides hiking or bicycling opportunities, fishing in the lake or simply relaxing with an engrossing book in the hotel’s manicured gardens.

Norway offers superb cruise itineraries but scheduling extra time for Oslo and off the radar points inland is a wise investment of your holiday time. The entire Telemark experience is one of those best kept secrets you only hear about from locals.  Obviously, it’s far too beautiful to keep to themselves. It’s that good! -Steve Leland

Introducing Disney Wish (VIDEO)

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 26, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When you wish upon a star, you could end up on board the newest ship from Disney Cruise Line! Disney Wish was announced over the weekend at the D23 Expo by Disney Parks Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek and we couldn’t be more exited. The fifth ship from the family cruise line will feature iconic Disney character Rapunzul for the line’s signature stern decorations. The ship is scheduled for delivery in at the end of 2021. Disney Cruise Line also announced plans for a second private island location in the Bahamas with a completion goal between 2022 and 2023.

About Disney Wish

Keeping with a trend we’ve seen across the cruise industry, Disney Wish will be powered by liquid natural gas and will be a little bit bigger than Disney’s current fleet. And as the name suggests, the ship will be all about making guest’s wishes come true!

Disney Wish

The Disney Wish’s stern will feature Rapunzel. Our favorite artsy princess, paintbrush in hand, uses her enchanted hair to suspend herself as she decorates the stern of the ship with the help of her feisty sidekick, Pascal. (Disney)

“Each Disney Cruise Line ship is unique, with a name that embodies the excitement of sailing with Disney and the power of our stories. The new ships will have the experiences our guests love, as well as all-new magic,” Chapek said.

Disney’s renderings leave plenty to the imagination, so we’ll be sure to keep the reader’s updated as soon as more information about the ship becomes available.

Disney’s Lighthouse Point at Eleuthera

Along with the new ship, Disney made another announcement at the D23 Expo that had people talking. A new private island resort on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera is the perfect place for a new cruise ship to stop.

Disney Island

Disney Cruise Line guests can look forward to a signature island experience that celebrates nature and the spirit and culture of The Bahamas at a new Disney port of call, which will be located on the breathtaking island of Eleuthera at a place called Lighthouse Point. (Disney)

Disney has committed to develop less than 20 percent of the property; will employ sustainable building practices, including an open-trestle pier that eliminates the need to dredge a ship channel; establish environmental monitoring programs during construction and operation; and donate more than 190 acres of privately owned land to the Government of The Bahamas.

“With three new ships joining our fleet, we thought this would be an incredible opportunity to add another unique destination to our ports of call. We looked all over The Bahamas and Caribbean for an ideal location that would enable us to create new experiences, while celebrating the culture of this amazing region,” Chapek said.
