Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line Arrives in Nassau

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 24, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of South Florida’s most popular cruise lines celebrated their inaugural sailing to Nassua, Bahamas last week with a lunch event on board Grand Classica for more than 200 local Bahamians in the hospitality industry. The group included travel agents, representatives from hotels and resorts, as well as local government dignitaries. The event followed the cruise line’s recent announcement of new sailings to Nassau, as well as the introduction of a Cruise & Stay Program on the island.

Bahamas Cruise and Stay Program

Travelers sailing to Nassau with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line now have two ways to get away, with either a two-night cruise onboard Grand Classica or through the cruise line’s Cruise & Stay program, which allows travelers to extend their time on the island for up to six nights at several destination hotels and resorts, including the all-inclusive Meliá Nassau Beach Resort at Cable Beach, SLS at Baha Mar and Comfort Suites on Paradise Island. Pricing starts at just $389 per person, and to show its appreciation for advisors that book the Cruise & Stay option for clients; the cruise line is offering a base commission of 15 percent with no non-commissionable fees.

Perks for the new Cruise & Stay package include:

  • a free specialty dinner
  • a free wine tasting onboard
  • five free drinks per stateroom
  • 400 Paradise Rewards points towards a free cruise
  • kids eat and sail free

“We are thankful for everyone who joined us onboard Grand Classica this week for an immersive experience to learn about our unique product,” said Oneil Khosa, CEO of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, who provided each attendee at the event with a free future cruise voucher, so that they could experience the product firsthand with family or friends.

“With our two-night sailings to the Bahamas, departing daily from the Port of Palm Beach, and the introduction of our all-new Cruise & Stay Program offer on Nassau, we are now one of the leading sources of tourism to Nassau,” he continued.  “We’re excited to offer our guests an authentic experience of the island through stays at destination hotels and resorts, and we look forward to helping further stimulate much-needed tourism to the Bahamas, while simultaneously continuing to assist with the rebuilding effort in every possible way.”

Cruises to Grand Bahama Island

The cruise line will continue to sail to Grand Bahama Island and has been active in relief efforts in the region following Hurricane Dorian earlier this fall. It’s a popular weekend getaway for many in South Florida looking for a great vacation that’s close to home.

Last Call: Cunard’s Commander of Cocktails

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 24, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Last Call celebrates the best bars at sea and the people who can’t get enough of them. Today we pay our respects to the captain with a signature concoction inspired by Cunard’s seven most renowned Commodores.

The Place — Commodore Club

Grab A Seat — All Cunard ships

Standout Feature — Keeping with Cunard’s legacy as a traditional, Old World ocean line, the Commodore Club is an elegant venue evocative of the original Queen Mary, which went on its maiden voyage in 1936. The neo-Art Deco design, unobstructed ocean views, and live pianist are best paired with one of seven signature cocktails, each named after a knighted Cunard commodore.

On The Menu — Allow your bartender to steer you in the right direction with cocktails like Punch Romaine à la Carpathia (advocaat, limoncello, cream, sherry, mallow), inspired by Sir Arthur Rostron, or a Yorkshire Pacesetter (Martell Cordon Bleu, The King’s Ginger, molasses, mixed spice), inspired by Sir Edgar Britten.

Sky Princess Getting Rave Reviews

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 23, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The newest member of Princess Cruises’ royal fleet took its first round of guests for a cruise earlier this week and the reviews coming in have been rave. Sky Princess set sail from Athens for a cruise around the Mediterranean and became the first Princess MedallionClass vessel in service for the cruise line. The ship will continue sailing the Mediterranean until December 1st when it debuts in Fort Lauderdale, FL for cruises to the Caribbean. The 145,000 ton ship holds 3,660 passengers and has a number of technological features enhancing the modern cruise experience.

MedallionClass Ships

Princess Cruises changed the cruising game forever a few years ago when they introduced OceanMedallion for guests. The wearable tech allowed for easier access for guests all over the ship. Some of the best perks of the Medallion are:

  • Faster boarding
  • Food and beverage orders to anywhere on the ship
  • Find your friends
  • Keyless room entry
  • Interactive games and information

Following the delivery of the ship from Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, cruise line President Jan Swartz explained the ship’s impact on the industry.

“We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to our long-time shipbuilding partner Fincantieri who delivered Sky Princess to us today,” said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises. “As our new flagship in the fleet, Sky Princess represents the absolute best Princess Cruises has to offer our guests by connecting them with what matters most, unique destinations, loved ones, and new friends, while enjoying all the state-of the-art experiences in comfort and style.”

A Cruiser’s Guide to Fort Lauderdale’s Best Shopping

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 22, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruisers have a lot of choices to make and they start long before embarkation day. Do you want to cruise for 7 or 14 days? Should we get the drink package or pay as we go? Is the balcony stateroom worth the upgrade? Once you get all of that figured out, the really hard part starts…figuring out what to pack. If you head to your closet and see a depressing lack of acceptable cruise wear, never fear. Those cruising from Fort Lauderdale have tons of options to give their wardrobe a much needed boost from major brands to unique boutiques.

Guide to Sawgrass Mills

When it comes to mega-malls, there aren’t many in the entire country that rival Sawgrass Mills. With over 350 retailers, it’s the second largest mall in Florida and the 11th largest in the United States. It’s over 2 million square feet of retail space and there are plenty of great deals to be had! What makes the complex unique is the focus on outlet and value stores offering recognizable brands for far less than retail.

Sawgrass Mills

The Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass Mills | Photo: Sawgrass Mills/Facebook

Located west of downtown Fort Lauderdale at the edge of the famous Everglades, the mall can be overwhelming to first time visitors because of the sheer number of places to explore. We suggest starting in one of the newer sections of the mall, The Colonnade Outlets. This outdoor section has a number of high end outlets like Prada, Burberry, Coach, Kate Spade and plenty more. There are also a few places to eat or grab a drink with outside seating. On a beautiful South Florida day, there’s nothing better than being outside, so this section of the mall is usually a popular spot for window shoppers.

Stay near the mall so you can maximize your shopping time at one of Florida’s premier shopping and dining complexes.

Sawgrass Mills

DoubleTree By Hilton Hotel Sunrise-Sawgrass Mills

From there, head inside the main section and peruse hundreds of stores from small to massive. There’s a Super Target if you need to grab some sunscreen before you sail or the O’Neill outlet if you’re in the market for a new swimsuit. The full list of retailers is impressive and means having plan in place before you go is smart so you don’t get overwhelmed with all the options and places to explore. The mall is just a 15 minute ride to Port Everglades so staying nearby makes embarkation morning a breeze.

Sawgrass Mills

What’s on your pre-cruise shopping list?

More than Just Shopping

While you could spend all day popping from store to store, Sawgrass Mills has a bunch of fun things to do and great places to eat. If your legs need a break from walking, the Regal Cinemas and IMAX theater is welcome relief. If you need a fuel boost, there are plenty of good bites to be had. Some of the most popular restaurants for shoppers at Sawgrass Mills include:

  • Zinburger Wine and Burger Bar
  • Yardhouse
  • Villagio
  • SushiGami
  • Texas de Brazil
  • Seasons 52
  • Mojito Bar Tropical Eats & Latin Beats
  • Matchbox Vintage Pizza Bistro
  • Burgerim

Guide to the Galleria Mall

If you’re staying at one of the many luxury hotels and resorts along Fort Lauderdale Beach, the best place for retail therapy is the Galleria Mall. With more than 100 retailers and some of Fort Lauderdale’s most popular restaurants, Galleria Mall is a popular spot with locals and visitors alike. Stefano Versace Gelato hits the spot after a day spent enjoying the sun, surf and sand of Fort Lauderdale Beach, or treat someone special to dinner at The Capital Grille.

Here’s a great tip, if you go to Guest Services at the mall, they hand out coupon books with tons of awesome savings so don’t miss out!

Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale | Photo: Galleria Mall/Facebook

There’s a lot to do before you cruise, but those looking for some retail therapy on vacation should consider a stay at a hotel in Fort Lauderdale near the best shopping in the area. Both Sawgrass Mills and The Galleria Mall have all the best shopping, dining and entertainment nearby so you can start your vacation long before you set foot on the ship!

Norwegian Says Bye-Bye to Single Use Plastics

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 22, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Sea turtles have a new favorite cruise line thanks to a commitment to ending single use plastics. Norwegian Cruise Line has teamed with JUST Goods, Inc, a sustainable packaging company, to eliminate single use plastic bottles and more on board the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. Single use plastics are one of the biggest polluters of our oceans and poses a threat to sea life all of shapes and sizes. Norwegian isn’t the first cruise line to move towards alternatives to plastic goods and we expect to see more of the same in the future.

The Push to Ban Single-Use Plastics

Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line, explained why protecting natural resources is a major focus for the company.

“We are a leading Company – one that is in the business of creating memorable experiences for our guests,” he said. “It is imperative that we take meaningful steps to preserve our oceans and the destinations we visit. Partnering with JUST is one of my proudest moments as the head of our pioneering brand. This latest effort – the elimination of single-use plastic bottles across our fleet – is just the latest environmentally responsible action we are taking to reduce our footprint and encourage others to protect our natural resources. While we are aware that this is just the beginning of what we and others need to do to be good stewards of our environment, we are committed to our Sail & Sustain initiatives and will continue to innovate for the overall benefit of the planet and its future.”

About JUST Goods

The brainchild of Jaiden Smith, a rapper, actor and the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, JUST takes an innovative approach to sourcing and packaging the world’s most valued resource – water. Using paper instead of plastic, JUST is able to replace bottles that don’t decompose with ones that do.

“It’s critical that businesses take a leading role in efforts to lighten the impact we have on our planet,” said JUST Goods, Inc. CEO Ira Laufer. “We created JUST to do just that – to be a better option in a category that has created a lot of the damage and continues to do so. The JUST team couldn’t be happier to now share this goal with our partner, Norwegian Cruise Line. We’re deeply appreciative of Norwegian’s commitment that’s so similar to ours – the Company is pushing the boundaries of what’s always been done because it knows we all need to do better. We’re thrilled to be taking steps in the right direction alongside NCL.”

Oceania Announces Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center (Video)

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 22, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel
As interest in luxury cruise vacations grow, many small ship luxury lines are making changes to meet high demands from passengers. Oceania Cruises is one of the highest-rated small ship cruise lines and a new spa on board their fleet is adding to the luxury experience. Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, which came about as part of the cruise line’s OceaniaNEXT initiative, takes a holistic approach to health and wellness and goes well beyond what you’ll find at other spas at sea or on land. The spa is set to debut across Oceania’s fleet in December 2019 and January 2020.

OceaniaNext

OceaniaNext is a $100 million initiative to bring Oceania’s fleet into the modern age. Regatta, Insignia, Sirena, and Nautica are all slated to receive significant upgrades including the new Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center.

According to Bob Binder, the President and CEO of Oceania Cruises, upgrading the ships and spa services begins a new era of Oceania cruising.  RELATED: $100 Million in Fleet Upgrades for Oceania Cruises “OceaniaNEXT will be the most extensive and comprehensive suite of product and guest service enhancements that we have ever undertaken,” he said. “Our Regatta-Class ships are like second homes to our loyal guests and travel partners. They don’t build ships like these anymore, which is why this re-inspiration project is such an important milestone in our company’s 15-year history. We are maintaining the intimate surroundings and personal attention that our guests love, while at the same time setting a new standard of style and elegance for small ship cruising. We have opened a new chapter, innovating in every way as we look to the future and the way our guests want to travel. We can’t wait for our ‘new’ ships to launch.”

Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center

In a press release, the luxury cruise company outlined what makes their new spa so unique from the rest: A holistic approach to well-being is at the very heart of our new Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center. The dynamic suite of programs and services extends well beyond the spa to support all dimensions of wellness and help you attain balance. Enriching presentations on board and enlightening adventures ashore stimulate the intellect. Healthy menu choices and personal training consultations boost physical fitness. Revitalizing massages or oxygen facials instill a radiant glow that soothes the soul. Taken as a whole, the Aquamar experience translates to the best possible quality of life during your voyage with Oceania Cruises and beyond. Sounds pretty nice to us!

Virgin Trains Eyes New Station at PortMiami

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 18, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When Virgin Trains USA, formerly Brightline, opened up shop in South Florida, it changed the way people traveled within the state. Home to millions of people and growing, the train improved travel times and added convenience for those traveling between Miami and West Palm Beach, with service to Orlando already in the works. Now the company has its sights set on a new train station at PortMiami to make getting to your ship a whole lot easier.

Should the county of Miami-Dade approve the new station at PortMiami, it would make getting to port a whole lot easier for cruisers sailing from Miami but traveling from elsewhere across the state, country or even the world. South Florida has train options already, mainly the Tri-Rail, but with fewer stops and a faster speed, Virgin Trains are the future of rail travel in the state.

The man behind the trains, Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson

The cost of the project would be well into the multi-millions, but with Virgin paying rent and fees. Virgin, the company behind the train service, has made a significant investment in South Florida over the past few years. The company started a luxury cruise line operating from PortMiami starting in 2020, as well as a Virgin Hotel in Miami coming in 2023.

Last week we sent out what was easily the best deal in cruising. A week on board the spectacular MSC Meraviglia in a balcony stateroom for just over $300 per person. Apparently MSC Cruises isn’t done basically giving away weeklong cruises for the cost of one night in a Miami Beach hotel room. Today the deal involves another one of MSC Cruises’ newest ships, MSC Seaside. Click the map below and get the deal!

7 Day Western Caribbean onboard MSC Seaside

Cruise from lovely Miami and head to Ocho Rios, Cayman Islands, Cozumel and Ocean Cay all on board the MSC Seaside. If you’ve been pinching pennies saving up for a vacation, now is the best time to book. Inside staterooms start at just $294 per person for the whole week and if you want to upgrade, ocean view and balcony rooms are only $339. Live the suite life for as little as $624 with the option for a bunch of awesome perks like spa access, unlimited drinks, access to a private sundeck.

If you’ve been waiting for a great last minute cruise deal, this is the one you need to jump on. It’s a new ship, awesome ports and the option to really live it up in a suite for a fraction of what you should be paying.

Blue World Voyages: The Healthy Choice in Cruising … AND Living!

by Judi Cuervo October 17, 2019
written by Judi Cuervo

The Monthly Mantra

Move it! … Move it! … Move it!

Blue World Voyages is betting that it can get my fat butt out of a deck chair and transform my cruise experience into an active and healthy one with an exclusive focus on sports, fitness, and wellness.

And from what I learned from the line’s founders, health and fitness entrepreneur Gene Meehan and former Residensea CEO Fredy Dellis, they just might succeed.

Blue World Voyages sets sail in Spring 2021 with the first of three cruise ships designed to appeal to fitness and health fanatics who until now have shunned cruising, believing that it’s all about Jell-O shots, massive buffets, formal dress, and being herded around to tourist traps aboard overly air-conditioned motor coaches. BWV is attracting these first-timers through strategic partnerships with health-focused companies like Outside Integrated Media, Yoga Journal, Well + Good and more.

RELATED: Twenty Years of Onboard Innovations

Veteran cruisers can join the party if we’re into the health and wellness thing. | Photo: Blue World Voyages

Fortunately, veteran cruisers like us can join the party too if we’re into the health and wellness thing because the BWV’s ultimate goal is to create an environment filled with like-minded people (and they probably don’t want all first-timers, because having to explain over and over and over what a tender is and how to put on a life jacket would drive anyone mad). Sailings will be open to adults and active kids 16 and older (which I interpret to mean kids who will happily play something besides video games).

I’m always a little nervous when I suspect someone’s trying to transform my hard-earned vacation into something wholesome and healthy — I envision tofu and broccoli for dinner each night and maybe a white wine spritzer — but as Gene and Fredy revealed their plans, I realized that this just might be the innovative line active cruisers have been waiting for: five-star casual luxury for decidedly active folks.

Imagine:

  • A full deck dedicated to sports, exercise, and wellness with cool complimentary stuff like a golf and soccer simulator, batting cages, training center, yoga, spinning, and a TRX studio.
  • A second deck focused on rejuvenation, including the largest guest spa afloat with a relaxing therapy tub, indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, and solarium.

Blue Water Voyages outdoor seawater pool

A seawater pool attached to the side of the ship| Photo: Blue World Voyages

  • Three swimming pools including, when docked, a seawater pool that’s created by affixing an open platform to the side of the ship — it even has space for deck chairs — and the bottom of the structure is netted, which means Jaws and jellyfish won’t interrupt your laps. Water toys like wave runners and kayaks will also be available … at no charge.

All that activity will sure work up an appetite, so Blue World Voyages plans to offer a selection of healthy and delicious dining options, from a farm-to-table main dining room to Asian and Italian specialty restaurants, an extensive food-and-wine-pairing lounge, and a demonstration kitchen. The focus at all venues will be rave-worthy dishes — NOT diet food!

Blue World Voyages: Shrouded in Intrigue

At this point, the ships themselves are shrouded in mystery although it appears that two of the three vessels have been confirmed and all three are currently sailing with an unnamed cruise line (or cruise lines). Capacity will be about 500 guests and each ship will undergo an extensive refit before it takes to the seas for Blue World Voyages, transporting guests to off-the-beaten- track ports the world over for — you guessed it — active shore excursions that will include things like cycling, hiking, golfing, water sports, and more.

Blue World Voyages owners residence for living at sea

A two-bedroom owners’ residence | Photo: Blue World Voyages

If all of this floats your boat, consider cruising with Blue World Voyages…or maybe moving in! Those who were paying attention might have noticed that BWV co-founder Fredy Dellis had served as CEO of Residensea, the original live-aboard cruise ship. Fredy and Gene have decided to take the owner’s concept to BWV with 40 spectacular one-and two-bedroom balconied residences available for purchase on each ship. While the hefty price tag (apartments start at $2,350,000 with annual maintenance approximately of $200,000) might be a deterrent to all but the crazy wealthy, lottery winners, and embezzlers, owners may rent out the digs to generate income. And don’t forget that apartments include all include furniture, linens, daily cleaning, free internet, food and beverage, most shore excursions, and, of course, all the sports and fitness activities aboard.

With the way my health club membership fee keeps rising, I just might have to look into it.

Perfect Day at Lelepa, Vanuatu Coming in 2022

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 15, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When Royal Caribbean revamped their private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, earlier this year, it followed a trend seen across the cruise industry. More and more cruise lines have started their own private island resorts in the Caribbean and it’s rare these days that a cruise itinerary doesn’t have at least one day at a private island resort owned and operated by cruising’s biggest names. Royal Caribbean, clearly pleased with the positive feedback from guests at CocoCay this year, have announced a second private island resort, but this time on the other side of the world.

Perfect Day at Lelepa, Vanuatu

Perfect Day at Lelepa, Vanuatu was just announced by Vanuatu Prime Minister Charlot Salwai and Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley and it has sustainability at the forefront.

Vanuatu is a chain of 80 or so islands in the South Pacific Ocean. The island chain grew in popularity in 2004 when it was the featured location of the hit TV show Survivor. Renowned for its pristine beaches and gorgeous flora and fauna, Vanuatu is what people think about when they picture their dream tropical vacation.

RELATED: Perfect Day at CocoCay: Port Review

“We believe our destinations should be sustainably designed,” Bayley said. “That idea goes beyond simply protecting the ecological features of Lelepa and includes showing respect for the people and traditions that make this a special place.”

“Vanuatu is a true paradise for both our people and the visitors we welcome to our shores each year. Today marks a major step forward in our island nation’s close relationship with Royal Caribbean and one that will support sustainable growth for future generations,” the Prime Minister said. “The Ni-Vanuatu people look forward to welcoming Royal Caribbean guests from around the world to enjoy extraordinary adventures and relaxation during their Perfect Day at Lelepa.”

According to Bayley, the new private island will not have the same look or feel of Perfect Day at CocoCay in order to appeal to visitors from all over the world. The project is expected to be completed in 2022.

Spend a Spooktacular Halloween in New Orleans Before You Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 15, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

What’s the scariest city in America? Some might say Salem, Massachusetts or Sleepy Hollow, New York thanks to their place in history and pop culture, but we’re here to say the best place to work up a fright this Halloween is without a doubt New Orleans. This city by the sea has a long history of frights and mystery which is perfect for your pre-cruise Halloween fun! From spooky parades to the best costume shops and plenty of haunted houses and cemeteries, New Orleans is the only place to cruise from in October! Kids and adults alike will enjoy exploring the city and who knows, maybe you’ll see a ghost!

New Orleans

New Orleans is known for fantastic Halloween spirit

Haunted French Quarter Tours

While most think of Mardi Gras when New Orleans comes to mind, Halloween is just as fun when it comes to city-wide celebrations of ghosts, ghouls, goblins and everything else that makes you scream. The best place to start your New Orleans Halloween adventure is in the historic French Quarter where the streets turn into a parade of costumes and candy. Make sure you stop into one of the many costume shops to pick out some fun and scary outfits for the whole family!

Those who feel brave should take one of the city’s haunted tours where guests immerse themselves in a haunted history of voodoo, hoodoo and the city’s most active places for paranormal activity. With hundreds of years of history to explore, you might come across a spirit or two yourself. Once the sun goes down, these tours bring people through haunted homes, cemeteries and places where some of the most brutal crimes throughout the city’s history took place.

New Orleans

Krewe of Boo Parade

The Saturday before Halloween is when things really get spooky thanks to the Krewe of Boo parade, an annual tradition and the official Halloween parade for the city. The parade is highlighted by floats made of papier-mâché of all your favorite monsters; vampires, Frankenstein, werewolves, mummies and a whole lot more.

The parade starts on Elysian Fields in the Marigny and makes its way through the French Quarter, past famous Jackson Square, and is free to all who want to watch. Follow along the parade route and catch candy, CheeWees, pralinettes, light-up medallion beads, voodoo doll pins and magnets, doubloons, and children’s toys thrown from the floats.

America’s Most Haunted City

Few places in America boast the history and culture of New Orleans. With that history comes macabre tales of the past and vengeful spirits taking their revenge from beyond the grave.

New Orleans

Are you brave enough to tour New Orleans’ most haunted cemeteries?

New Orleans has a number of haunted places to explore, some of the most popular include:

  • LaLaurie Mansion
  • Sultan’s Palace
  • St. Louis Cemetery #1
  • Old Absinthe House
  • Muriel’s Séance Lounge
  • Hotel Monteleone

When you’re booking a cruise vacation this fall, remember that Port NOLA is like two vacations in one. Come a day or two before your cruise, especially during October, to experience the best this iconic American city has to offer. Halloween is second only to Mardi Gras when it comes to the biggest citywide parties and events. From haunted tours to Halloween parades, there’s something fun for all in New Orleans. If you haven’t booked your cruise from Port NOLA yet, what are you waiting for?

Shore Excursions: Forts in Ports

Today, the battlements provide beautiful backdrops to our snapshots, and their towers reach reassuringly into clear skies – but as in centuries past, they allow us to keep watch as each new ship enters the harbor from ports unknown.

Fort Jefferson

Let’s Talk Turkey

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 14, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

I love to cook up spirited itineraries for my nomadic travels and Turkey provides delectable key ingredients: ancient history, intriguing culture, and fabulous food. Together, they create the perfect recipe for an engaging Middle Eastern adventure. Over the course of centuries, the capital of Istanbul (once Constantinople) has earned its regional and historical influence. While this city of cities could never be considered a new cruise port, fresh initiatives have contributed to a reemergence of Istanbul as a sought-after destination.

Getting to Turkey

Arriving by cruise ship is always a bonus, but extra days visiting a trio of land-based destinations provide a deeper experience of this fascinating country, perfect for pre- or post-cruise alternatives. My long-held hopes for a visit were conveniently facilitated by a Turkish Airlines non-stop flight from Miami; waking up on arrival in Istanbul was a virtual and literal eye opener, thanks to a restful night’s sleep on the airline’s business-class, flat-bed seat.

With things to see, food to eat, and culture to experience, I hit the ground running and turned to Tura Tourism, one of the largest inbound tour operators serving individuals as well as a majority of cruise guests from visiting ships. What impressed me the most was the guest-centric attitude of the personnel. From the driver to the smiling personality of the private guide, every moment provides the feeling of warm hospitality and expert knowledge. As a general rule, securing this type of elevated service is only available by private arrangement; however, Tura Tourism’s association with many cruise lines provides visitors with top-quality tour alternatives in a secure environment.

The Intrigue of Istanbul

The single most iconic presence in Istanbul is undoubtedly the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque. Constructed in the early 1600s, the interior walls are adorned with 20,000 hand painted Isnik tiles while the exterior is capped off by five main domes, eight secondary domes and six minarets. Bathed in blue lights at night, the mosque creates an absolutely stunning skyline spectacle.

The nearby Hagia Sophia with its Byzantine architecture supporting its massive dome also demands attention. Originally constructed in 537 C.E. as an Eastern Orthodox church, later transformed to a Roman Catholic basilica, and then an Ottoman mosque, it was the world’s largest cathedral for close to one thousand years. Today, it is officially a museum visited by over 3 million people per year.

My addiction to anything cruise-related is satisfied by a 3-hour private cruise up the Bosphorus Strait. This essential waterway is lined with Ottoman-style homes that serve as lifestyle retreats for the city’s affluent sector.

No visit to Istanbul would be complete without experiencing the entertaining drama of the vendors of the famed Grand Bazaar, where bargaining is not only accepted but expected. A heated session in one of the nearby hammams, or Turkish bath houses, is another journey into authenticity — as is a venture through the Topkapı Palace complex, the 15th-century headquarters of the Ottoman Empire.

World-class dining is available throughout the city, but for me the local engagement of eating meze selections is the way to go. These mini-meals consist of an assortment of hot and cold dishes brought out on a tray for diners to choose from. If seafood is your cup of tea, nothing beats the bounty of the Bosporus, with restaurants across the city serving up freshly caught fish.

Kusadasi and Ephesus

Well-preserved ruins of biblical proportions can be reached in a brief pilgrimage to Ephesus, a short drive from the coastal resort city of Kusadasi. Regardless of religious persuasion, this is an intriguing site, offering insights into the ancient conversion of the Roman Empire and the beginnings of Christianity. All eyes gravitate to the iconic ruins of the Library of Celsus as you creep along the marble and cobblestone streets, which terminate near the Ephesus Theatre, an ancient amphitheater capable of….

Perks of Staying at Fort Lauderdale Hotels Not Close to Port

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 10, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Are you an anxious traveler? You know, the kind that’s packed a week in advance, shows up to the airport three hours too early and generally stresses about every little detail when it comes to getting from one place to another?

Those people tend to think they have to stay as close to the port as possible the night before a cruise, but there are great hotels in Fort Lauderdale which make it easy to cruise thanks to shuttle to port ride services that every traveler will appreciate. Whether you’re staying in the middle of the action at a place like the Hampton Inn Ft. Lauderdale/Downtown Las Olas or playing in the sand at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, you’re just a quick shuttle ride away from the start of your vacation!

Fort Lauderdale is a beautiful city by the sea with lots to do and experience, but if you’re choosing your hotel strictly based on how close it is to port, you could be missing out on all the cool activities, great food and fun culture found in the Venice of America.

Fort Lauderdale

The intracoastal waterway gives Fort Lauderdale it’s nickname

Do yourself a favor, book the hotel that makes your vacation fun AND convenient!

Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotels

It’s common for people when they cruise from Fort Lauderdale to book a hotel as close to port as possible. While this can make the ride to port a tiny bit shorter, there are plenty of Fort Lauderdale hotels on the beach that aren’t far from port and much closer to all the great sights, sounds and tastes of the area. Those who choose to book a luxury beachside hotel like the Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach are staying in the heart of Fort Lauderdale’s famous stretch of beachfront bars, restaurants and attractions.

Looking to dine on fresh seafood? Terra Mare on Fort Lauderdale Beach offers a wide variety of local fish and crustaceans with stunning views of the beach from the oceanfront patio. It’s the perfect way to spend the evening after a day on the beach or by the pool before heading to the ship the next morning. The stretch of beach to the North and South of the restaurant is one of the most popular in all of Fort Lauderdale so make sure you don’t skip out on people watching!

Transportation Means Less Stress

The best part about spending time in the Sunshine State is the laid-back atmosphere. It’s easy to slip into vacation mode long before you set foot on your ship thanks to hotels on Fort Lauderdale Beach which offer convenient stay and go packages designed with cruisers in mind. Rather than spend your pre-cruise day worrying about making it to your ship safely and on time, a shuttle service from a hotel like Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach makes your life easy.

Plenty of major cruise lines sail from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale including:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Costa Cruise Line
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Holland America Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean International

Some may turn to ride-sharing apps or a private transportation company when it comes to getting to the ship, but not everyone feels comfortable spending so much on a ride, particularly with a complete stranger. If you drove your own car into town, park and stay packages keep your vehicle safe and sound while you soak up the sun on the ship’s lido deck. Not only do these services help reduce the stress of travel, but they can save you a few bucks on transportation costs as well. That’s more time, energy and funds you get to spend on doing the things that you love to do on vacation!

Green Seas: Norway’s Wave of Environmental Innovation

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 10, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Norway is often thought of as a land of Fjords, pickled herring, and minimalist design, but thanks to overwhelming support from the Norwegian government, you can add maritime clean technology to that list. Be it small design firms creating lightweight hulls for electric ships or engineers conceiving the world’s most advanced charging technology, the Nordic Kingdom is putting its sovereign wealth fund (ironically built up from oil profits) to good use by revolutionizing sustainable nautical travel.

Unifying it all is NCE Maritime CleanTech

Established in 2011, the cluster organization is a dynamic cooperation between the entire maritime value chain: from ship design to shipyards, equipment suppliers, and ship owners. Among the cluster participants are international leaders in their fields, such as the first suppliers to introduce LNG (liquefied natural gas) and other energy carriers aboard vessels. These sustainable solutions have rippled into the cruise industry with the launch of AIDAnova in 2018 — the first cruise ship in the world that can operate completely using LNG.

Locally, Norway is setting the example for other ship owning nations. Launched in 2015, MS Ampere was the world’s first fully electrical ferry. It was conceived by three NCE Maritime CleanTech participants: Siemens, Norled ferry operations, and Fjellstrand shipyard. Four years have passed and Norway is on track to turn much of its ferry fleet electric; the first batch of over 60 new ferries is in production.

The country has ruled that by 2026, access to its two fjord areas classified as World Heritage Sites will be restricted to zero-emission vessels. Four years later, Norway will begin restricting other fjords and Norwegian waters to ships with low- or zero-emission technology.

For more information on NCE Maritime CleanTech and their participants, visit maritimecleantech.no.

Life on the Edge

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 9, 2019
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

“There is no Terminal 25,” my taxi driver huffed as we neared Port Everglades. “Trust me, I’ve been driving here for 15 years. It’s not there.”

We arrived shortly at, you guessed it, T25. In the cabbie’s defense, the structure is Celebrity Cruises’ newest terminal, a spacious, bright, state-of-the-art facility designed for “frictionless boarding” (to use Celebrity-speak), whose goal is to move guests “from the car to the bar” in less than 10 minutes.

But the real star of the show that day was the impressive new ship with the cantilevered orange contraption draped over the starboard side, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge. Celebrity had been touting this new entrant — the first in its new Edge class of ships — for a year before the December 2018 christening, claiming that it would be the most high-tech cruise ship at sea. That’s the sort of hyperbole that makes a travel writer roll his eyes. But after three days on this magnificent vessel, I came away convinced. Mostly.

Technology Enhances Celebrity Edge

The technology begins well before departure for those who download the ship’s smartphone app, which enables advance check-in, provides a boarding pass, and uploads a guest’s selfie for facial recognition by security (and faster boarding). Once aboard, passengers can use it to access deck plans, see their own position via geo-location technology, text fellow passengers, add activities to a calendar, and book dining and spa times. It even allows a smartphone to serve as a room key and adjust the lights and temperature in the cabins, although you can still accomplish those tasks manually, if you prefer. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity’s parent, plans to roll out the technology to its entire fleet this year.

My wife, Kathy, accompanied me on this trip. As we searched out our stateroom, we were both impressed by the understated interior decoration of the public areas. I still recall when brass accents, smoked glass, and gaudy light fixtures were commonplace on cruise ships, so I was relieved to see that the color scheme throughout drew from a sophisticated palette: mostly muted shades of gray, with occasional splashes of wine red. “Most ships make you feel like you’re in Las Vegas,” said Liam, a fellow passenger who has sailed on dozens of cruises. “This feels like you’re in an upscale resort.”

\We were delighted by what we found in our 243-square-foot Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda. The king-size bed was a welcome surprise, and the wealth of storage space was more than we needed. The “veranda” of the 918 Infinite Veranda cabins is actually part of the room’s interior that can be walled off with bi-fold glass doors and opened to the elements by lowering a large outer window to about waist height. Sounds clever, but as Kathy pointed out, the stateroom can’t be curtained off while someone is using the veranda, a problematic design flaw when one guest is an early riser who likes coffee on the veranda while the other guest sleeps in.

The Magic Carpet

The most distinctive feature on Celebrity Edge, though, is not found in any suite or stateroom, but clinging to the side of the massive vessel. Roughly the size of a tennis court, the Magic Carpet operates somewhat like an exterior elevator, able to stop on — and become part of — four decks. On Deck 16, it transforms into a specialty restaurant. On Deck 14, it turns into an open-air lounge for up to 100 guests, with a bar and live music. On Deck 5, it adds al fresco seating to the ship’s specialty seafood restaurant. And on Deck 2, it serves as an elegant tender-loading platform.

That first night, Kathy and I ate dinner at the ship’s specialty CGI restaurant (at least, that’s how I came to think of it): Le Petit Chef and Friends, a theatrical 3D-animation-cum-meal performance during which thumb-size cartoon chefs are projected onto your plate with mind-blowing realism and “prepare” your dish. (There’s a fixed menu of salad, steak frites, truffled cheese ravioli, and green tea matcha cake, though Kathy was able to request a vegetarian entrée).

RELATED: Cruise Ship Review: Celebrity Edge

Most guests would be satisfied with just the four complimentary main restaurants: New American at Cosmopolitan, French at Normandie, Mediterranean at Cypress, and Italian at Tuscan). But to miss the specialty venues, including Le Petit Chef, would be a sin; many guests I spoke with said the upcharge (sometimes up to $65 per person) is worth the memorable meals. Savor exquisitely marbled beef at Fine Cut, barbecue at the outdoor Rooftop Garden Grill, a seafood raw bar at Raw on 5, and “experiential dining” at Eden. More on Eden in a bit.

All-day casual dining at the complimentary grab-and-go Oceanview Café is like eating at the best New York deli imaginable, with Asian stir-fry, gourmet sandwiches, salad bar, and what may be the tastiest pizza at sea. Also complimentary are several smaller cafés and an outdoor burger stand. Two semi-private restaurants — Blu (spa cuisine) and Luminae (Continental) — are open for Aqua Class and suite guests, respectively. The spa, operated by OneSpaWorld, has 23 treatment rooms and an old-fashioned full-service barbershop for men. Suite guests can get away from it all in The Retreat, an exclusive relaxation area with pool, bar, sundeck, and lounge. The Resort Deck, with its main pool, glassed-in Solarium pool, jogging track, and Pool Bar, is where we spent much of our time. The Resort Deck’s Rooftop Garden is kooky fun, with its horticultural sculptures, massive outdoor TV, and giant Jenga games.

I’ve saved the best — or do I mean the weirdest? — for last. Eden is a three-level space with expansive aft views. It’s one part craft-cocktail bar, one part experimental restaurant (think ruby-red carabinero shrimp with aloe and “oceanic broth”), and one part performance space in which futuristically dressed actors, called Edenists, swing on trapezes, juggle, gaze into the infinite void, and — strangest of all — engage you in conversation.

All of which begs the question: Who is this ship for, anyway? There are few typical diversions like bingo, trivia contests, napkin folding, etc., and a dearth of entertainment for families and kids. The lack of traditional shipboard activities left some guests I spoke with feeling like there wasn’t enough to do.

Celebrity Edge Caters to the Next Generation

Celebrity Edge, with its apps, geo-location technology, artisanal cocktails, and lack of traditional activities, strikes me as a ship aimed at millennials. Nothing wrong with that; it’s simply different from Celebrity’s typical demographic.

Our short cruise to nowhere coming to a close, I asked Kathy for her overall reaction. She thought about the great meals we’d had, the technology-forward amenities, the musical performance in the ship’s state-of-the-art theater, the bars and cocktail lounges, and our beautiful stateroom, and she uttered the ultimate Kathy compliment: “Very nice,” she said. But if you knew Kathy, you’d know that was a 5-star review.

Celebrity Edge sails in the Caribbean in the fall and winter, and in the Mediterranean in the spring and summer. For more information, go to www.celebritycruises.com.

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Did you know that there are around 49 million bubbles in a single bottle of champagne? Virgin Voyages wants their sailors to experience each and every one with their new Shake for Champagne service. With just a shake of their smartphone, Virgin sailors can have Möet Chandon Impérial delivered anywhere on board Scarlet Lady when she debuts in early 2020.

Save Water, Drink Champagne App

“There’s nothing more luxurious than having champagne at your beck and call or even a shake. We are committed to creating the world’s most irresistible travel brand, so we thought long and hard about how to help our Sailors effortlessly get a sip of bubbly during their voyage, and presto Shake for Champagne was conjured up!” said Nathan Rosenberg, CMO for Virgin Voyages.

Aptly named “Save Water, Drink Champagne”, the new campaign centers around a secret button that appears on the Virgin Voyages app when the device is given a quick shake by the user while the app is up and running.  Simply press the button that appears and in a matter of moments, you’ll be sipping bubbly watching the waves roll by without a care in the world. Served in an iconic red bucket, the brand’s signature color, guests receive a bottle of Möet Chandon Impérial and two glasses.

A Lifetime of Painting Cruise Ships

by Judi Cuervo October 7, 2019
written by Judi Cuervo

The Monthly Mantra

Artist on Board … Artist on Board … Artist on Board …

“Can we go to Cucina for dinner?”

That was Bermudian maritime artist Stephen Card’s immediate reaction to me telling him I’d be visiting the island aboard Carnival Sunrise’s 4-day sailing from New York. Not “Oh, it’ll be so nice to see you!” Not “It’s been way too long!” Not even “I’m really looking forward to it.”

Unfortunately for Stephen, the ship would only be in Bermuda from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. so the dinner-only Cucina del Capitano, Sunrise’s Italian restaurant, would be shuttered for my entire call at the island. Ha. Ha. Ha.

***

I can’t believe I’ve known Stephen Card for 26 years.

It seems like yesterday that he joined our table at the Ocean Bar aboard Holland America’s Statendam in 1993 claiming to be a Bermudian and a maritime artist. I believed neither. He had no discernable accent and, seriously, he didn’t look like an artist — no piercings, tattoos, man-bun, or tattered Ramones t-shirt. For heaven’s sake, he was wearing a blazer with a little embroidered emblem on it like a Catholic grade-school uniform.

RELATED: Cruise Artiste – Maritime painter Stephen Card has got the ticket to the good life.

As it turned out, Stephen wasn’t yanking my chain and, ever since, I’m always on the lookout for Stephen Card paintings whenever I sail the ships of Holland America, Cunard, Carnival, Saga, and Costa.

Stephen Card in front of his portrait of Carnival Triumph entering Messina, which it never really did but we won't tell.

Stephen Card with his painting in Cucina del Capitano | Photo: Judi Cuervo

I recognize them immediately by the puffy cumulus clouds that always seem to hover above whatever magnificent ship is featured on the canvas.

A self-taught artist, Stephen was destined to be at sea and, without fate intervening, he just might have found himself at the helm of one of the ships he loves. In fact, his early years are sprinkled not with artistic achievement but with stints that range from deck hand to harbor master, delivery master of ocean-going tugs, and even a position aboard the private luxury motor yacht of entertainment mogul Robert Stigwood. In the early 1980s, however, a chance encounter with Nico van der Vorm, then Chairman of Holland America Line, led to a three-painting commission for van der Vorm’s office, and convinced Stephen to trade in his dress whites for a set of paintbrushes. It was a decision that triggered commissions that continue to this day and recognition as a premier cruise ship artist.

***

Aboard Carnival Sunrise, Stephen and I stroll around until we come upon Cucina del Capitano on deck 10. We enter to find no tables set with straw-covered bottles of chianti, menus, or baskets of warm parmagiano-topped bread but, on the far wall, I spot a Stephen Card painting in its golden frame. In this painting — big surprise — cumulus clouds hover above Carnival Triumph (which is now Carnival Sunrise) and the ship sits beside an ornate lighthouse. “For Cucina, Carnival wanted a connection to Italy so I set the ship in Messina, alongside the lighthouse topped by the golden Madonnina,” says Stephen, explaining that the quote that appears at the base of the lighthouse — Vos et ipsam civitatem benedicimus — is a blessing contained in a letter from the Virgin Mary to the citizens of the city. “The only problem,” admits Stephen, “Is that Triumph never sailed to Messina.”

Well, I won’t tell if you don’t….

To date, Stephen has produced 21 paintings for Carnival and, next on the agenda, is a painting of Carnival Mardi Gras, the line’s first ship, that will be displayed aboard the new Carnival Mardi Gras which sets sail next year. Look for it — where else — at the Cucina del Capitano restaurant on board.

The Best Cruise Ship Artist

Stephen Card's Delft tile of a Dutch ship

Fans and collectors of maritime art will want to pick up Stephen’s books Cunarder, Holland America Line: The Spotless Fleet, and his most recent volume, Steam and Canvas, a collection of over 100 maritime paintings — or they’ll want to check out his line of Delft tiles, Famous Dutch Liners, all available through [email protected]. If you happen to be in Bermuda early next month, you can catch Stephen’s November 8th one-man show at Gallery 117, an exhibition that includes about 20 paintings — maritime subjects along with a few surprises — like aviation works and still life.

Aviation and still life?? Suddenly my world tilts like it did when the Bee Gees went disco, but I recover and ask Stephen what he’s working on now.

“I’ve just finished a painting of Swedish America Line’s Kungsholm in Fort St. Catherine, Bermuda,” he says. “Her Easter cruise, 1937.”

And, just like that … the world rights itself.

Judi Cuervo and Stephen Card are NOT getting engaged.

Not an engagement photo. | Photo: Judi Cuervo

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Stephen and I are NOT engaged. A rumor like that starts when a bartender snaps a photo that seems to focus on a subject’s ring finger and the shot is innocently posted on Facebook. So, save your congratulations, gravy boats, and monogrammed bath towels for an actual celebration of love. I’m still pretty ticked about dinner at Cucina being the first thing Stephen thought about when I said I was coming down.
